TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'

A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 26 weeks of PGIM)

FROM “MUSICAL” TO “HEART WORSHIP”

After spending 12 weeks looking at the 'organic' nature of the kingdom church, today we will consider one of the most contentious areas of 'organised' church life, the area of worship.

Ask any pastor, priest or minister what causes the most ruction within their church and you can virtually guarantee that the form of worship will be near or the top of their list! Why is this? Simply because we take a group of individuals, each with their own level and way of interacting with their God, and try to unite them as one in the tradition of the church in they are worshipping. Impossible!

You see, as God intended it, worship is an ongoing personal experience between us and our Lord, not a 10, 20, 40, or 60 minute experience, on the 1 or more times a week we gather together. We relate worship to singing, God relates worship to living. Worship is more than a song, it is a lifestyle.

I love worship! I love singing (even dancing at times!) and worshipping my God in a group situation. I can adapt to many different worship styles, for I have learned to through visiting different types of churches in many varied cultures.

Within the pentecostal tradition, a 'formula' (yes, even in worship!) has been developed to bring the people into the presence of God. You start with songs of THANKSGIVING.....

10 When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their vestments and with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their places to praise the LORD, as prescribed by David king of Israel. 11 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: “He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.” (Ezra 3:10-11a)

.....which are followed by PRAISE songs.....

11 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: “He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.” (Ezra 3:11)

.....to lead into WORSHIP.....

4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds— his name is the LORD— and rejoice before him. (Psalm 68:4)

Interestingly, I could not find a single verse, directly relating song to worship - as opposed to thanksgiving and praise. 'Extolling', as used here, is probably a better description of what we do during our worship times!

Worship through song and dance, in the Old Testament, is epitomized by King David dancing in his underwear, in front of the Ark, as he took it from Obed-Edom to Jerusalem.....

14 David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. (2 Samuel 6:14-15)

This was hated by the 'religionists', symbolized by his wife Michal.....

16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart. (2 Samuel 6:16)

Nothing has changed today. Try exuberantly dancing and shouting with unbridled enthusiasm, in your underwear, during worship today, and see what reaction you get!

However, David's motivation came not from voyeurism, but from a heart sold out to God. That is why God chose him to replace the 'peoples choice' King Saul (Michal's father), as king.....

14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command.” (1 Samuel 13:14)

The worshipful heart of David is shown throughout the Psalms he wrote. Just one example.....

2 Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; 3 for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth. (Psalm 26:2-3)

At the exact time of the death of Jesus, the curtain in the Temple was supernaturally ripped open and we were given access to the very throne of God, 24/7.....

44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. (Luke 23:44-6)

In the words of the 'summary' New Commandment.....

27 He answered: ”‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Luke 10:27)

.....we are to worship our Lord with our entire being, all day, every day of our life.....

23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-4)

This, total worship, is the way of the kingdom.

FROM THE WORD

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

"David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. Then David was angry because the LORD’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household. Now King David was told, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart. They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes. When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death." (2 Samuel 6:1-23)

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

"The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”" (John 4:1-26)

649. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
God went to the Germans and said, "I have Commandments for you that will make your lives better." And the Germans asked, "What are Commandments?" And the Lord said, "They are rules for living." "Can you give us an example?" "Thou shalt not kill." "Not kill? We're not interested."

So He went to the Italians and said, "I have Commandments." And the Italians wanted an example, and the Lord said, "Thou shalt not steal." "Not steal? We're not interested."

He went to the French and said, "I have Commandments." The French wanted an example and the Lord said, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." "Not commit adultery? We're not interested."

He went to the Jews and said, "I have Commandments." "Commandments?" they said, "how much are they?" "They're free." "We'll take 10."

648. THANK YOU LORD
A Grandmother was headed out the door to go to church one Sunday when she got a call from her daughter. "Would Grandma like to have her three little grandchildren visit while her daughter and son-in-law took a five-day holiday trip?"

