THE PROPHETIC FEASTS OF THE LORD - Series 1 - THE SPRING FEASTS

Part 3 of 7
THE PATTERN OF THINGS PAST
“The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.” (Leviticus 23:1-2)

INTRODUCTION

The relationship between the 'form' of the Feast of Passover and the 'fulfilment' of what Jesus did for you and for me on the Cross never ceases to amaze me.

Today we will continue to look at a further 12 ways in which the pattern of Passover was revealed that precious day on Calvary's hill. I trust it will be as faith building for you as it is for me.

PASSOVER PARTICULARS and THEIR FULLFILLMENT IN JESUS (2nd of 3)

Let's continue this week with the next 12 of the 27 incredible ways in which the Feast of Passover was fulfilled by Jesus.

6. A Lamb per Household:

One lamb provided a covering for each family.

A typical house in Egypt

Exodus 12:3-5

Jesus provides the only necessary covering for the household or family of God. That is, for all Christians.

7. To be Killed “Between the Evenings”:

The lamb was to be killed at a specific time. It was the blood arising from the death of the lamb that bought the protection, not its spotless life.

Literal translation of Exodus 12:6, Exodus 12:6

The hours between 9am and 6pm on the 14th day, when Jesus was crucified, precisely fulfilled this specified time criterion. Jesus died somewhere between 3pm and 6pm.

8. All the People Killed Their Lambs at the Same Time:

Symbolic of the nation acting as with one accord.

Exodus 12:6

The nation acted as one in the clamour to crucify Jesus. The entire Jewish nation was held responsible for His death.

9. On the Sides and Top of the Doorframes:

The blood, symbolic of death, was sprinkled on 3 places on the doorframe using a hyssop branch, a symbol of humility.

Exodus 12:7

Jesus shed His blood on the cross as a lamb, in the ultimate act of humility, while in His resurrection He became the door, the only way to God.

10. Eat the Lamb’s Body:

To be eaten roasted, with unleavened bread, (sinless) and bitter herbs.

Exodus 12:8-10

Jesus experienced the fire of God’s holiness at Calvary. He was of course sinless and the cross was a bitter experience for Him, taking on the sins of mankind.

11. The Lamb was Eaten in Haste:

They were to be ready to leave; fully clothed, belt hitched, sandals on and staff at the ready.

Exodus 12:11

Jesus provided our spiritual armour, ready for immediate action – belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel and the sword of truth in our hand. (Ephesians 6:13-17)

12. The Lord’s Passover:

The Lord (or the angel of death) ‘passed over’ the houses of the Israelites and the Egyptians where the blood was sprinkled.

Exodus 12:11-13

The blood of Jesus saves those who accept Him, from God’s eternal judgement.

13. A day of Commemoration:

To be remembered as an annual observance.

Exodus 12:14

Jesus replaced the Passover supper with Communion, to commemorate His sacrifice for us.

14. About Midnight:

The feast was celebrated just before midnight, the time of judgement and death.

Exodus 11:4-6

Jesus, by His death, prepared the way for God’s judgement at the end of the age – the final midnight hour.

15. At Sunset:

The remembrance of the feast was to be celebrated in the evening, after sunset.

Deuteronomy 16:2,6

When Jesus died the sun went down, supernaturally. The natural sun and the spiritual son set in unity with one another.

16. No Bones were to be Broken:

The lamb was not to have bones broken during its preparation. God gave no reason for this at the time.

Exodus 12:46

The soldiers broke the legs of the thieves, but Jesus had already died under the burden of our sins. None of His bones were broken in His sacrifice for us. The reason for the earlier instruction was now clear. (John 19:31-33)

17. Unleavened Bread to be Eaten for Seven Days:

All yeast, representative of sin, was to be removed from the house for a week.

Exodus 12:15-20

Jesus was the sinless lamb until, and then again after, His death on the cross.

NEXT WEEK THE PROPHETIC FEASTS OF THE LORD - Series 1 - THE SPRING FEASTS - Part 4

As we come to complete out study on the Feast of Passover, I pray that you will contemplate and absorb the truly wonderful pattern that God provided in the Feast and its incredible fulfilment 1,500 years later, in the person of Jesus.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

If last week's study didn't convince you about the relationship between Passover and Jesus, then this week's should surely have! For Jesus is our
Passover lamb whose blood was spilt to release us back into a relationship with God the Father, lost when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Wonderful!

The New Zealand team, the 'Black Socks', of our second summer sport softball, are considerably better than our cricket team, having won the last 3 World Series in 1996, 2000 & 2004, as well as a couple of earlier ones. You Americans can understand this a little more, as it is like baseball, played with a bigger, slightly softer ball, with an underarm pitch. And yes, we beat the USA at this game!

So until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD!

His servant and yours
