WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

A NOTE FROM DAVID

This series is a repeat, as we finish our preparations for, travel to the UK to visit our family, then travel to Kenya and settle in. Please forgive me, but this is a most important series in coming to understand the development of the kingdom of God today.....

INTRODUCTION

When asking the Lord what He wanted me to write about next, He has led me to look at HIS CHURCH, not in the way of standard church history, but from His viewpoint. I will try my best to be obedient to His wishes. But any errors will be mine!

As you will soon see, the history of His church revolves around the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit's activity upon the earth, rather than what we consider the church to be.
Before I start I must give you a little personal testimony. I hope my testimony will show you that what is to come has to be of God, for it is outside my personal nature, experience and inheritance. I was brought up in a traditional Baptist church in the 1950's and 60's. (Yes I am that old! On the outside but not the inside! Well.....) My grandparents on both sides of the family were traditional churchgoers, as were my parents, as is my sister, and most have been active in church leadership. I was brought up to believe, yes, it was ingrained deep within me, that one had it all, when you gave your heart to Jesus and were water baptized (on the Baptist side) or attended church (on the Presbyterian side).

I tried giving my heart to Jesus. Nothing happened. My (younger than me) sister was getting water baptized, so I decided to as well. Nothing happened. I attended church until I was 30ish, and to all, including my wife Kathy, was a reasonable Christian. In fact, a pastor of mine suggested I should go to Baptist College and train for the ministry! If only he had known what was inside of me!

During my time at university, I went with some friends to an AOG Pentecostal meeting, hated it, and vowed and declared I would never go back! I didn't.

After a disagreement with the church, I left and went into the world, where I remained until I was 42, when we went bankrupt. At that time I was truly desperate, not being able to look after my family, so truly gave my heart to Jesus when waiting in the queue to register for the dole (Unemployment Benefit) at the Social Welfare Office in Takapuna, Auckland, where we were living at the time.

Over my time away from the church, Kathy got involved with the things of the Spirit. Didn't like it, but couldn't really complain, could I?

After my true conversion, we went back to a traditional Baptist church. Kathy did a Holy Spirit course at another church also. I could not understand the notes and ridiculed them. Not a good move! For the next year the Lord told me to go and do the course! Had to eat humble pie! Over that year of doing the 'Word of Life' course, I came into the things of the Holy Spirit, which changed my life. We eventually joined the Abundant Life Church, where we remained until the Lord took us away from Tauranga to the city of Napier, where we now live.

In Tauranga, while working in the fields attending to the flowers on our flower farm, the Lord, in an audible voice, called me to set up Walking With Jesus Ministries, to be based on Revelation 12:11, one of the results of which you are reading now.

11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11) (Emphasis added, as the Lord gave it to me.)

I do not want to go into now all the things the Lord has done. I just want to say that I now do my best to follow the leading of the Lord, through His precious Holy Spirit residing in me. (And in you too, if you truly believe.)

What follows will be a real test of this, for as you can see from the above, it is far outside my natural nature and inheritance, to understand the ways of the Spirit.

May the Lord help me as I bring His revelation to you.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Jesus Heals a Man Blind Since Birth (John 9:1-12)

The disciples asked why he was blind.

“It wasn’t because the man or his parents sinned, but so that what God can do may be shown in his life. We have to keep on doing the work of the One who sent me as long as it is still daytime. The night is coming when no one can work. 5While I’m here in the world I am the light of the world.”

“Go and wash yourself in the Pool of Siloam”

Jesus Finds the Excommunicated Blind Man (John 9:9:13-41)

He speaks to the man and then the Pharisees.

“Do you trust in the Son of man?”

“You’ve already seen him. He’s the one speaking with you now!”

“I’ve come into the world to bring judgment so that those who are blind may see, and those who see will become blind.

And then the Pharisees.

“If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty. But now that you say you see, your guilt remains.”

The Good Shepherd (John 10:1-18)

Jesus continued as the Pharisees would not accept what He was saying.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t come in through the gate of the sheepfold but climbs in some othe way is a thief and a robber. The one who comes in through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep respond to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. After bringing them out, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They won’t follow strangers. In fact they run away from a stranger because they don’t recognize the voice of strangers.”

“I tell you the truth: I am the gate of the sheepfold. All those who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. Anyone who comes in through me will be healed. They will be able to come and go, and find the food they need. The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I’ve come to bring you life, life full to overflowing. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The man paid to look after the sheep is not the shepherd and he runs away when he sees the wolf coming. He abandons the sheep because they’re not his, and the wolf attacks and scatters the flock for the man is only working for pay and doesn’t care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know who are mine, and they know me, just as the Father knows me and I know him. I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock with one shepherd.

