CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?

Last week's discussion leads on to this week's word.

Is the 'pastoral' foundation of the post Reformation church scriptural?

Few would disagree that the church structure today is based on pastors. While some of the early Reformation churches eg. Lutheran, Anglican/Episcopal, retained a modified leadership structure similar to the Roman Catholic Church which they came from, more radical churches appointed Ministers/Pastors to head individual churches, with a weaker overseeing structure of denominational leadership. With the arrival of the Pentecostal movement in the early 20th century, the title Pastors became more in vogue and today 'Pastors' are dominant in leadership, both numerically and in effective influence.

Yet, in both the KJV and the NIV the word is mentioned only once in the New Testament.....

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up (Ephesians 4:11-12)

In another list of spiritual giftings, setting out church leadership order, pastors are not even mentioned.....

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. (1 Corinthians 12:27-31)

And yet we base the church on the pivot of pastors who only have one New Testament mention!

The word 'pastor' effectively translates to 'shepherd'. Jesus came as both the gate and the shepherd of His flock.....

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:7-16)

Who was to come in the place of Jesus? The answer may surprise you! It is not a man but.....

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” (John 14:15-21)

Is it the Pope? The apostle? The prophet? Or the Pastor? No! Jesus, our shepherd, left us the precious Holy Spirit, to lead and guide us through our personal and 'church' life.

The role of the shepherd (pastor) is defined by Peter.....

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. (1 Peter 5:1-4)

Please, this is not David speaking. It is Scripture. We have based the church on the wrong foundation, that of the pastor, rather than the Holy Spirit.

We will discover how this happened, with its huge implications for the church, in the weeks ahead.

Continued next week.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

How Many Will be Saved? (Luke 13:22-30)
A question put to Jesus.

“Try very hard to enter the narrow doorway, because I tell you that many will try to go in, and won’t succeed. Once the house owner gets up and closes the door, you’ll be standing outside knocking on the door, saying, ‘Master, please open the door for us.’ But he’ll reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you’re from.’
Then you’ll say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets!’ He’ll reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t
know you or where you’re from. Get away from me, all of you who don’t do what’s right!’ There will be crying and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you are thrown out. People will come from the east and the west, the north and the south, and they will sit down to eat in the kingdom of God. For the last shall be first, and the first shall be last.”

Pharisees Warn Jesus About Herod (Luke 13:31-5)
And his intention to kill Jesus.

“Go tell that fox that I will go on driving out demons and healing people for today and tomorrow, and on the third day I’ll achieve what I came to do. Well anyway I must continue on my way for today and tomorrow, and the day after. For it wouldn’t be right for a prophet to die outside of Jerusalem!
“Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have wanted to gather all your children together just like a hen does with her chicks under her wings, but you refused! Look, your house is left desolate, and I tell you that you won’t see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE

454. God created mankind to live in His truth. Satan’s temptation is to live in earthly knowledge. Which will we choose?

455. Satan was the first to substitute knowledge for truth. His plan hasn’t changed.

456. Knowledge is subject to rust and decay, but truth is golden.

457. Seek knowledge to wander, but truth to wonder at God’s great glory.

458. Worldly knowledge fills our brain, but godly understanding fulfils our life.

459. All the knowledge in the world will be of no worth on the Day of Judgement.

460. Knowledge puffs up, truth humbles.

461. I desire knowledge, but desire God's truth even more.

462. Knowledge so easily kills the Spirit in us. But Spirit inspired knowledge changes the world.

463. Satan uses knowledge to kill the Spirit within. Now God is using Spirit inspired knowledge to return the favour.

257. THEY WON'T LEAVE
The year was 1492 A.D., and the citizens of Rome wanted to expel the Jews. The Pope, being somewhat more openminded than his followers, decided to give the Jews a chance to be heard on this question, and challenged them to a public debate. The elders of the Jewish community considered the matter carefully.

"We have many learned and erudite men among us," they reasoned, "but the Pope is also learned and erudite. By learning and erudition alone, we may not prevail. Perhaps we may prevail by common sense." So they chose the most commonsense man among them, a crusty old fellow named Moishe, to represent them. Moishe agreed, but on one condition: The debate must be held in silence, without words.

Surprisingly, the Pope agreed. On the appointed day, the Pope and Moishe took the stage and seated themselves before the crowd.

The Pope held up three fingers.
Moishe held up one finger.

The Pope pointed with his three fingers to the four horizons: East, South, West, and North.
Moishe pointed with his one finger to the ground at their feet.

After some moments, the Pope held up the elements of the Eucharist -- the wine and the wafer.
Moishe immediately held up an apple.

