WHO WILL DARE TO BE A DISCIPLE? (Part 10)

DISCIPLESHIP AND THE CHURCH

Unfortunately, discipleship is not high on the list of priorities for the teaching (and application) of most churches.

Church Teaching

Of course , there are many, many churches in the world preaching and teaching about many things. Some of the main themes include.....

1. SALVATION: The necessity to be be 'born again' - and most likely, to join the church.

2. EVILS OF SIN: Sin is emphasized continuously - making people feel consistently unworthy.

3. LOVE: Hate the sin, love the sinner - often becomes love the sinner, accept the sin.

4. WORKS: An emphasis on good works - leading to salvation can be earned through good works.

5. SUBMISSION: A teaching of submission - usually to the pastor or the church

6. SOCIETY: Fitting in with society to attract people - become little different to society.

7. DISCIPLESHIP: Delegated to small groups - often teaching obedience to the church.

Kingdom Discipleship

Kingdom discipleship is not based upon learning, for all the learning in the world will not make you a disciple - other than perhaps in your own mind!

True discipleship is based upon RELATIONSHIP and LOVE. Relationship and love with GOD plus relationship and love with OTHERS, both other disciples and those in the world....

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39)

Kingdom discipleship comes REVELATION put into ACTION, not from just learning about it.

You can read this series of editorials on discipleship and learn from it, but unless you the Lord reveals it to your spirit and leads you into a life of DEDICATION and OBEDIENCE to His will.....

Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. (Luke 9:23-4)

Plus.....

And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:27)

I could quote many more Scriptures of a similar ilk, but Jesus sums it up succinctly.....

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. (John 14:23-4)

In essence, in our relationship with the Father, LOVE means OBEY!

And how do we hear God in order to obey Him? The explanation continues.....

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:25-6)

Developing discipleship in our lives generally consists of meeting with other disciples, to share with, to encourage, to guide, to correct. This is quite different from a church meeting or home groups etc., where the emphasis is on 'telling you how to do it', to small, intimate relationships, with ones you can fully trust to participate in your life. Be comforted by Jesus.....

20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

At the heart of the disciple is the God given desire to share God's love with others. Of course, the Great Commission which we have looked previously, is a command of Jesus. But there are other verses too which describe the disciples desire to share God's love with others. Talking to His disciples, Jesus gave an instruction that still applies to His kingdom disciples today.....

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. (Mark 16:15)

and even from the Old Testament too.....

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. (Psalm 96:3)

Finally, Kingdom disciples will bring about the return of Jesus, as we mentioned last week, through their desire to spread the gospel of the kingdom.....

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:15)

Amen.

Come Jesus, come.

PS: We now know how to bring about His return, don't we!

Will you dare to be a disciple? I will.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Jesus Clearing the Temple (John 2:12-25)
Overturning the tables and driving people out with a whip. Talking to the dove sellers.

“Take these things out of here! Don’t turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Then when His authority was questioned by the leaders and a miracle asked for.

“Destroy this Temple, and in three days I’ll raise it up!”

Jesus Meets Nicodemus at Night (John 3:1-21)
The Jewish teacher.

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “Unless you are reborn, you can’t experience God’s kingdom.”

Nicodemus asked how?

“I tell you the truth, you can’t enter God’s kingdom unless you are born of water and the Spirit,” “What’s born of the flesh is flesh, and what’s born of the Spirit is Spirit. Don’t be surprised at my telling you, ‘You must be reborn.’ The wind blows wherever it wants, and just as you hear the sound it makes, but know where it’s coming from or where it’s going, that’s how it is for everyone who is born of the spirit.”
“You’re a famous teacher in Israel, and yet you don’t understand such things?” “I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know and give evidence regarding what we have seen, but you refuse to accept our testimony. If you don’t trust what I say when I tell you about earthly things, how would you ever trust what I say if I were to tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven, but the Son of man came down from heaven. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that everyone who trusts in him will have eternal life.
“For God loved the world, and this is how: he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who trusts in him shouldn’t die, but have eternal life. God didn’t send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Those who trust in him are not condemned, while those who don’t trust in him are condemned already because they didn’t trust in the one and only Son of God. This is how the decision is made: the light came to the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their actions were evil. All those who do evil hate the light and don’t come into the light, because they don’t want their actions to be exposed. But those who do good come into the light, so that what God accomplishes in them can be revealed.”

Jesus Begins to Preach in Capernaum (Matthew 4:12-17, Mark 1:14-15)
Giving the message of salvation after the arrest of John the Baptist.