“This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so I may take it up again. No one takes it from me; I choose to lay it down. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it back. This is the command my Father gave me.”

A NOTE ABOUT AFRICA

FACTS ABOUT KENYA

1. Kenyan National Dishes

The first of our Kenya facts centers on food. Kenya has a very rich and diverse history in terms of its dishes. There are four dishes which are of particular note. The first is Ugali, which is a maize cake and is used as a carbohydrate accompaniment to vegetable and meat dishes. The second is called Sukuma Wiki, and is a stew made from green, leafy vegetables. In in many places in Kenya, it becomes the foundation for a meal. The name Sukuma Wiki has an interesting translation. It means “stretch the week” and it implies that the dish is used to eke out other ingredients for meals. Thirdly, there is Nyama Choma, which is cooked over an open fire and made from roasted goat or beef. It is usually served with Ugali. Finally, there is Kachumbari, a dish which many of us might recognize as a salsa type accompaniment, made from chopped tomatoes, onion, pepper, cilantro and lemon juice. It is usually served with Nyama Choma. (Photo: Ugali and Cabbage)

2. There Are 70 Different Tribes in Kenya

Kenya facts tell us that the county has a diverse heritage in terms of its people. It’s widely accepted that the earliest origins of man can be traced back five million years ago to what is now the northern half of Kenya. In the 21st century, there are some 70 tribes in the country, speaking 30 different languages or dialects. The biggest ethnic group is called the Kikuyu and the smallest is the El Molo who live on Lake Turkana. The tribes can generally be split into three different main groupings: the Bantu who arrived in 500BC from West Africa; the Niloticwho arrived in 1000BC from the Sudan; and, finally, the Cushites who arrived in 2000BC from Somalia.

3. There Are 4 Major Tribal Styles of Music in Kenya

Whilse the contemporary music scene in Kenya is strong, each ethnic tribe has its own musical heritage and style stretching back many thousands of years. There are four main types of song/music that reflect Kenyan culture the most. These are KikuyuLuhya OhanglaLingala and Benga music. The first two styles sound more contemporary and are usually backed by strong drumming patterns and guitars. If you head towards the Kenyan coast you might be more likely to hear a style of music called Taraab, which is strongly influenced by Indian and Arab culture and incorporates their traditional beats and rhythms into the Kenyan style.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

TWENTY-FIVE COMMANDMENTS OF JESUS:

AS DETAILED IN THE 4 GOSPELS

Not clearly numbered and listed, as in the Old Testament outward Law of the 10 Commandments, these commands are found among the teachings of Jesus in the 4 Gospels, and are available for all who have a heart to seek them.

We all too easily think, with the emphasis that Jesus places on love and forgiveness, that he didn't teach any absolutes. But, as can be seen here, Jesus did place boundaries on believer's behaviour, along with instructions for Godly living.

These are grouped into 3 categories for easier comprehension.

Don't take my word for it! Study the Scriptures!

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

RELIGION, REVELATION  AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1051. Revelation is from God's heart, religion, a product of the heart of man.

1052. Today's revelation becomes tomorrow's religion.

1053. One dose of God is worth more than a billion of religion!

1054. When mankind cannot accept God's revelation, they adapt it to become religion.

1055. The cost of God's kingdom is obedience, religion's, money. Most of us take the easy option!

1056. Religion goes as God's kingdom grows.

1057. Revelation tells us God's kingdom is available now, while religion places itself in the now, with the kingdom to be found in the future.

1058. Religion may well be the opiate of the masses, but God's kingdom is possessed by the godly, right now!

1059. Religion comes and religion goes, but God's kingdom goes on forever.

1060. God's kingdom now isn't freely given, but possessed through godly obedience.

4. Trumped!

There were two rich brothers who looked great on the outside, even attending church regularly, but whose hearts were evil.

A new, more astute pastor arrived at the church. The congregation grew and a fund raising campaign was started to extend the church.

All of a sudden, one of the brothers died. The day before the funeral the remaining brother sidled up to the pastor and gave him a cheque for the full amount needed to complete the extensions. “Just one condition,” he said. At the funeral you must say that my brother was a saint.”

The pastor gave him his word and deposited the cheque.

The next day, at the funeral, the pastor let it all go. “He was an evil man,” he said, hard on his wife and family, corrupt in business,” and on and on. He concluded, “but, compared to his brother, he was a saint.”

5. The Flock

Three priests were having lunch in a restaurant.

One said, "You know, all summer I have been having trouble with bats in the belfry. I’ve tried everything to get rid of them - noise, spray, cats – but nothing works.

Me too, said the second. I’ve got hundreds living there too. I even had the place fumigated, but still they stay.