Suddenly, the Pope stood up and declared, "The debate is concluded. The Jews have won. The Jews can stay."

Some days later, a cardinal finally got up the nerve to ask the Pope, "Your Holiness, just what exactly did you and Moishe say to each other?"

"First," began the Pope, "I held up three fingers to symbolize the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Then Moishe held up one finger to represent the essential Unity of God. Okay, so he got me on the first round.

"Next, I pointed to all the horizons to indicate that God is all around us. But Moishe pointed to the ground between us to indicate that God is right here with us. Okay, he got me again.

"Finally, I held up the Eucharist to indicate the redemption of humankind through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. But Moishe held up the apple to indicate the original sin of Adam and Eve that made that sacrifice necessary. I realized that he was right - that we are all one in Adam, and announced the Jews' victory."

Not long after that, one of the rabbis asked Moishe the same question.

"The Pope," said Moishe, "held up three fingers to say, 'The Jews must leave Rome in three days.' I held up one finger to say, 'Not one Jew will leave.' Then the Pope pointed to the horizons to say, 'The Jews must disperse into the wide world.' I pointed to the ground between us to say, 'We are staying right here!' Then," Moishe shrugged, "he held up his lunch, I held up mine, and it was all over."

256. WHERE'S JESUS?
A Sunday School teacher of preschoolers was concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus Christ because of the Christmas season emphasis on His birth. He wanted to make sure they understood that the birth of Jesus occurred for real. He asked his class, "Where is Jesus today?"

Steven raised his hand and said, "He's in heaven."

Mary was called on and answered, "He's in my heart."

Sammy, waving his hand furiously, blurted out, "I know, I know! He's in our bathroom!!!"

The whole class got very quiet, looked at the teacher, and waited for a response. The teacher was completely at a loss for a few very long seconds. Finally, he gathered his wits and asked Sammy how he knew this. Sammy said, "Well...every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door, and yells, "Good Lord, are you still in there?!"

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is an egg tooth?

ANSWER: Many snakes and other reptiles have an ‘egg tooth’ on their snouts to help them break out of their leathery shells. The tooth slits through the shell when it's time for them to hatch, then falls off shortly after hatching. (An ‘eggcellent’ idea!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where are all the baby pigeons?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

474. FALSE PRETENSES?
The British flag is correctly known as the Union Flag. It should only be called the Union Jack when flown from the jack mast of a ship. (Sounds like a 'jack-up' to me!)

475. FOR HOW LONG?
The world consumes 1 billion gallons (4.5 billion litres) of petroleum a day. (As the earth lightens from massive mining, will it fly away one day?)

476. MILKED!
A glass of milk contains about the same weight of air as the weight of an aspirin tablet. (Even cows have caught on to making less seem like more!)

AN AFRICAN EXPERIENCE

Unusually for me, I ministered at this conference with some others, rather than by myself. It was certainly easier for me! Of course, it brings its challenges too, when all may not necessarily be on the same page. An interesting experience.

While I could write pages, I simply want to share a few things that were relevant to me.

The conference started on the Friday. I spoke then, more of an introduction than anything else.

On the Saturday though, things started to get more interesting. Another speaker, Emma, a Ugandan who was a missionary in the DRC (Congo) rode from our accommodation to the conference location on a bicycle. Amazingly, on the way, he ran into a man, who was knocked over and broke his shoulder. This is unbelievable really, as Emma was not a racing cyclist, just cruising along! In Africa, when such things happen, you know you are upsetting the devil.

I spoke on the progression through the Tabernacle of Moses as it applies to our individual lives. The Holy Spirit got me to present this in a different way to normal and the people were impacted by the Spirit. Excellent! Thank you Lord.

On the Sunday the Lord had not given me anything to speak about. My mind was empty - which some would say is normal for me! LOL! I stood up in front of the people not knowing what to do. This could be embarrassing! "Let's lift up our hands to the Lord", was all I could say! We lifted our hands to the Lord and the Holy Spirit came down in power, ministering personally to the people individually, so that I did not have to say anything! Wonderful! You are an amazing and Faithful Lord! After 3-4 of an hour, when I was wondering how to finish, when I got a note to say that the next speaker was due! So I just passed the meeting over and the Holy Spirit completed his work, allowing the next speaker to commence.

The devil does not like this! On our way back to our accommodation, our young driver crashed head on into a motor cyclist injuring the driver, but not the pillion passenger!

In Africa, the spirits, both Holy and evil, are more active than in the West. When you have more Holy Spirit, so you also have greater evil spirits, for there is a always a balance between the two.

