GOD'S COVENANTS WITH MANKIND

A description of the 7 major covenants God gave to the human race.

INTRODUCTION

As we look at the sacrifice and seal of what Jesus has done for us - for you and for me.

This understanding is so important as it clarifies how we are to live our life for Him today.

THE NEW COVENANT (continued)

3. THE SACRIFICE (by God the Son in place of man's body)

The ultimate sacrifice. God sacrificed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. A single sacrifice made for all mankind, now being the only sacrifice acceptable to God.

a. ONCE AND FOR ALL

Until now, sacrifices had to be made on an ongoing, retrospective basis on the Altar of firstly, the Tabernacle, then the Temple.

But Jesus changed the system by becoming the sacrifice for all mankind's future sins.

Hebrews 9:11-14, 10:9-10

b. THE SOLE SACRIFICE OF THE NEW COVENANT IS JESUS CHRIST

The Son of God.

Hebrews 7:24-8, 9:11-28, 10:9-22, 10:9-22

All other sacrifices are an abomination to the Lord.

Isaiah 66:1-4

The blood of Jesus, the Christ, alone, is the only sacrifice acceptable to God as an atonement (forgiveness) for sins.

Romans 5:9, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14, 1 John 1:7, Revelation 1:5, 5:9, 7:14

4. THE SEAL (ACTUAL)(of God the Holy Spirit to replenish man's spirit)

Confirmed in Scripture.

Ephesians 4:30, 2 Corinthians 1:21-2

The Holy Spirit of God was promised by the Father through Jesus before His death.

John 14:26

Again after the resurrection of Jesus.

Acts 1:4-5

Given as a deposit, guaranteeing our ultimate inheritance of eternal life with God.

Ephesians 1:13-14

The Holy Spirit began to poured out in Acts 2 and continues right now and will continue until Jesus returns. We are told to be filled with the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18

A sign of the infilling of the Holy Spirit is to speak in other tongues, to pray and praise God in a new language given to us by Him.

Mark 16:17, Acts 2:4, 19:6

This is not the gift of tongues of 1 Corinthians 12:10, which is one of the 9 gifts of the Spirit and is to be accompanied by interpretation. Rather, it is a new 'tongue' given to every Spirit based believer for their own edification.

1 Corinthians 14:2-4, 18-19

The baptism (infilling) of the Holy spirit empowers us to live out the promises of the New Covenant.

I tried in my own strength and found it impossible!

Colossians 3:9-10

This is signified through water baptism as we are crucified and buried with Christ.

Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 2:20

And outworked by the Holy Spirit in our new resurrection life.

Romans 6:5-13

5. THE SEAL (SPIRITUAL)

The seal of the Holy Spirit imparts:

1. SECURITY: The stone at the mouth of the lions den was sealed with the king's signet ring so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed.

Daniel 6:16-17

Likewise the stone on Jesus tomb!

Matthew 27:66

2. OWNERSHIP:
The blood REDEEMS us to God.
The water SEPARATES us to God.
The Spirit POSSESSES us for God.

1 John 5:7-9

God claimed His Son when the Holy Spirit came upon Him.

Matthew 3:16-17

The Christian is bought with a price to become the temple of the Holy Spirit.

John 14:15-23, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

3. AUTHORITY: Under the Old Covenant both Joseph and Mordecai had authority through using the king's seal, a type of what is now available for us.

Genesis 41:41-2, Esther 8:7-8

Posession of 'the king's' seal gives us authority to act in His name!

20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. (1 Corinthians 4:20)

John 20:21-3, Acts 1:8, 2:38, 5:12, 9:40

4. LIKENESS: His own image is imparted to the one who is sealed, on the proviso that there is a complete yielding to the Spirit. A seal is malleable. So must we be! The seal makes an identical impression to the sender!

5. OBLIGATION: All parties to a covenant are responsible for fulfilling their contractual obligations. The Christians obligation is to receive the Holy Spirit AND to walk in Him, AND NOT to grieve Him!

All too often, we overlook our obligations!

Romans 8:1-14, Galatians 5:16-26, Ephesians 4:30-2, Colossians 1:9-11, 2:6

6. UNBROKEN!

The New Covenant will not be broken. It is the final covenant offered to mankind. We must choose to accept or reject it.

7. SOME SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

All of history since AD30.

And that still to come until Jesus returns!

NEXT WEEK THE POWER OF THE BLOOD

We will take a look at what the sacrifice, the blood of Jesus , has done for us.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

We are so blessed to live under the New Covenant.

However, we need to understand and live out its obligations as well as its blessings!

In what languages were the Dead Sea scrolls written ?

The majority of the scrolls were written in the Hebrew Language (approximately 90-95%) with Assyrian Block script. From this majority there are a few cases in which the scribes used Paleo-Hebrew. In addition to the texts found in Hebrew there were also some texts written in Aramaic and Greek.

So until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD!

His servant and yours
