TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'
A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 20 weeks of PGIM)FROM “ORGANIZED†TO “ORGANIC†(Continued)
We saw 3 weeks ago.......
"under the Old Covenant there was a separation between the Priests and the people, something which re-entered the Christian church through the Roman Catholics and despite attempts to get rid of it through the Reformation, effectively is still with us today, in so many ways."
Then 2 weeks ago.......
At the time of the death of Jesus, a miracle took place (the curtain in the Temple torn from top to bottom opening up, once again, direct access for us to the Father) signifying the change from the Old Covenant to the New. For it was the direct result of, and response to, what happened when Jesus died on the cross.
So what then, are the implications of this change in Covenants?
Over the past 2 weeks.....
1. WE NOW HAVE A PERMANENT SACRIFICE MADE ON OUR BEHALF
2. SALVATION HAS BECOME A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
This week.....
3. THE KINGDOM IS FOUND WITHIN US
This amazing truth follows on logically from last week. As salvation is now a personal experience, so it is logical that God resides in those who have made this individual decision to follow Him.
This was, and remains, a huge change from the original 'family salvation' of the Patriarchs, followed by the 'national salvation' of Israel from Moses until Jesus. The Pharisees and religious leaders of the time could not grasp this concept of the kingdom being inherited on the basis of an individual's decision.....
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.†3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.†4 “How can a man be born when he is old?†Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!†5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. (John 3:1-5)
And the teaching of the 'New Covenant' taken one step further, when the Pharisees were looking the kingdom to come to the nation state of Israel, to set them free from Roman domination.....
The Coming of the Kingdom of God
20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†(Luke 17:20-21)
What an amazing truth! For it sets us free! No longer do we have to have the right relatives or belong to a specific race of people! For all can come enter the kingdom by being born again! Hallelujah!
Jesus was, and remains, a revolutionary! He turned the world upside down! Religious thinking, then and now, is turned on its head! No longer do we need to belong to a group to inherit God's kingdom. Not a family. Not a nation. Not a denomination. Not a church. For our salvation is a personal gift from God (not bestowed by a minister, pastor or priest) for belief in Jesus.....
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:22-3)
Money will not buy you the kingdom.....
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! (Acts 8:20)
Nor will religious behaviour, that is following the rules, regulations or practices of your church grouping.....
39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. 42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. (Luke 11:39-42)
As the kingdom is within, we no longer need the services of any intermediary other than the Holy Spirit.....
We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. (Romans 8:26b-27)
.....through Jesus.....
34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (Romans 8:34)
We will explore next week how kingdom living is very different to what we see in the church today.
(This theme to be continued next week)

FROM THE WORD
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus"Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.†In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.†“How can a man be born when he is old?†Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!†Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.†“How can this be?†Nicodemus asked. “You are Israel’s teacher,†said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.â€" (John 3:1-21)
Slaves to Righteousness
"What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:15-23)
Six Woes
"When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised. Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it.†One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.†Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’ Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.†When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say." (Luke 6:37-54)

622. AT THE CONSTRUCTION JOB
There's this cathedral that's still being worked on, and the workers have rigged a "cage elevator" inside so they can get material up and down to the upper floors. A characteristic of these "cage elevators" is that the doors (gate) must be closed manually for them to be "called" to another floor.
One day one of the workers, Peter by name, takes the elevator to the top floor, and it is subsequently needed on the first floor by the sexton. Unfortunately, Peter forgot and left the door open. After the sexton rings for the elevator a couple times, to no avail, he yells up for the worker to send the lift back down. Visitors to the cathedral were treated to this sight: The sexton of the cathedral, head tipped up, yelling up to the heavens:
"Peter! CLOSE THE GATES!!!"
621. ALMOST RIGHT
A drunk man who smelled like a beer sat down on a subway seat next to a priest.
The man's tie was stained, his face was smeared with red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began to read. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked 'Say Father, what causes arthritis?' The priest replies 'My son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap wicked women, too much alcohol and contempt for your fellow man' 'Well I'll be darned' the drunk muttered, returning to his newspaper.
The priest thinking about what he said, nudged the drunk and apologised. 'I'm sorry to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?'
'I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does.'
620. THE CHURCH CAR
The minister of a well-attended, strong, and enthusiastic church often showed himself ready and able to deal with any situation that might come up.
One Sunday, just as the minister was reaching the climax of his sermon, his own young son entered the church, ran to the center aisle, started making loud beeps and brrrmms like a car without a muffler, then zoomed right toward him.
The minister stopped his sermon, pointed directly at his son, and commanded, "Jimmy, park the car immediately beside your mother on that bench (pointing), turn off the ignition, and hand her the keys."

