WINNING THE SPIRITUAL WAR!

Amongst many in the church, particularly those of charismatic or pentecostal persuasion, a perverse, reverse pride is often taken from suffering spiritual attack. "I must be in God's will for satan to bother with me!" Or, "Something good must be about to happen because I am being attacked!" Or again, "XYZ is born to be our leader, for they suffer the most spiritual hardship!" Other, similar examples, abound.

When you move from a more traditional church environment to a Spirit-filled one, it is readily apparent that the spiritual battle is more intense. Spiritual warfare is a very real experience. Of this, there is in my mind no doubt, having been both an observer and a participant.

The problem though, is not found in fighting the battle, which we must all do, but rather, in our broader perception of the strategy of the war. Day after day we fight the battle, concentrating on the issues at hand. We glory at being on the frontline of the battlefield. We put on our spiritual armour and fight with all our might! But we lose sight of the strategy of winning the war in the heat of the ongoing daily battle of life. How often have you heard it said or thought yourself, "A little more warfare and we will see the breakthrough!" However it mostly seems that the elusive spiritual victory is always just one moment, one day, away!

When it never comes, we finally collapse in disappointment, dejection and rejection - of ourselves, the church, and maybe even, of God. For our expectations have been crushed, our hope extinguished. Effectively satan has won. We give up. We drift disillusioned back into the world, or maybe, simply accept a lower level of living out our faith in God.

So what is the answer?

The answer is found with'in', not with'out'! For Jesus came that we might have abundant life, not endless strife. We are to be victors, not victims. We are to have peace, even in the midst of battle.

You see, we look for the solution to the problem everywhere but where it really is. We confront satan with an armour full of holes and a sword made of balsawood, not steel. Then we're surprised when we are defeated!

So before we 'shundy bundy' (New Zealand term for spiritual warfare) we first need to get our life right with God. To become like Jesus, to submit to the will of the Father in our life as He did in His, even to death on the cross. To repair the holes in our armour, to strengthen the sword of the Word in our lives so that it truly becomes a living reality within.

Imagine what would have happened had David tried to fight Goliath wearing King Saul's armour! He would have been decapitated with a single blow! Yet how could he possibly have expected to kill the giant with slingshot and pebble? Ridiculous! Impossible! Yet it became reality because he listened to and followed the instructions of His God.

You see, our armour is not built up through strength, whether in the natural or the spirit, but in the world's, and many Christians' eyes through supposed weakness, in submission to the Fathers will, through servanthood, ever becoming more like Jesus.

The Lord has promised a group of overcomers (David's) to defeat satan. In the eyes of the world (the Philistine army) and even in the eyes of most Christians (Israel's army) they will look puny, insignificant and outgunned. Yet, through obedience, they will, as promised, defeat satan (Goliath) in a way inexplicable and incomprehensible to man. David, at the time, was but a simple humble shepherd, yet he defeated the pride of the Philistine army, simply by following what God instructed him to do.

Let us then concentrate upon growing into the character of Jesus. The more we do so, the greater the victory in the spirit will be ours.

Perfectly described in the 'mission' verse of WWJ Ministries, "They overcame him (i.e. satan) by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus) and by the word of their testimony (Holy Spirit); they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death (Submission to the Father). (Revelation 12:11)

FROM THE WORD

"What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.” Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran." (1 Samuel 17:31-51)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

TO BE or TO DO

701. Man expects 'to do' in order 'to be', but God requires us 'to be' in order 'to do'.

702. In God's dictionary, 'doing' follows 'being'.

703. 'To do' is simply living out our 'to be'.

704. If 'to do' does not follow out of our 'to be', then our 'to be' is 'not to be'!

705. 'To be' a witness is 'to do' God's will.

706. We are first called 'to be', then 'to do'.

707. Too often we try 'to do' when God is simply calling us 'to be'.

708. 'To do' good, it is best 'to be' good!

709. To best know what 'to do', we must first learn how 'to be'.

710. If 'what to do' is your question, look to 'what to be' to find your answer.

711. When 'to be or not to be' is the question, 'to be and to do' is the answer.

712. True 'being' results in 'doing'.

713. 'Being' without 'doing' is like a motor without a car. Makes plenty of noise but takes you nowhere!

