WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH
We continue looking at prominent spirit filled men who lived during the 4th to 6th centuries AD.
THE MONASTICS 325-600AD
AMBROSE (AD340-397) Giving up a successful political career, Ambrose became bishop of Milan in 374. An able administrator and preacher, he brought Augustine to Jesus, baptizing him in 387.
Augustine, in turn, reported of a time in Milan when a 'vast throng' gathered at the tomb of two martyrs, the location of which had been revealed by the Holy Spirit to Ambrose. As the crowd gathered there, a blind man miraculously received his sight.
Ambrose lived in a time of general spiritual decline, which he tried to counteract in his work "Of The Holy Spirit", linking the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son through active spiritual gifts.....
You see the Father and Christ also set teachers in the churches; and as the Father gives the gift of healings, so too does the Son give; as the Father gives the gift of tongues, so too has the Son also granted it. In like manner we have heard also above concerning the Holy Spirit that He too grants the same kinds of graces. So, then, the Spirit gives the same gifts as the Father and the Son also gives them.
JEROME (AD347-420)
Becoming a Christian at an early age, Jerome, an astute scholar, loved classical learning. While travelling through Antioch, he became very sick and the Lord appeared to him, reproaching him for his devotion to classical study.
This encounter with God changed Jerome's life. Repenting of his former ways and living as a hermit near Antioch, he became an avid bible student, so much so that he was described by one writer (Sullivan) as the ablest scholar the ancient Western Church could boast."
Later, having moved to Palestine to head a monastery, he produced the works for which he is noted, the greatest being "The Vulgate" (pictured), the famous and hugely influential Latin translation of the Bible. From the Council of Trent (1545-63) until recently, The Vulgate was the only official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church.
Jerome was a firm believer in the power of the Holy Spirit to work miracles. This was particularly noted in his work "The Life of Saint Hilarion" (see last week). Jerome tells of Hilarion stilling a raging sea brought about by a violent earthquake (perhaps a tidal wave?) that was about to engulf the village of Epidaurus, by raising his outstretched hands. Jerome then comments.....
Verily, what was said to the Apostles, "If ye have faith, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove into the sea, and it shall be done," may even be literally fulfilled if one has such faith as the Lord commanded the Apostles to have.
Living on into the 5th century, it is clear that Jerome considered that spiritual gifts were still applicable to the church of the time and were not about to cease.
So we can continue to say that.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS continuedThe Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.
The Faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5-13, Luke 7;1-10)
“I will go and heal him.â€
“ I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.â€
“Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.â€
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son (Luke 7:11-17)
“Don’t cry.â€
“Young man, I say to you, get up!â€
Jesus and John the Baptist (Matthew 11:1-19, Luke 7:18-35)
“Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.â€
“What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: â€â€˜I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.â€
“To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:†‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.â€â€™ But wisdom is proved right by all her children.â€
Woe on Unrepentant Cities (Matthew 11:20-30)
21 “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.â€
Jesus Anointed at Simon’s House* (Luke 7:36-50)
“Simon, I have something to tell you.â€
41 “Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?â€
“You have judged correctly,â€
“Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.â€
“Your sins are forgiven.â€
“Your faith has saved you; go in peace.â€

TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE444. If I knew everything in the world, I would be most confused!
445. The pursuit of knowledge is excellent, the pursuit of truth, unsurpassable.
446. The more I learn, the less I know, so to my God I’d rather go.
447. Truth is like tightening a nut. There is only a small difference between maximum effectiveness and stripping the thread.
448. Human knowledge corrupts. Absolute knowledge corrupts absolutely.
449. Knowledge seeks truth but only God can reveal the truth.
450. Truth provides the foundation upon which the house of knowledge should be built.
451. Knowledge is relative, truth absolute. Problems arise when we confuse the two.
452. If I have all knowledge in the world but have not the truth, I am as nothing.
453. Computers are able to process endless knowledge, but only humans can discern truth.

'Arabs Realizing Israel Is Not the Enemy'
Ryan Jones : Oct 18, 2013 : Israel Today"Many nations in the area have a strong desire to eliminate the influence of Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaida. This is an important development, even historic." –Benjamin Netanyahu
Israeli Arab flagsOne of the very few positive outcomes of the regional crises engulfing the Middle East is that a number of Arab states are beginning to realize that Israel is not the true enemy.
"For the first time in Israel's existence, there is an understanding in the Arab world, that Israel is not the enemy of the Arabs. On many issues, we are united," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the opening of the Knesset's winter session earlier this week.
Netanyahu noted that the hijacking of pro-democracy revolutions in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere had turned many of the Arab states against the same Islamist regimes and groups that most threaten Israel.
"Many nations in the area have a strong desire to eliminate the influence of Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaida," the prime minister said. "This is an important development, even historic."
An unnamed government source later revealed to Israel's Ynet news portal that Netanyahu's remarks were not just flowery rhetoric, but a veiled announcement that Israel and several Arab states, some of which have no official diplomatic ties with the Jewish state, are now actively cooperating on various fronts.
With America increasingly seen as an unreliable ally, Arab states are looking for a strong anchor nation with which they can coordinate their own battles against Islamic extremism and Iranian hegemony.
Many have found that ally in Israel, even if the bulk of the unprecedented cooperation must happen in secret.

WAXING LYRICAL
It is amazing how verse can come to your rescue when prose fails! Well - maybe! You be the judge!INSPIRATION ZERO!
Busy week,
As we speak,
But what to write,
As blank as night!
Inspiration's a funny thing,
Comes and goes on a wing.
Often there, sometimes not,
Have no outline of a plot.
Well David, why not try a rhyme?
In for a penny, in for a dime.
Something may come of it, you never know,
It's working, from a beginning so slow.
Whether or not this is inspiration, is for you to decide,
You may think it is, or very well my intelligence deride.
But the lines of verse are getting longer and longer and longer,
The hitting of keys, stronger and stronger, yes, even stronger!
So if you lack inspiration,
A rhyme brings impartation.
It may not make sense,
Rather be nonsense!
Bit it fills the page.
Likely a sign of age!
Another job done!
Wasn't that fun!
(NO..... IT WASN'T! .....Well, at least I tried!)

A DAVID MUSING
Change is a difficult thing - whether it be in daily routine or of the soul.Daily routine has changed tremendously for me as I now do my ministry work full time from home, rather than as a part of my day while running a business.
While the pressure is less, I find it very quiet, as my wife Kathy has been working or out virtually every day over the past 3 weeks I have been at home. Seeing less of her now than when I was at work! LOL!
While changing routine is a challenge, it is nothing like the change desired, indeed required of us, when we become a follower of Jesus. For we are to be reborn in His image, to replace our identity with His, to live like Jesus did. This is indeed a lifelong challenge, as our old nature continues to battle with the new.
Unfortunately, most in the church do not understand this, and continue to live their old lives, with a 'flavoursome topping' of Jesus on a Sunday, or when it suits them.
A true disciple however, submits their life fully to their Saviour and Lord. Take me, change me, and use me Lord, for whatever You purpose for the rest of my life.
PS: Managed to get PGIM finished at my normal time this week! Actually an hour os so earlier than normal! Adapted to change! LOL!
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
