THE STEPS OF OBEDIENCE (Continued Part 4)

The final 2 steps, 6. & 7.

6. RESULT

The decisions we make have consequences.

a. MOSES AND THE STAFF: The result of Moses's disobedience in hitting the rock, was that he was prevented from fulfilling his life's dream of leading the people into the Promised Land.

Numbers 20:12

b. ISRAEL - OLD GENERATION: A 2 part response.

a. The Exodus: Because of their obedience, they were enabled to escape from their captivity in Egypt.

Exodus 12:1-51

b. Died in Desert: The cost of disobedience of the people was the same as for Moses - they didn't get to go into the Promised Land.

Numbers 14:20-23

c. ISRAEL - NEW GENERATION BORN IN EGYPT: These people got to enter the Promised Land through their obedience.

Joshua 1:1-11

d. JESUS' LIFE: As a result of Jesus' obedience in resisting the devil He was able to fulfill His given ministry as Saviour of the world.

John 12:47

e. THE APOSTLES: The Apostles established the church as far as Rome.

2 Timothy 1:16-17

f. OURSELVES: Our result is the result of our choice to obey or disobey. For each one has freewill to make the decision.

7. INHERITANCE CLAIMED

The result of our response determines the inheritance we claim as we will see through the examples we have been considering.

a. MOSES AND THE STAFF: Moses lost his inheritance, dying in Moab.

Deuteronomy 34:1-5

b. ISRAEL - OLD GENERATION:

a. Freedom from Slavery: For their obedience at the time of the first Passover, the people were released from their slavery in Egypt.

Exodus 14:30-32

b. Not Claimed: The adult generation that came out of Egypt all perished in the desert.

Deuteronomy 2:13-15

c. ISRAEL - NEW GENERATION BORN IN EGYPT: This new generation gradually claimed their inheritance of the Promised Land over a 400 year period from Joshua to David.

d. JESUS' LIFE: Jesus spent 31/2 years claiming His inheritance of souls.

John 17:1-5

e. THE APOSTLES: The apostles progressively claimed their inheritance of spreading the Gospel to Rome over a 30-35 year period.

f. OURSELVES: We claim our individual inheritance through obedience, at the desire and will of God.

NEXT WEEK: GOD AND MAN continues...

... as we look at 10 steps towards claiming our inheritance.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

Contrary to much of what we are taught, where we believe that God simply gives without expecting anything in return, the principle of obedience is largely overlooked. Therefore we, as Christians, live unsatisfactory and unfulfilled lives, for through to God's will for us, we are not receiving our inheritance.

The 'secret' therefore, to a fulfilled life is obedience to God's will.

Mount of Olives--Dominus Flevit Church

Christian tradition has it that after Jesus had left Bethphage on his way to Jerusalem, he passed through this place. It is on this site that the city of Jerusalem appeared to him, following a speech bemoaning the destiny of the city. This is echoed in the name of the church, which means in Latin: "The Lord Cried." This tradition traces back to Byzantine times. On constructing the new church in 1954, a large cemetery was uncovered further to the east, which dates from the age of the second Temple. In the courtyard lie sarcophagi, some of which carry inscriptions in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, with names like Zechariyah, Jesus, Mary, and ‘Azariyah. The alter, both in the new church and in the ancient church, faced towards the west, namely the Temple mount, not towards the east as usual. The modern aspe has an arched window through which the old city and temple mount loom up.