Grandma was so delighted she put five dollars in the collection basket at church and thanked the Lord. The Sunday after the grandchildren had returned home, she put fifty dollars in the collection, and thanked the Lord!

647. GIVING THANKS
A TEENAGER who had just received her learner's permit offered to drive her parents to church. After a wild ride, they finally reached their destination. The driver's mother got out of the car and said, "Thank you."

"Anytime," her daughter replied.

As the woman slammed the door, she said, "I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to God."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What bird migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic each year?

ANSWER: The Arctic tern. This travelling bird flies nearly 22,000 miles each year in its migration (roughly the circumference of the Earth), making it the animal with the greatest migratory range. Takes six months to fly each way. It migrates to live! It lives to migrate! (Gets there, then ‘terns’ round and goes back!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where and when was the first underground train line opened?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

860. HIM AND HER
Generally speaking, men are better at reading the small print than women, while women can hear better. (What did you say?)

861. A VEGETARIAN KILLER
Amazingly, Hitler was a vegetarian. (Yet treated Jews and others as animals to be hunted and killed.)

862. STICKING TOGETHER
When a young crocodile cries out in distress, any adult within hearing range will respond with a fully-fledged attack, even though it is not related. (Not surprising the species has survived so long. Something for us to learn?)

LIFE'S A LAUGH

51. ALL LIT UP!
When Edward M. Karrmann, insurance president, celebrated his 60th birthday, neighbors from a hotel across the street from his Indianapolis office sent over two bottles of champagne and a birthday cake. When Karrmann opened the box containing the cake, he found an apologetic note from the hotel management saying that they didn't have 60 birthday candles.

Instead, in the middle of the cake was a 60-watt light bulb.

52. MALE LOGIC
When a young man left his dorm and moved into an apartment, he went shopping for cleaning equipment. His cart was loaded with a broom, mop, dust-pan, sponges and a full array of cleaning products. At the last minute he topped off his cart with a lone food purchase - a large bag of potato chips.

Seeing the checkout clerk's quizzical look, he explained, "I'm a very messy eater."

53. CONCRETE ADVICE
After a lady's car had leaked motor oil on her cement driveway, she bought a large bag of cat litter to soak it up. It worked so well, that she went back to the convenience store to get another bag to finish the job.

Remembering her, the clerk remarked, "Lady, if that were my cat, I'd put him outside!"

54. IF IN DOUBT.......
A lady was lost in her car in a terrible snowstorm. She remembered what her dad had once told her: "If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, wait for a snowplow and just follow it."

Pretty soon, a snowplow came by and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about 45 minutes. Finally, the driver of the snowplow got out and asked what she was doing.

She explained that her dad had told her that if she ever got stuck in a snowstorm to follow a plow.

The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm through with the Wal-Mart lot. Now you can follow me over to K-Mart."

55. I FIGURED
Checking out of the grocery store, I noticed that the bag boy was eyeing my two adopted children curiously. They often draw scrutiny, since my son's a blond Russian, while my daughter has shiny black Haitian skin. The boy continued staring as he carried our groceries to the car. Finally, he asked. "Those your kids?"

"Yes, they are!" I answered proudly.

"They adopted?" he asked.

"Yes," I replied.

"I thought so," he concluded. "I figured you're too old to have kids that small."

BIBLE TRIVIA (About The Bible)

SOME BIBLE BOOKS ARE JUST HALF A PAGE.....

Saeed's Wife Uses UN Speech to 'Plant Gospel'

The White House and U.S. State Department are once again calling on Iran to release an American pastor jailed for his faith.

Saeed Abedini is serving an eight-year prison sentence in one of the most brutal prisons in the world for sharing the Gospel.

On Monday, Abedini's wife appeared before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to plead for her husband's release.

"Why is he being held? Because he exercised his rights of religious freedom, expression and peaceful assembly," she told the council. "I hope that my presence here today will put a face to those that suffer when a government does not uphold its obligation to protect these freedoms."

