LIVING WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is important to understand these 5 things if we are to build a close and meaningful relationship with the Holy Spirit.

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A 'GENTLE'MAN.

He speaks in a quiet voice. He is an encourager. We need peace and quiet to hear Him.

This is beautifully illustrated in the story of God appearing to Elijah.

1 Kings 19:9-13

We need to develop a gentle and quiet spirit.

1 Peter 3:3-4

2. WE DON'T HAVE TO DO WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS.

Like a true gentleman, the Holy Spirit suggests but He doesn't compel us to act.

We retain the freewill to do what the Lord asks of us or to refuse to do it.

Genesis 2:16-17

However, we ignore Him at our peril. It is not only non-Christians who are judged!

Revelation 20:11-14

3. WE HAVE TO PUT THE SPIRIT'S PROMISES INTO ACTION.

Visions and promises given to us by the Holy Spirit as encouragements in our walk with Jesus have to be acted upon to come about.

We must not be like the watchman!

Isaiah 56:10

Obedience brings blessing.

James 1:22-25

4. WE NEED TO AVOID SUBSTITUTING OUR OWN DESIRES FOR THE SPIRIT'S PROMISES.

It is so easy for us to convince ourselves that what we want to do for God, is what God wants us to do for Him! My experience has been that God desires to develop our areas of weakness rather than utilise our areas of strength, which is what we would expect and want Him to do, as that is easier on us!

Romans 10:3

You see, in our areas of weakness we have to be more reliant upon Him to fulfil His desires for us.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

5. IF WE CONTINUALLY REFUSE TO RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT'S WISHES HE WILL STOP TALKING TO US.

If we act on His guidance we will be blessed. If we refuse to take notice of what He says, He will stop saying it to us. An example is, if you commit a particular sin for long enough, you will no longer have a guilty conscience about doing it!

James 1:21-25

Ultimately there is a huge price to be paid for rejection of the Holy Spirit. Check it out!

Hebrews 6:4-6

The Holy Spirit is the power by which we live our Christian lives. He lives within us from the time we are saved (our spirit saved) but unless WE are prepared to release Him into our soul (mind, emotions and will) He cannot operate effectively in our life

NEXT WEEK: GOD AND MAN continues...

.....as we conclude our study on the Holy Spirit with a look at the 'Gifts of the Spirit'.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

All too often we look to the Holy Spirit simply to provide spectacular supernatural experiences rather than His main purpose which is to be our own, God provided, 'personal trainer', to use a term so popular in the world today.

We do not need to chase the Holy Spirit from meeting to meeting in order to get to know Him. For He lives inside of us! We simply need to look internally rather than externally and we will find Him.

"Thank you Father for sending the beautiful Holy Spirit to lead and guide me through the day. Amen."

ANCIENT ROME - JULIUS CAESAR

The bust of Julius Caesar is important in the study of Biblical Archaeology. It reveals the image and reality of a person who was the first real dictator of Rome and the one who befriended the Jews, giving them favor in the growing Roman Empire, which helped in the spreading of the gospel. The Roman authorities treated Christians as a Jewish sect and allowed Christians to meet just as the Jews were allowed their synagogues. It was only when the Emperor Nero blamed the Christians for the great fire which devastated much of Rome, that the Christians were accused of starting an entirely new religion and persecuted throughout the empire.

"He was skillful with sword and horse, and had amazing powers of physical endurance. He always was at the head of his army more often walking than riding, and went bareheaded both in sun and rain. When he encountered rivers too deep for wading, he would either swim or propel himself across on an inflated skin." SEUTONIUS