Meeting Emma was another blessing, as I hope to minister with him again in the Congo one day.

My final African experience.

Then off to Britain to spend with our 2 sons, partners and grandchildren, along with my wife Kathy, who met me in London. Great catching up, not having seen my British family for 3 1/2 years. How the grandchildren grow!

TIL DEATH DO US PART

4. GOODBYE MOTHER!
A couple were going out for the evening. After getting ready, they put the cat out on their way out of the house to get in the taxi.

The cat, however, had a different idea and scampered back inside before they could get out. They don't want the cat shut in the house, so the wife went on out to the taxi while the husband went back in to chase the cat out. The wife, not wanting it known that the house will be empty, explained to the taxi driver "My husband will be here in just a moment. He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother."

A few minutes later, the husband got into the cab. "Sorry I took so long" he explained, "Stupid old thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out!"

5. WHOSE KID?
Late one Saturday evening, I was awakened by the ringing of my phone. In a sleepy, grumpy voice I said hello. The party on the other end of the line paused for a moment before rushing breathlessly into a lengthy speech.

"Mum, this is Susan and I'm sorry I woke you up, but I had to call because I'm going to be a little late getting home. See, Dad's car has a flat but it's not my fault. Honest! I don't know what happened. The tire just went flat while we were inside the theater. Please don't be mad, okay?"

Since I don't have any daughters, I knew the person had dialed my number by mistake. "I'm sorry dear," I replied, "but you've reached the wrong number. I don't have a daughter named Susan."

"Wow, Mum," the young woman's voice replied, "I didn't think you'd be this mad."

6. MY HEARINGS FINE!
A man goes to his doctor and says "I don't think my wife's hearing is as good as it used to be, what should I do?"

The doctor replies: "Try this test to find out for sure. When your wife is in the kitchen doing dishes, stand fifteen feet behind her and ask her a question, if she doesn't respond keep moving closer asking the question until she hears you."

The man goes home and sees his wife preparing dinner. He stands fifteen feet behind her and says "What's for dinner, honey?" No response. He moves to ten feet behind her and asks again, no response. Five feet, no answer. Finally he stands directly behind her and says, "Honey, what's for supper?"

She says, "For the fourth time, I SAID CHICKEN!"

NON-STOP PRAYER MOVEMENT GRIPS ATHEIST CHINA

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, thousands of Christians are meeting in a corner of northeast China for an unprecedented prayer movement. What started as a small gathering six years ago has become a nationwide prayer initiative uniting hundreds of Chinese churches. For years, the Chinese government tried to snuff out Christianity. In the late 1940s, some 500,000 Chinese Christians were killed because of their faith. Now decades later in what is officially still an atheist nation, Christianity is the fastest growing religion. "We had a dream that someday we would build a church focused on prayer for China and the world," prayer leader Ha Bining said. Ha Bining and her husband Feng Kai are witnesses to this profound move of God across China.

In 2000, the Christian couple had a dream to turn this piece of land in a corner of northeast China into a place of prayer. "My tears fell like the rain and I started praying," Bining said. "God gave us a vision to help bring churches across China together for 24-hour non-stop prayer for our country and the world." Nine years later, with construction on the property almost complete, the couple sent out email and text messages to friends and pastors inviting them for a prayer meeting. "We didn't know who would show up or how many. I was praying that at least people from seven churches would show up. To my absolute amazement 70 churches joined us that day," Bining said.

One believer prayed. "The glory of this present house will be greater than the former house. May this place be a new lamp that lights up China and the world." "We were overwhelmed at the response," Binning said. "It was totally beyond our expectations." The prayer centre started in June 2009. Since then, 617 churches from across China have signed up to pray 24 hours a day. Bining said they have three main objectives. "First, that this will be a place where people can make peace with each other. Second, that God will use this place for churches to repent and reconcile with each other. And third, that this will be a place where people can make peace with God," she said. Christians from more than 100 countries have also visited the prayer centre.

"Every day we receive guests from around the world. It's so exciting to see people pray," Jian Yanchang, a 24/7 prayer intercessor, said. These intercessors know God is doing something special in China. And they are praying that way. "Lord, the number of Christians in China is increasing. What should we do Lord? What's our job? How should we expand your Kingdom to gather more people? Lord, we pray that you will place your mission into each of our hearts," one pastor said. When the Communists took power in the 1940s there were roughly 4 million Christians in China. Today, well over 100 million are followers of Jesus Christ. And if current growth rates remain, experts say in less than two decades, China will become the world's most populous Christian nation.

