CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?

It is easy to criticize the church and its religious ways, but the real question is 'what do we do about it?' That is the challenge that we as God's disciples face today. Over these 12 weeks we are looking at practical ways God is calling His church, you and me, and the body corporate, to change today. These are taken from my publication A REVELATION OF……. GOD'S CALL TO HIS CHURCH, published 10 years ago. I do not pretend that the changes are easy, but they are necessary for God's kingdom to be established on the earth in preparation for the return of Jesus. Let's continue.....

1: FROM MARTHA TO MARY
2: FROM GREEK TO HEBREW

3: FROM REVIVAL TO HABITATION
Over the centuries since the Reformation, there have been thousands of Revivals. They have had many similarities and lots of differences, but all have one feature in common - each and every one has come to an end! Why is this?

Some would say that the intensity is so great that we cannot cope with revival for more than a certain time. Or that the Holy Spirit does His work and leaves. But the key reason, seemingly common to all, is that revivals die when the people involved start to organise them, instituting systems to organise their behaviour. For once leaders gain an understanding of how the Spirit moves in their situation, through experience, they expect Him to continue that way, formalising, yes, institutionalising 'the method', to help the Holy Spirit out!

This is a natural human trait. Even the great man Moses, fell into this trap when he hit the rock to obtain water, for that method had worked for him previously. This time though, he was instructed to speak to the rock. His human based reaction, even though triggered by a time of great stress in dealing with a difficult people, so disappointed God that Moses was prevented from entering the Promised Land.....

Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. The LORD said to Moses, “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” 9 So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD and where he showed himself holy among them. (Numbers 20:6-13)

As well, people soon focus on the 'experience' of the supernatural rather than the repentance and life change that is at the heart of the Holy Spirit's desire for each one of us during revival. They will travel large distances for a 'touch from the Lord' rather than being listening to the Lord seeking the changes He desires to make in their lives. Revivals start with repentance, but fizzle out when people look more to the manifestations than to the giver.....

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” (Matthew 4:17)

One minister I know travelled many thousands of kilometres to Toronto where he had a great time experientially. While there, the Lord ministered to Him very clearly about his treatment of his wife. Coming back home, he testified of what the Lord had said. Those who knew him understood the accuracy of the Lord's word, yet nothing changed in 'life with the wife'! Since that time his ministry has reduced considerably. You may be the judge as to why?

Our God is seeking more. He is seeking a people who will listen to Him! Those prepared to make changes in their lives as and when He requires. Ones who will be obedient to His will. Those willing to repent of old ways and to change their behaviour to become more like Jesus, no matter the cost. Those prepared to overcome pride, to move out of the comfort zone of learned behaviour.

Peter said to him, “We have left everything to follow you!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:28-31)

Ironically, I have been challenged in the week of writing this, in an area of my life. Let me assure you, it isn't easy to change! Particularly when it is a behaviour you have grown up with from your youth, one which is a part of you and who you are. But change is essential if we are to grow into the character of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit earnestly desires to be of influence in our lives, to teach us, guide us, to help us change, on an ongoing basis, yesterday, today and forever! While we can't influence yesterday's behaviour, other than repenting of our actions, today is a new day. The question the Holy Spirit gently asks each one is whether we will let Him 'inhabit' our lives. Are we prepared to give ourselves fully and completely to our Lord, doing His will for us, today and forever? Living in permanent personal revival each and every day, establishing His spiritual kingdom within, preparing for the glorious day when He returns to establish His physical kingdom in which to rule and reign with His overcoming disciples for 1000 years. I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.....

And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. (Revelation 20:4-6)

PRINCIPLE 3: God is calling out to Himself today a people prepared to allow the Holy Spirit to inhabit and change their lives on an ongoing basis.

DAVID'S DOUBTS: "But Lord, it is so much easier to stay as I am! I am comfortable with me!" "But David, are you like me then?" "Ah, well Lord...... no! Okay Lord, I take the hint!"

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Ten Lepers Healed (Luke 17:11-19)
But only one, a Samaritan, gave thanks.

“Go and show yourselves to the priests.”

The Samaritan returned.

“Where are the other nine? Didn’t anyone else come back to praise God—only this foreigner?”
“Get up and go on your way. Your trust has healed you.”

The Coming of the Kingdom (Luke 17:20-37)
Answering the Pharisees.

“God’s kingdom doesn’t come with visible signs that you can observe. People won’t be saying, ‘Look, it’s here’ or ‘Look, it’s there,’ for God’s kingdom is within you.”

Teaching the disciples.