The 33-year-old Iranian-born pastor has endured torture while in prison.

"On at least two known occasions, Iran's officials have physically tortured my husband," she testified. "These instances of torture have caused my husband to have symptoms of internal bleeding."

The White House said it was "deeply concerned" Monday about Pastor Abedini's plight and promised to press for his release until he was back home with his family. The U.S State Department also chimed in.

"We condemn Iran's continued violation of the universal right of freedom of religion and call on the Iranian authorities to respect Mr. Abedini's human rights and release him," Wendy Sherman, the State Department's lead nuclear negotiator, said.

"We will continue to pursue this in every way possible that we can, through every channel we possibly can," she vowed.

But Abedini is not alone.

Last month, Iranian authorities shut down the largest Persian-language church and arrested its pastor. With less than two weeks to go before Iranians pick their next president, authorities are reportedly targeting individuals and groups deemed dangerous, including growing Christian churches.

Just before ending her U.N. speech, Naghmeh said on Facebook that she wanted to use her appearance to plant the seeds of the Gospel message before a global audience.

"Iran has kept Saeed's imprisonment because Saeed believes in forgiveness of sin through Jesus Christ and that whoever accepts this forgiveness of sin can be reconciled to the God of peace and love," she wrote. "This is the God of peace we are all searching for."

WAXING LYRICAL

This is my very first poem, written during a really hard period in my life. For we had
lost our business and I was fighting desperately, ultimately unsuccessfully, to stave off
bankruptcy. Written in the days before I became a Christian, (it took bankruptcy to do
that – some of us are slow learners!) but I was starting to look at what really are the
important things in life.

BESIDE ME

When I look back on all we have done together,
Picking the daffodils in the wind and the rain,
I am so grateful that whatever the weather,
And bearing the back that gives you pain,
You have walked beside me.

At times it has been a lot of fun,
We have laughed, cried and had the odd thrill.
But more often you have had to run,
To race, to get the job done, but still,
You have walked beside me.

And now, when my life has collapsed around my ears,
Your strength has helped me to keep my sanity,
When I have been down and experienced new fears, While I have suffered great blows
to my vanity,
You have walked beside me.

I have worked so hard all these years,
To yours and the family’s cost.
It is hard sometimes to fight back the tears,
Yet no matter how much we have lost,
You have walked beside me.

Your beauty has always drawn me to you
Like the bee to the flower of the honeysuckle tree,
To me I know you have always been true
While surely, sometimes you have wanted to be free,
You have walked beside me.

And though life at times seems bitter, twisted and curled,
Your love gives me strength to go on fighting.
I am just the luckiest man in all the world,
To have your name next to mine in writing.
You have walked beside me.

And now as I have to rebuild my life’
To meet new challenges, to reach new goals.
How blessed I am to have you as my wife,
To know that however the countryside rolls,
You will walk beside me.

A DAVID MUSING

Kathy and I have both experienced 'the bot' this week! Nothing like sharing everything in marriage! I have now come back to normal, while Kathy will do so over the next couple of days.

We are very blessed to have kept excellent health through our lives. So we are not used to being sick!

I know that there will be many readers who have experienced accidents or sicknesses which have had a profound affect on your life. Life is not fair! If becoming a Christian actually brought us the health, wealth and happiness which some falsely preach, nearly everyone would quickly become a believer! For we naturally desire the 'good things of life', as did Adam and Eve when they chose to put them first by eating the forbidden fruit. But that it is not how it is.

Jesus, on that dark, yet celebratory day on Calvary's hill, paid the price so that we might again choose to be reconciled to our heavenly Father, to be guided through life's ups and downs by the precious presence of the Holy Spirit living within.

I can testify that this has made a huge difference to my life. Interestingly, I have grown spiritually more in the tough times, than in the good. How about you?

"Thank you Father, thank you Jesus, thank you Holy Spirit, for allowing me to join your family."

Until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