In return, Feng Kai said God will use China to be a blessing to the nations. "I believe our life as Christians should be a blessing to others. God told Abraham, 'I will bless you. I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.' God blessed Abraham; he is blessing the Chinese church," Kai said. Kai and others believe prayer initiatives like this have been key to church growth in China. "Twenty-four hour non-stop praying is not an easy task to accomplish, but it is a happy thing for us to do, to enjoy 24-hours of God's presence in prayer," Dong Lili, another prayer intercessor, said. "We are in need of prayers," Elder Wang, a regular attendee at the 24/7 prayer centre, admitted. "Through prayers our heart is broadened; we learn to care for others and for the world. As time goes by, prayers inspire us to love each other."

In 2011, a new seminary and Christian college were established on the grounds of the prayer centre to train the next generation of pastors and business leaders to change China for Jesus Christ. "I will follow Lord Jesus my whole life for you are my Lord. I will carry my cross my whole life. Since the moment I met you, worldly pleasures became flavourless to me. I will follow Lord Jesus my whole life for you are my Lord. I will carry my cross my whole life," they sing. For Ha Bining and her husband Feng Kai, this place is a God-given dream come true to unite churches in China and help bring news of Christ's love to the ends of the earth. "This is the core of Christianity," Bining said. "We are all on our knees, lifting our hands and praying that the Gospel will continue to spread around the world and also here in China."

TRANSITION FROM ‘THE CHURCH’ TO ‘THE KINGDOM’ -

The more I grow in Jesus, the more I study history, and the more revelation the Lord gives me, the more I see differences between where we are as 'the church' and where we should be as integral members of 'the kingdom' of God.

Surely the two are the same? Yes, they are meant to be. But the reality is that they are not. For over the 2000 odd years since Jesus, the church has become an 'institution', with a life of its own, rather than being an 'instrument' to build God's kingdom.

Please don't get me wrong! The church does many good things. It has spread the Good News of Jesus around most of the earth. It is the leading supplier of social services worldwide. It has influenced society and history over the last 2000 years more than any other institution. One third of the world's population is Christian, or nominally so. Considerable milestones have been achieved.

Yet, is the church today truly ushering in the kingdom of God? Do we really mean, or believe it, when we pray.....

10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

Sadly, the reality is, in much of the church, God's kingdom has become man's kingdom, where the protection and promotion of the individual church, denomination or grouping, has become more important in men's minds than building the kingdom of God. We have moved from a single church kingdom in the 1st century to over 30,000 church kingdoms now! .........

WAXING LYRICAL

What will the new year bring?

2009

Running out of time,
Another year's over,
A lemon or a lime?
It's over Rover!

Can't change the past,
Memories will last.
Of good things done,
Others, not begun.

2009's nearly here
Let us be of good cheer,
And not turn the recession,
Into personal depression.

Money may well be tight,
But there's still light,
Jesus is ever on the throne,
No matter how much we groan.

Come into His presence,
Experience the essence,
Of His grace and glory,
In the heavenly story.

"Rest in my goodness,
With thankfulness,
For I am the Lord,
Me you can afford.

I am always here for you,
Will ever see you through,
You're in the palm of my hand,
With me, forever you'll stand.

Come now and rest in me,
One plus one is three,
My love for you is always free,
Accept it, then you will see.

One day the world will end,
Eternity with me to spend,
But now, come build my kingdom here on earth,
You're my precious pearl, beyond all worth."

A DAVID MUSING

I do not like to get involved in political controversy, but feel the need to this week, with the shooting in San Bernardino County, California, USA, plus the almost unreported shooting of another 4 people on the same day in Savannah, Georgia, killing 1 and injuring 3.

I have personally seen the obsession with guns first hand in your beautiful country. Guns do not protect you, for those who use them against you will undoubtedly be more skilled in their use than you are.

Because of guns ready availability the suicide figures by gunshot are twice as many as the murders. So, over 10 people per 100,000 are killed by guns each year while in other Western countries it is only a fraction of this.

It saddens me to see conservative Christians, who genuinely love Jesus, acting in a way that is so unlike the ways of the Lord they follow.

While in Africa, where the threat of terrorism is much greater, I experienced armed security guards with metal detectors situated outside all major buildings, shops and yes, even churches. Yet terrorists still strike. Guns do not protect you. To the contrary, the proliferation of guns without adequate control, creates more, rather than less murders, suicides and yes, terrorism incidents. It is not about Obama, Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, as you have made it to be. It is about needless waste of human lives.

Surely America, unfettered protection of 2nd Amendment rights comes at too great a cost?

PS: Please don't shoot me for expressing an opinion on this matter.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

David Tait

ABOUT US

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