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Why do pigs like to wallow in mud?ANSWER: It's not because they're dirty animals or like being dirty. Pigs don't perspire and wallowing in mud simply helps them to cool off. (Do mud baths improve their complexions too?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is the only bone in the body that does not connect to other bones?

888. NEEDING A SOLID FOUNDATION
The Leaning Tower of Pisa has been leaning since it was first built - way back in 1155 - thanks to a sandy foundation. It started leaning when it was being built. Rather than begin again, the builders adjusted the third floor (making the north walls longer and the south walls shorter so the top would be level). Construction stopped at this point, due to political unrest, and didn't start again for 90 years. When more floors were added in the late thirteenth century, the weight made the building lean in the OTHER direction. The workers tried to adjust for it once again, by lengthening the south walls in the belfry. There have since been many attempts to stabilise the building so it won't fall over but of course, not to straighten it. (Much like our lives really! Is why Jesus is called the rock, the solid foundation upon which to build.)
889. FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS
Shell Oil started out as a novelty shop in London called The Shell Shop, which actually sold seashells. The shop owner imported shells from around the world and decided he might as well export kerosene at the same time. Eventually, The Shell Shop evolved into Shell Transport and Trading Company and then the name got shortened to plain old Shell Oil Company and is now one of the world’s largest companies. (Shelling out millions to its shareholders.)
890. A BAD INFLUENCE
Influenza got its name from a belief that the stars' "influence" was responsible for the disease. Centuries ago, the stars were believed to influence many things, especially health. (Some things, no matter how often disproved, still remain the same.)

18. WHAT COMES OFF GOES ONWanting to lose weight, a woman placed a picture of a shapely, pinup model INSIDE her refrigerator to remind her of her goal. It worked like a charm as the woman discovered that she had lost ten pounds in the first month of using this method. The downside to this was that her husband spent so much time going into the fridge to look at the picture that he ended up gaining fifteen pounds!
19. THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM
A very nervous man, accompanied by his nagging wife, was examined by a doctor. After checking the chart, he nodded and wrote the man a prescription for a powerful tranquilliser.
The man asked, "How often do I take these."
"Let's start off with once every six hours. But they're not for you." replied the doctor.
"They're for your wife."
20. FAITHFULNESS
An elderly man lay in a hospital, with his wife of 55 years sitting at his bedside. "Is that you Ethel, at my side again?" he whispered.
"Yes, dear," she answered.
He softly said to her, "Remember years ago when I was in the Veteran's Hospital? You were with me then. You were with me when we lost everything in a fire. and Ethel, when we were poor - you stuck with me then too."
"Yes my dear," she responded again, so lovingly.
The man sighed and said, "I tell you Ethel, you are bad luck!"

Gospel for Asia Meeting Need for Clean Water Village by Village with More than 5,000 'Jesus Wells'
World Water Day March 22 Highlights 'Haves' and 'Have-nots' of Globe's Most Precious ResourceGospel for Asia
CARROLLTON, TX (ANS) -- As the international community celebrates the 20th anniversary of World Water Day, 17 percent of the globe's population still do not have access to clean drinking water. Gospel for Asia (www.gfa.org) is seeking to reduce the imbalance of those who lack this most basic resource in 14 South Asian countries.
A child dies every 15 seconds from lack of clean water. In the face of a daunting, worldwide task, Gospel for Asia is responding by digging "Jesus Wells"
"It is unconscionable that one child dies every 15 seconds from a lack of clean water, while we in the United States spend more than $21 billion on bottled water annually," said K. P. Yohannan, founder and president of Gospel for Asia (GFA). "World Water Day brings focus to the involvement that everyone can have in sharing the globe's most valuable resource."
An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993, as the first World Water Day. This year's 20th anniversary theme is water cooperation.
In the face of a daunting, worldwide task, Gospel for Asia is responding by digging "Jesus Wells" to provide clean water for drinking and cooking in rural areas, villages and even some metropolitan slums. "Jesus Wells" are often the only source of water for many of the 250 million Dalits, the "untouchables" who are forbidden by upper castes from drawing water from nearby central wells.
To date, more than 5,000 "Jesus Wells" exist throughout South Asia through donations by the "haves" who are prompted to action by their concern for the "have-nots." GFA also provides "BioSand" water filters that produce 98 percent pure water for individual families and small communities. Basic hygiene education about clean water and hand-washing is being delivered through its Women's Fellowship ministry.
World Water Day provides an opportunity to highlight staggering facts about water:
* One in six people does not have access to clean water.
* 3.4 million people die each year from water-related diseases, a number approaching the total population of Los Angeles.
* Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among the world's children under age five. Around 1.5 million children, nearly one in five, die of preventable diarrhea, which kills more children than malaria, AIDS and measles combined.
* Globally, women spend 200 million hours a day collecting water. This is a task equivalent to building 28 Empire State Buildings each day.
* In developing countries, the most common contaminant of drinking water is fecal matter.
In many South Asian villages, residents use the same muddy pools of rain water for bathing, washing their clothes, cooking, drinking and even latrines. In some remote areas, there is no water at all, especially in the drought season, when temperatures rise above 100 degrees.
"The vast majority of the illnesses we see in mobile medical clinics in South Asia are directly related to unclean water," said Dr. Daniel Johnson, medical director of GFA. "A proliferation of myths and a lack of basic hygiene and medical understanding about water needlessly continue to lead people to their own demise."
"Jesus Wells" are often dug near GFA's Bridge of Hope children's centers for the poorest of the poor. The location of the wells acquaints neighbors with the educational opportunities available for their children and builds relationships, even as Jesus did with the Samaritan woman at the well.
"The families benefiting from the priceless gift of clean water are learning of an even greater gift--Jesus' love for them," said Yohannan. "Let's provide for those who are still waiting to have their first glass of clean water."