“The time is coming when you’ll long to see the day when the Son of man comes, but you won’t see it. They’ll be telling you, “Look, there he is,’ or ‘look, here he is,’ but don’t go running off after them. The day when the Son of man comes will be just like lightning that flashes, lighting up the sky from one side to the other. But first he will have to suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation. The time when the Son of man comes will be like it was in Noah’s day. People went on eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage until the day Noah went into the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. It will be like it was in Lot’s day. People went on eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
“The day the Son of man appears will be just like that. If you’re up on the roof that day don’t go down and get your things; and if you’re out in the fields don’t go back home either. Remember Lot’s wife! If you try to hold on to your life you’ll lose it; but if you lose your life you’ll save it. I tell you, at that time two will be in bed at night; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain, one will be taken; and the other left.”

Taken where?

“Where the carcass is, that’s where the vultures gather,”

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

278. THE DOG WHO COULD WALK ON WATER
Fred took his newfound friend John duck-hunting one day. Soon a shot found it's mark and a duck plummeted to the lake. Fred whistled for his dog and the dog padded across the top of the water, retrieved the duck and trotted back on top of the water to drop the duck at his master's feet. His friend John was amazed and immediately asked him "Can I buy that dog?".

Fred said "Sure, I've got another one like him anyways".

John couldn't wait to show off his new dog to his friend Wilbur and finally the day came when they were duck-hunting that John had to send the dog across the water to get the fallen duck. As the dog trotted back John waited for Wilbur's look of amazement but instead Wilbur scowled. Finally John blurted out " Well Wilbur, what do you think of my dog?" Wilbur scowled again and mumbled "hmmm, can't swim, can he!"

277. WHEN IS THE RESURRECTION?
A very zealous soul-winning young preacher recently came upon a farmer working in his field. Being concerned about the farmer's soul the preacher asked the man, "Are you laboring in the vineyard of the Lord my good man?"

Not even looking at the preacher and continuing his work the farmer replied, "Naw, these are soybeans."

"You don't understand," said the preacher. "Are you a Christian?"

With the same amount of interest as his previous answer the farmer said, "Nope my name is Jones. You must be lookin for Jim Christian. He lives a mile south of here."

The young determined preacher tried again asking the farmer, "Are you lost?"

"Naw! I've lived here all my life," answered the farmer.

"Are you prepared for the resurrection?" the frustrated preacher asked.

This caught the farmer's attention and he asked, "When's it gonna be?"

Thinking he had accomplished something the young preacher replied, "It could be today, tomorrow, or the next day."

Taking a handkerchief from his back pocket and wiping his brow, the farmer remarked, "Well, don't mention it to my wife. She don't get out much and she'll wanna go all three days."

276. THE HEREAFTER
A minister told an elderly neighbor that at his age he should be giving some thought to what he called "the hereafter." the neighbor told the pastor that he thinks about it many times a day.

"That's very wise," the minister said.

The neighbor explained that it's not a matter of wisdom. And then he added, "It's when I open a drawer or a closet and ask myself, 'What am I here after?'"

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Why do some animals have eyes that glow in the dark?

ANSWER: Taking a flashlight outside at night to look for your cat, you might have been greeted with the eerie glow of two eyes that appear to be floating free of the cat. What makes cat eyes, and those of some other animals, glow in the dark? Many nocturnal animals (those that hunt at night) have a mirror like layer called the ‘tapetum’ behind the cells of the retina. This reflective surface helps the animal to gather more light so that it can clearly see, even in very low levels of illumination. Animals that have this ability include rabbits, deer, cats, racoons, wolves, and even bullfrogs. Animals' eyes glow different colours, too, depending on the type of animal and the pigment in the animal's photoreceptors. Some shine red or green, while others are yellow, gold or white. (Glow worms too.)

"""OTHER'S SAYINGS TO ENLIGHTEN, AMUSE, OR BEMUSE"""

Some interesting thoughts . . .

If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he's an erudite scientist who once said:

"I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."

His mind sees things differently than most of us do. Here are some of his gems.....

1 - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.

3 - Half the people you know are below average.

4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

"You have had two wishes already," the genie said, "but your second wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes. You now have one wish left."

"Okay," said the man, "I don't believe this, but what the heck. I've always wanted to understand women. I'd love to know what's going on inside their heads."

"Funny," said the genie as it granted his wish and disappeared forever, "That was your first wish, too!"

From a Seed Born in Jesus' Day: A

by Megan E. Turner : Jan 26, 2016 : JNS News

"It has become a major attraction here." -David Lehrer

(Israel)—Methuselah is considered to have been the oldest living man in the Hebrew Bible, reaching the esteemed age of 969. It is only appropriate, then, that a date palm that sprouted from a 2,000-year-old seed at southern Israel's Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) carries the same name. (Photo credit: Courtesy JNF)

Dr. Elaine Solowey, director of the Center for Sustainable Agriculture at AIES and an expert in crops appropriate for arid lands, was very skeptical about the possibility of taking ancient seeds and producing something viable from them. With only six seeds, recovered by the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center of the Hadassah Medical Organization from excavations at the Masada fortification in the 1960s, she set out to cultivate a Judean date palm. While native to Israel and the area surrounding it, the Judean date palm is a species that had not been seen there for more than a millennium.