714. 'To be' is the salt, 'to do' the light. We are called to be both.

You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. 430. A DRIER CLIMATE
Pastor Bob shocked the congregation when he announced that he was resigning from the church and moving to a drier climate.

After the service, a very distraught lady came to the pastor with tears in her eyes. "Oh, Pastor Bob, we are going to miss you so much. We don't want you to leave!"

Pastor Bob patted her hand and said, "Now, now, Carolyn, don't carry on. The pastor who takes my place might be even better than me".

"Yeah," Carolyn said, with a tone of disappointment in her voice, "That's what they said the last time too."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Are fish more abundant in cold ocean water or warm water?

ANSWER: Most people would guess that ocean life is more abundant in warm water. They'd be wrong. All kinds of marine life - plant and animal - are more abundant in colder waters. Many of the best fishing grounds are found in the coldest places. Why? Cold water holds more dissolved gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, which marine plants need to photosynthesize. The more plant food you have, the more fish and sea mammals you'll see. Antarctic waters are simply teeming with microscopic plankton that attracts whales and fish. (Do fish feel the cold?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Are there really such things as elephant graveyards?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

591. ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL
'Equinox’ is the Latin for ‘equal night’. Twice a year, in the spring and in the autumn (fall), the sun passes directly over the earth's equator and the length of day is virtually equal throughout the entire world, with both twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness. In the spring, it's called the vernal equinox (equal night of spring) and in the fall, the autumnal equinox. A time of the hope of the summer to come or memories of a summer gone. (But wouldn’t 100% summer be boring? Ask Californians.)

592. WASN'T ONE ENOUGH?
One Molasses Flood is unbelievable, two impossible! Yes? No! The second one, which strangely enough, also killed 21 people, took place on December 11, 1932 in Sucarnoochee, Mississippi. As in the earlier incident, a tank exploded letting the hot liquid roared through the town. (A bitter-sweet experience!)

593. HIGH JUMPER
When an armadillo is threatened, it jumps straight into the air. This works well to startle other predators, but if on a road when a car is approaching, it is not a good idea. Indeed, if they would stay still, armadillos are actually small enough for cars to safely travel over them, so long as they don't hit the tyres. (Instinct acts instinctively.)

THE WORLD'S GREATEST GROANS

THE JERSEY
David Beckham, the famous English soccer player, is teaching his new son Romeo the finer points about soccer. After a while Romeo asks his Dad what number he should have on his uniform when he starts playing for a team.

David replied "Wear 4 out there Romeo."

OLD AGE
Many people assume that Earl Gray tea got its name by being the favorite of that English earl. However, it seems that there is a small town in Wales named Earl Gray where the town's citizens are getting concerned about the ability of their mayor to continue in office.

The incumbent was initially elected in 1972 and she has run unopposed in every election since. Unfortunately, her age now hinders her from getting about. What the citizens are saying is that . . . the Earl Gray mayor, she ain't what she used to be!

THE RATIO
The software engineering field is staffed primarily by men; the ratio of male to female software engineers is about 15 to 1. This makes it pretty easy for women to find potential mates among their peers. However, software types have a well-earned reputation for being . . . well, a little strange.

While discussing the prospect of working in the software industry, one woman commented to another, "The odds are good, but the goods are odd."

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS

HOUSES
Upon entering the Promised Land, the skills of settled agriculture learned from the Egyptians during the Captivity were put into practice and the previously nomadic people entered into a settled lifestyle, living in permanent houses.

For most this was a one-roomed shelter with the people spending as much time outdoors as possible. 'Bayith', the Hebrew word for house, means shelter. A place to rest after a day spent outside. God too, is referred to as a shelter or refuge. (Psalm 61:3, Isaiah 4:6)

THE FATHERLESS GENERATION

Newman Weekly is a weekly article by Dr Muriel Newman of the New Zealand Centre for Political Debate, a web-based forum at www.nzcpd.com for the lively and dynamic exchange of political ideas.

This week, concerns over youth gangs and violence have hit the headlines. It is a problem that can be found to a greater or lesser degree in many towns and cities throughout the country.

