THE STEPS OF OBEDIENCE (Continued Part 3)

Steps 4a. and 5. follow.

4a. WILDERNESS TIME

a. MOSES AND THE STAFF: Moses waited in Midian for 40 YEARS before God appeared to him in the burning bush.

As we proceed, it will be easy to see why 40 is regarded as the number of trial and testing!

Acts 7:29-30

b. ISRAEL - OLD GENERATION: A two part wilderness experience.

a. The Egyptian Exile: The Israelites lived in Egypt for 400 YEARS, at first as guests, then as captives.

Genesis 15:13

b. Exploration of Canaan: The people had to wait 40 DAYS for the spies to return.

Numbers 13:25

c. ISRAEL - NEW GENERATION BORN IN EGYPT: Along with their elders, the new generation had to suffer 40 YEARS in the desert also.

Numbers 14:34

d. JESUS' LIFE: Jesus spent 40 DAYS fasting in the desert.

Matthew 4:2

e. THE APOSTLES: Twin times of testing.

a. From the Cross to the Resurrection: Waited 3 DAYS for the resurrection.

b. From the Assencion to Pentecost: It was 10 DAYS from the ascension of Jesus to the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost.

Acts 1:3, 2:1-4

f. OURSELVES: Our wilderness times, our times of trial and testing, last for VARIOUS periods, at different times during our lives.

5. RESPONSE

Our response to the times of wilderness experience determines how far we will go in God. If we learn from the experiences and apply the lessons we are being ashown we will grow in Jesus. Alternatively, we can reject the lessons and maybe, have to go through it all again!

a. MOSES AND THE STAFF: Sadly, in frustration with the people in the wilderness, Moses reaction was one of DISOBEDIENCE, which cost him the chance to take the people into the Promised Land, which was his heart's desire. The cost of disobedience is great!

Numbers 20:6-11

b. ISRAEL - OLD GENERATION:

a. The Egyptian Exile: The people OBEYED God by putting blood on the doorposts and so the angel of death 'passed over' their houses. This led to their release from captivity, from their wilderness experience.

Exodus 12:21-28

b. Exploration of Canaan: The people listened to the those promoting a bad report. This DISOBEDIENCE cost them dearly!

Numbers 13:26 - 14:19

c. ISRAEL - NEW GENERATION BORN IN EGYPT: The New Generation had suffered the time in the desert because of the disobedience of their parents, but because they themselves had OBEYED, God gave them a godly leader in Joshua, to take them into the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy 34:9

d. JESUS' LIFE: Because of His OBEDIENCE to the Father, Jesus was able to resist the devil's temptations.

Luke 4:12-13

e. THE APOSTLES: The book of Acts describes the amazing story of the apostles' OBEDIENCE. The church was set up, which today has spread round the earth!

f. OURSELVES: We have the choice of whether to OBEY or DISOBEY as we go through our wilderness experiences.

NEXT WEEK:

We look at the result of our response and the inheritance that is available to us when we obey God's will.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

Since the days of Adam and Eve, we have all been given freewill to make ongoing life decisions to obey or disobey God's will for us.

What will be our response to Him today?

Mount of Olives

Through the Lion’s Gate in the eastern wall of Old Jerusalem and east, across the Kidron Valley, lies the Mount of Olives. Also called Olivet (Hebrew name, Har Hamishha), the Mount of Olives is not a mountain at all, but a slope blending into other slopes. Despite this, it is the tallest of the mountains and hills around Jerusalem, rising approximately 2,900 feet above sea level.