Seven years ago, a male date palm sprouted from one of those ancient seeds, leaving many in awe of what was thought to be a botanically impossible feat.

"It has become a major attraction here at the institute," AIES Executive Director David Lehrer said regarding the now-mature Methuselah at its home on Kibbutz Ketura. Lehrer explained that AIES's dream is to reintroduce the Judean date palm to the State of Israel as a valuable crop and for its unique medicinal properties.

This initiative and other AIES agricultural projects are made possible by the institute's partnership with Jewish National Fund (JNF). Together, JNF and AIES are turning the world's attention to the knowledge and research coming out of the Negev desert, with a focus on the fields of hyper-arid nature conservation and water management.

Methuselah is actually part of a larger project organized by Solowey, and with this success she plans to create a center for the study of ancient, extinct, and endangered seeds. "We want to make sure that endangered plant species don't disappear from Israel's landscape," said Lehrer. (Photo via Holy Land Photos)

"We are looking for good uses for native plants which are under threat," he added, emphasizing the plants' medicinal qualities.

It is fitting to highlight Methuselah's rebirth in light of the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shvat, Israel's New Year of the trees, which was celebrated Jan. 24. Beyond the fact that dates are one of the "seven species" that are customarily consumed on this holiday, the story of the modern-day Methuselah provides an opportunity to reconnect with nature in a thoughtful and creative way.

"In some ways, nature is under threat," Lehrer said. "It's important that human beings remember that our role in this world is to continue to nurture nature and to 'take care of the garden.' The Bible tells us that if we ruin it, there won't be anyone to come after us and fix it."

A REVELATION OF……. GIVING TO GOD

In Christianity, we hear an awful lot about what God has done for us, but much less of what He desires from us in return!

There is a saying that 'salvation is a free gift, but discipleship costs us everything!' For as Jesus sacrificed His life for us on Calvary's grim hill, so we, in turn, are to model Him, and sacrifice our life for God and for others.

In this study we are going to look at the ways in which we are to offer God the sacrifices He so much desires from us - Praise and Worship, Prayer and Fasting and Tithes and Gifts.

My God sacrificed His son Jesus, for me! Surely, the first thing I can do for Him is to offer back the sacrifices He desires of me. Is that too much to ask?

In theory we would probably agree, but the practice of our lives often tends to fall short of our good intentions!

I trust that this study will encourage you, as it has me, to give back to God what He desires of each one of us.

WAXING LYRICAL

This poem arose out of the unexpected, untimely death of a very good friend's daughter. Why God, why!

But still, life continues on for us who are left, until our turn comes to meet our maker.

GONE!

Life's short.
Death's caught.
Comes to all.
Small and tall.

It's good to grieve one who did leave,
But life goes on, loved one gone.
How can we cope - sit round and mope?
From dust to dust, in God we trust.

He seems far away,
As we try to pray!
"Where are you now Lord!
You've broken the cord!"

"I am still here for you, my child,
Know that, with Me, you're wild.
But death, it will ever be,
Until earth, is sin free.

Look up, look up, my son,
Into my arms, do now run,
I am always here for you,
Believe it - it is true.

I so understand your sorrow,
As in My path you do follow.
Gave my Son to die for you,
Grief was in My heart, too.

My ways are different to yours,
Yes, mine is a greater cause.
But with death comes eternal life,
No more worry, no more strife...
When your life you do put in my hand,
With me, for eternity, will you stand.

In Jesus now, you must surely rest,
It's through Him, you pass the test.

Come, my friend, rest in my embrace,
Yes, I am with you, in life's race.
One day too, you will reach the finishing line,
I'll meet you there - your hand clasped in mine."

A DAVID MUSING

Yesterday afternoon Kathy and I were going to a '1 day cricket match' between New Zealand and Pakistan, the only international match to be played in our city of Napier this season.

This shortened form of the magnificent game would have taken ONLY 7 hours, which is short for a cricket match! (Americans - I know you think we are mad!).

However on Wednesday and Thursday morning the heavens opened and we got inundated with rain, nearly 1/12 times that we normally get for the whole of January!

Were we being 'saved' by Holy Spirit rain, or 'cursed' with flooding? Only God knows! LOL!

Actually, we can do very little about the weather, in my experience. When it is fine (most of the time here) it is fine, and when it rains it rains!

A lot like life really, there are may things we cannot control. We have to learn to cope with them, not getting unnecessarily upset, while concentrating on these things that, with God's help, we can change.

Missing the cricket was a disappointment, but life goes on and today the sun is out. Always next year!

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