That’s simple, said the third. "I baptised all mine – made them members of the church….. Haven’t had a single one back since!"

QWIK QWIP: “Give God what's right - not what's left.”

6. You Can Bank On It!

A woman went into the bank to cash a cheque before going Christmas shopping.

"What denominations would you like?" asked the Teller.

"Oh, good heavens – has it come to this!" said the woman. "Well give me 50 Baptists and 50 Presbyterians, please."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What creature has infrared receptors to help it catch prey in total darkness?

ANSWER:   Snakes! Certain snakes, including Pythons and Boa Constrictors, have pits along their lips that are actually infrared heat receptors. These receptors can help a snake locate prey even in total darkness. (I pray not to be the prey! What am I worried about? New Zealand is about the only country that doesn’t have snakes!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is the lowest place on Earth?

SOME FUN FACTS

4. Don’t Worry About It

In the event of a major meteorite collision with the earth, your odds of dying are 1 in 20,000. Nearly 400 tons of space debris rain down on us daily, far too small an amount to detect. To date, no known big asteroid is on a collision path with Earth. However, a near miss by one in 1996 was found only four days before it passed within 280,000 miles of Earth, a hairbreadth by space standards. (But a long way from home.)

5. The Ultimate Obsession

King Charles VIII of France, who ascended to the throne in 1483, was obsessed with the idea of being poisoned. As his phobia grew, the monarch ate so little that he died of malnutrition circa 1498. (The ultimate diet!)

6. A Living Monument To War

Built in only 16 months between 1941 and 1942, the Pentagon is only 71ft tall, yet it has 5 floors, 17.5 miles of corridors, 150 stairways, 280 restrooms, 685 drinking fountains, 7,748 windows and workers replace more than 250 light bulbs each day. (A bureaucratic battlefield.)

GREAT GROANERS

MAKING DOUGH
Years ago there was a baker's assistant whose sole job was to pour the dough mixture for making sausage rolls (apparently the royal family loved sausage). Because people were identified by their professions, he was just called Richard the Pourer. One day Richard ran out of some key ingredients, namely a secret spice he used in the batter. He called his apprentice and sent him to the store to buy more spices. When the apprentice arrived at the store, he found that he had forgotten the name of the ingredient. Hoping that the storekeeper might be able to figure it out, he described it to him, "it's for Richard the Pourer for batter for wurst."

THE WINTER DRILL
During the cold months, we keep our little ceramic elves that we use in the garden during the summer, stored overhead in the garage. At Halloween time, when I went out in the garage, I imagined I could hear them up there, mocking me. It sounded like they were marching and doing military-type exercises..... Ever since then, I've been scared of gnome attic drills. by David Reihmer

AWOL
A sailor was caught AWOL as he tried to sneak on board his ship at about 3 am. The chief petty officer spied him and ordered the sailor to stop. Upon hearing the sailor's lame explanation for his tardiness, the officer ordered the sailor, "Take this broom and sweep every link on this anchor chain by morning or it's the brig for you!" The sailor began to pick up the broom and commence performing his charge. As he began to sweep, a tern landed on the broom handle. The sailor yelled at the bird to leave, but it didn't. The lad picked the tern off the broom handle, giving the bird a toss. The bird left, only to return and light once again on the broom handle. The sailor went through the same routine all over again, with the same result. He couldn't get any cleaning done because he can only sweep at the chain once or twice before the blasted bird returns. When morning came, so did the chief petty officer, to check up on his wayward sailor. "What in the heck have you been doing all night? This chain is no cleaner than when you started! What have you to say for yourself, sailor?" barked the chief. "Honest, chief," came the reply, "I tossed a tern all night and couldn't sweep a link!"

Two years post-earthquake, Nepal seeing a Gospel revival

In the wake of the horrifying natural disaster, God has used the Church’s witness to prompt a surge of new Christian believers in the majority Hindu nation.

Nepal (MNN) — It’s been just over two years since a major 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal. The quake killed 9,000 people impacted eight million lives. Over 600,000 buildings and structures were damaged. The rebuilding process is still ongoing.

Deepak*, a program director in Nepal with Global Disciples, says that in the wake of the horrifying natural disaster, God has used the Church’s witness to prompt a surge of new Christian believers in the majority Hindu nation.

“In fact, we had a weekly newspaper which said that after the earthquake, many people had turned to Christ, and the journalist brought to blame the Christian organizations and churches for doing evangelism after the earthquake. But it was comforting to us because everyone has seen what Christians have done. So we just want to praise God.”

Through Global Disciples, Deepak leads Nepali churches in evangelism training and church planting. There are currently at least 70 programs, and they have six local staff members.