“The time predicted has come,” “God’s kingdom is near. Repent and believe in the good news.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK

WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES

When asking the Lord what He wanted me to write about next, He has led me to look at HIS CHURCH, not in the way of standard church history, but from His viewpoint. I will try my best to be obedient to His wishes. But any errors will be mine!

As you will soon see, the history of His church revolves around the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit's activity upon the earth, rather than what we consider the church to be.

We look also at the future church, the kingdom church for whom Jesus is returning.
I trust it will both inform and challenge you about our future, both as individuals and the church as a whole.

375. THE MICROSCHLOCK BIBLE
(A parody. Adapted by Bellgamin)
Customer: Oh salesclerk, could you help me please?

Clerk: Hi, my name is Velma and I'll be your Support. What's your problem?

Customer: The book of Psalms is missing from this Bible I bought here yesterday.

Clerk: Try looking again. Maybe Psalms will be there this time.

Customer: No, it's still missing.

Clerk: Maybe it's the way you're using the Bible. Try opening it from the back instead of the front.

Customer: Even when I open it from the back, Psalms is still missing.

Clerk: Maybe the Bible is incompatible with your eyeglasses. Did you wear READING glasses while you used this Bible?

Customer: I don't need glasses. My eyesight is perfect.

Clerk: Hmmm...if you say so. Well, it might be a configuration problem. How was the Bible set up?

Customer: They just handed it to me in a cardboard box. What has that got to do with the fact that Psalms is missing?

Clerk: Can you remember everything you did before you noticed the book of Psalms was missing?

Customer: I took it out of the box, of course!

Clerk: Oh oh! That could be the cause of your problem. Anyway, that Bible is rather out-dated technology. Have you considered upgrading to our most recent version?

Customer: You folks have updated the Bible?

Clerk: Certainly. We just issued Bible-98, version 2.1. It comes with 100 free hours on the internet, plus one full year of Tech Support.

Customer: Okay, bring me Bible-98. I'm running late now.

Clerk: Here you are sir. Bible-98, the latest thing.

Clerk starts to leave.

Customer: (Examines Bible) Hey, wait a minute! What are all these extra pages glued in between the Bible pages? I didn't ask for those.

Clerk: No problem sir. They can be removed for a slight extra cost. Of course, doing so will void the warranty and your Bible might not function properly without them.

(And so it goes. Er..... did anybody say McWindoze?)

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: In terms of chemical composition, what substance does human blood most closely resemble?

ANSWER: The substance chemically closest to blood is seawater. In fact, the saline solution which is used in intravenous injections, ‘normal saline’, is 0.9% salt to water, the same salinity as seawater. It's also the salinity of amniotic fluid, the liquid that surrounded all of us in utero, before we were born. Of course, seawater contains lots of other ‘trace minerals’, which are mostly also present in blood. Yes, human plasma closely resembles seawater. (So sailors really do have the blood of the sea coursing through their veins?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Which Roman emperor succumbed to smallpox?

SOME FUN FACTS

348. SETTING A TREND
A & P was the first chain-store business to be established. It began in 1842. (There has since been a chain reaction.)

349. BATHING BANNED
In 1845 Boston, America, had an ordinance banning bathing unless you had a doctor's prescription. (Would eventually have become a good money earner for doctors.)

350. BRAND NEW
Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages (sticking plasters) first appeared on the market in 1921. However, the little red string now used to open the package was not added until 1940. (How much blood has Band-Aids saved?)

GREAT GROANERS

180. ARRESTED AND CHARGED
A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of seagulls. One day his supply of the birds ran out, so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road. Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with transporting gulls across sedate lions for immortal porpoises.

181. FRIENDS?
A sceptical anthropologist was cataloguing South American folk remedies with the assistance of a tribal brujo who indicated that the leaves of a particular fern were a sure cure for any case of constipation. When the anthropologist expressed his doubts, the brujo looked him in the eye and said, "Let me tell you, with fronds like these, who needs enemas?"

182. TWO TATES
Back in the 1800s the Tates Watch Company of Massachusetts wanted to produce other products and, since they already made the cases for pocket watches, decided to market compasses for the pioneers travelling west. It turned out that although their watches were of finest quality, their compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California. This, of course, is the origin of the expression, "He who has a Tates is lost!"

183. LOST!
A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the Bathroom fixtures. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "We have absolutely nothing to go on."

184. NO CURE
An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip Of elk hide and gave it to the chief, instructing him to bite off, chew and swallow one inch of the leather every day.

After a month, the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said,² The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."

185. MISSING
A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to The local civic official who apologised profusely saying, "I must have taken Leif off my census."