A REVELATION OF... GOD'S CALL TO HIS CHURCHWe live in a church system that has evolved over the past, nearly 2000 years. It is obvious that the church had problems of doctrine and organisation right from its formation. Many people are reluctant to admit to this, but there were difficulties between Jews and gentiles in a theological sense, as well as practical organisational problems in terms of looking after the needy widows. However, over the centuries, church structures developed and became formalised along human lines. While the Reformation saw some changes, both in theology and organisation, the old, unbiblical, structures have tended to replicate themselves within our modern denominations and groupings. The Bible warns of this.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:8)
Today, in these end times, God is calling His church back to basics. To its relational roots rather than formal structural organisation and methods that restrict, through human intervention, the Holy Spirit from truly working in the way He would wish.
Yes, God is calling us today to return to the principles set out in the New Testament, not to create the 'perfect church', for it will still have you and I in it, but rather, one capable of absorbing the promised bountiful end-time harvest.

WAXING LYRICAL
Our God is full of surprises! Comfort is not part of His vocabulary! 10 years ago we were called to shift from Tauranga to Napier. This becomes a real test of obedience.A MINUTE IS A LONG TIME IN GOD
When you are relaxed and enjoying life,
And all is normal with kids and wife.
When you are living in such a beautiful place,
And all is going well in running your race.
You are happy with how life is treating you,
Challenges yes - not too many - just a few.
Then along comes God, with His own plan,
Designed to upset the comfort of a man.
One minute the world seems simply so good,
The next, upon its head, is now being stood!
"David, I'm asking you to shift city and church",
My comfortable brain, with pain it did now lurch!
"But surely my God, this cannot be true?"
"Yes my son, it's what I'm asking of you."
"Well Lord , please give confirmation,
To help me overcome my consternation!"
Over the past two weeks, confirmations I've been given,
Logical improbabilities so great, must be God driven.
"Oh Lord, surely this is what you want me to do,
Have your way in my life Lord, I give in to you.
For you know best Lord, your plan for me,
I accept it now Lord, on bended knee."
Yes, one brief minute is a long time in God you know,
But obey His voice we must, if in Him we are to grow.

A DAVID MUSING
In the past couple of days we have suddenly gone from a long, hot (for us), very dry Summer, into cooler autumn weather, with a little rain to start breaking the drought, much to the relief of our large farming community. It has been a magnificent Summer for us city dwellers, with barbeques and beach sports to the fore. More like I remember from the 'idyllic' days of childhood, when the summers seemed to go on forever.Life too, is much like the weather - unpredictable! Hot and cold, fine and stormy. You don't really know what it is going to be like the next minute, let alone the next day or week. Kathy and I certainly experienced this instant change when we suffered our home invasion, some 18 months ago now. One minute watching TV, the next literally fighting for your life.
One lesson I have learned is the need to keep short accounts, of both the good and the bad, for you literally never know which moment is going to be your last! In Jesus, death is not to be feared, as it is for many others. However there still is a need to live every day fully, as if it is your last. For there is a chance it could be!
Let us do those things, particularly for Jesus, that we have always promised ourselves we would do. Let us spend time with those we love and tell them that we do. Let us make our wrongs right, right now.
Funny thing is, if we do, we find that we enjoy the time we still have, even more!
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