When Deepak first started off in ministry, there weren’t as many local resources for evangelism programs. But as a pastor of a local church, the Lord stirred Deepak’s heart to specifically reach young Nepali believers and encourage them in witnessing and prayer.

“So we as a church decided to organize the discipleship program in Nepal and we encouraged all our members to pray and help as much as they could. Since the program was in the village and many people didn’t have money, they brought food like potatoes, onion, garlic, chicken, whatever they had at home,” he shares.

“The news spread around in other villages and many other pastors also heard the way we were training our young people and sending them through local resources. Different leaders from different parts of Nepal began to call me and ask me how we were doing our ministry. So it was not difficult for me to tell them since it was all done by local resources, through the help of the congregation. I was invited to share the way we were training our young people and doing church planting.”

As Deepak traveled around Nepal and shared their training module at other churches, many other Christian leaders adopted the evangelism and discipleship training methods. The multiplication has been inspiring and the Church movement has grown in the blessing of the Holy Spirit.

“We have a plethora of churches in different parts of Nepal where the leaders come together and once a year they organize training their young people for 10 days, some train for 20 days, and then they send teams to villages for outreach where they get many opportunities to witness Jesus. As they meet sick people or demonized people, all these young people are excited to pray in the name of Jesus and cast out demons.”

Training taking place on a Nepali mountaintop with Global Disciples.

However, the Hindu villages they go into aren’t always open to the Gospel, and some are even hostile to witnessing efforts.

Deepak shares the story of one village, and how God moved. “They wrote a sign board saying ‘conversion prohibited village’, which means they decided that no one should change their religion. They found a man who was a Christian and the whole village came and they forced him to return to Hinduism, so he had to do that. But after a few months, the man who took the initiative in doing this, he ended up believing in Jesus, because he also needed Jesus! So, it is like we have many opportunities.”

As God continues to multiply and bless the Church in Nepal, please commit to praying for Deepak and other Christian leaders like him.

Deepak says, “Hindus in different places are united now against the Christians. So you can pray that God will give boldness to the Christians to witness in the name of Jesus so we can see the multiplication of churches on the mountains.”

TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'

INTRODUCTION

The more I grow in Jesus, the more I study history, and the more revelation the Lord gives me, the more I see differences between where we are as 'the church' and where we should be as integral members of 'the kingdom' of God.

Surely the two are the same? Yes, they are meant to be. But the reality is that they are not. For over the 2000 odd years since Jesus, the church has become an 'institution', with a life of its own, rather than being an 'instrument' to build God's kingdom.

Please don't get me wrong! The church does many good things. It has spread the Good News of Jesus around most of the earth. It is the leading supplier of social services worldwide. It has influenced society and history over the last 2000 years more than any other institution. One third of the world's population is Christian, or nominally so. Considerable milestones have been achieved.

Yet, is the church today truly ushering in the kingdom of God? Do we really mean, or believe it, when we pray.....

10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

Sadly, the reality is, in much of the church, God's kingdom has become man's kingdom, where the protection and promotion of the individual church, denomination or grouping, has become more important in men's minds than building the kingdom of God. We have moved from a single church kingdom in the 1st century to over 30,000 church kingdoms now!

WAXING LYRICAL

This is being written as we expand our business by 50%, opening 3 new shops over a 6 week period. But can I keep my priorities right?

BUSY, BUSY

Lots of perspiration,
But no inspiration.
So please bear with me,
Until I'm set free!

Another shop to open this week,
The toilet there, it does leak!
So many things there are still to do,
While also to God, to remain true.

When you are expanding in the business
Tis easy to get taken over by busyness
Take a rest David, seek the Lord,
With Him do now strike a chord.

What is my priority?
Who gets seniority?
It's so very very easy to go astray,
In the good intentions of the day.

Tomorrow I will take time out to preach,
Maybe the message, it will me teach!
God can grab our attention,
In ways we never mention.

Now as I do finish this rhyme,
Feeling better about my time.
Thankyou Lord for speaking to me this way,
For giving me strength to face the day.

A DAVID MUSING

June has arrived so can now count down the days with ease! 20 - 5 (monay) = 15 days.

Until we leave our city of Napier it is -3 days = 12 days!

In the meantime, on Tuesday, I am having my appendix removed! A surpise as I haven't had any problems, but a scan showed it is enlarged and inflamed and needs to come out! Fortunately, laproscopic surgery is used, so I will be OK to fly a fortnight later.

However I wont be able to shift the remainder of our furniture, due to restrictions on lifting! Ah well, so be it!

Other than this, our arrangements are going well. Kathy has been busy packing things that we are keeping and giving  away the rest. We thank our friends Robin and Rosemary for storing our personal items for us.

Your prayers for us over this time would be appreciated.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "... so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole - and have a smile while doing it!