186. MATHEMATICAL
There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deer skin, one slept On an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

187. BY THE WAY.......
By the way, I know the guy who wrote these 9 puns. He entered them And one other in a contest. He figured with 10 entries he couldn't lose. As they were reading the list of winners he was really hoping one of his puns would win, but unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

Why Don’t Small Churches Grow? (Actually, They Do)

The presumption that small churches don’t grow is false. Some grow numerically. Most grow spiritually. Many grow in both ways.

by Karl Vaters

When you run a website, as I do with NewSmallChurch.com, you get to see the search terms people use to find it.

That question is one that pops up all the time. So today I’m going to take a stab at answering it. But before I offer my answer, I’m going to challenge the premise of the question: The presumption that small churches don’t grow is false.

Small churches do grow. Some grow numerically. Most grow spiritually. Many grow in both ways.

It’s just that when they grow numerically, we don’t call them small churches any more. We call them medium, big or megachurches.

Where do we think all the big churches came from? Those frogs started out as tadpoles. Asking why small churches aren’t growing is kind of like asking “why aren’t there any big small churches?”

Small Churches Grow Spiritually – They Grow Disciples and Other Churches

Just because a church doesn’t have more butts in the seats than it had last year, doesn’t mean it isn’t contributing to the growth of the kingdom of God, to the spiritual growth of its members, or reaching its community.

Supporting small churches is one of the best ways to reach the world for Jesus.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but supporting small churches is one of the best ways to reach the world for Jesus.

As I wrote in, The Best Way to Promote Church Growth? Support Small Churches, small churches lead more people to Jesus, disciple more believers and plant more churches per capita than our big church counterparts.

Big churches do great things, too. But small churches grow disciples and plant other churches really well.

WAXING LYRICAL

Back to the family! Mine wasn’t – and isn’t – perfect. But perhaps it is a lot better
than it seems when we are young! The frequent Father/Son conundrum! Now 21 years since he died. How time flies!

GOD IS GOOD!

My Dad was a highly successful man
A Knight of the Realm was he.
His hand would be raised, "Yes, I can"
While others preferred to flee.

Loved three short words, which got on my goat!
‘God is good’ he would always say.
For a job well done - even when sick on a boat!
These three little words came into play.

Most of his life was filled with success,
As Mayor of Napier the city grew strong.
Excelled in his dealings with the press,
‘God is good’, forever his theme song.

Now I found these words so very frustrating,
Why ‘God is good’? –’Twas Dad who was reliable!
Like a scratched record, the words were grating,
For my heart, back then, was not set on the Bible.

For I had seen my Dad succeed,
He worked hard, his job to fit,
A brain and work was all you need,
‘God is good’ - not a factor in it.

So I got stuck in, all work and toil,
Never looked up, ploughed the soil,
‘God is good’, was never right for me,
Success comes, growing your own tree!

But my little tree fell to the ground,
Not a very nice time to be around.
Dad’s ‘God is good’, now struck a chord,
I ended up, giving my heart to the Lord.

So did a happy story end there?
Don’t worry, it has only now just begun!
‘God is good’, as Dad did share,
But applying it, that would be the fun!

Accept it?
Not this bit!
All beliefs?
No reliefs!
God is good?
Things go wrong!
Not so strong!
Life’s snares?
Who cares!
God is good?
On the treadmill
Always uphill!
Never win,
Back to sin!
God is good!
So frustrating!
Ever waiting!
Does He hear?
Where’s His ear?
God is Good!

What is going on? I cried,
Wouldn’t care if I died!
For your words Dad, ‘God is good’,
In you, the test of time they stood!

For at a time near the end of his life,
Things went wrong, he got into strife.
Yet, ‘God is good’ stayed on his lip,
Why wasn’t it in line with my trip?

My Dad he died, things hadn’t come right,
But he didn’t give in, to the end he did fight,
In ‘God is good’ he continued to trust,
From earth to earth, from dust to dust.

Yesterday, we took Mum to visit his grave,
Four years to the day since he died.
Simple words there, his memory they save,
But ‘God is good’ is what he cried.

Over this time I have now learned,
God’s love is given it is not earned.
Dad’s ‘God is good’, I too can trust,
As my life to Jesus, I give to adjust.

A DAVID MUSING

Very shortly, (so I must hurry and finish this!) we have friends coming to stay, whom we have not seen for some time, as they live a long way away.

When they come though, the length of time we have been apart will seem as if it was just yesterday, for that is the way good friends are!

Our best friend, Jesus, is available to us 24/7, but if we are honest, we sometimes desert Him for a while. Yet, like human best friends, when we get together again, it is just like the absence never happened. Be encouraged.

Thank you Lord.

Phew - done! And they haven't arrived yet! The Lord is on my side!

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