The debate over what can be done has ranged widely from more council amenities for young people, making education more relevant and improving after-school activities, to more pro-active truancy monitoring, more effective parenting, greater co-ordination between social agencies, and better policing.

While suggestions on what should be done to improve the situation have been free flowing, little has been said about the underlying causes of the problem. The reason is that it is no longer considered to be politically correct to discuss issues relating to personal responsibility, the home and the family. Yet the reality is that these are at the heart of the problem: children raised in stable, loving families, are more likely to join sports teams, rather than gangs.

Any discussion with police or those who work with troubled youth will quickly identify that the largest proportion of them come from homes where their biological father is absent: children raised in families without a father, where there is inadequate supervision and a lack of socialisation, are far more likely to become involved in anti-social behaviour and crime, than those raised with a dad.

Chief Youth Court Judge, Andrew Beecroft, in a speech at Parliament a few years ago identified six characteristics of serious youth offenders: “85 percent are male, the majority have no contact with their father, 80 percent do not go to school and have chronic drug or alcohol addictions, most have psychological or psychiatric issues, and 50 percent – up to 90 percent in some courts – are Maori”.

He explained that many of these boys have no adult male role model: “14, 15, and 16 year-old boys seek out role models like ‘heat seeking missiles’. It’s either the leader of the Mongrel Mob or it’s a sports coach or it’s Dad. But an overwhelming majority of boys who I see in the Youth Court have lost contact with their father. …What I’m saying is that I’m dealing in the Youth Court with boys for whom their Dad is simply not there, never has been, gone, vanished and disappeared”.

Judge Beecroft went on to say: “…every single young boy that we have dealt with has been abused as a child”.

This is why I am so passionately opposed to public policy and practice that encourages family breakdown and excludes biological fathers. A biological father is a child’s traditional protector. Removing him from the lives of his children leaves them extremely vulnerable to abuse, neglect and failure.

That is not to say that every child being raised without a dad that ends up in trouble, or for that matter that every child raised in a loving two parent household by their biological parents, turn out to be little angels. But, on the balance of probability, children raised without their natural father, will face greater difficulties in life, than children brought up with their dad to love, guide and protect them.

In 1990, Dr Daniel Amneus, Professor of English at California State University, in his book The Garbage Generation put it this way: “Most criminals come from female-headed families. Most gang members come from female-headed families. Most addicts come from female-headed families. Most rapists come from female-headed families. Most educational failures come from female-headed families. Most illegitimate births occur to females who themselves grew up in female-headed families”.

He then went on to say: “If we are to deal meaningfully with crime, what we must do is reduce the number of female-headed families; what we must do is prevent the divorce courts from expelling half of society's fathers from their homes; what we must do is terminate a welfare system which displaces millions of men from the principal male role, that of family-provider. What we must do is make the father the head of the family”.

Here in New Zealand over the years, our policy makers have steadfastly ignored that wisdom. Instead, driven by a feminist agenda, which seeks to create equality for women by undermining men, society has now reached a sorry state: taxpayers are funding a hundred thousand women and girls to struggle to raise their children on their own, there is an epidemic of tens of thousands of abused children, and there is now an escalation in youth gangs and violence.

Boys are falling further and further behind at school now that we have taken away an external examination system that encouraged them to strive and excel. Men are finding themselves excluded from more and more of the professions like teaching that used to largely be their domain. Increasing numbers of fathers are being alienated from their children by our female-biased family court. Dads and grandfathers up and down the country are now afraid to hug and kiss their children in public.

It has all gone too far, and the sooner we return to some balance and common sense, the better.

To turn the situation around, we need to realise that New Zealand society is stronger when men and women both play an equal role, and that it is not in anyone’s interest to marginalize either. Further, we should be encouraging and supporting strong and committed families by removing the incentives in the welfare system and in family law that have lead to the massive undermining of the family.

A MINUTE IS A LONG TIME IN GOD

When you are relaxed and enjoying life,
And all is normal with kids and wife.
When you are living in such a beautiful place,
And all is going well in running your race.
You are happy with how life is treating you,
Challenges yes - not too many - just a few.

Then along comes God, with His own plan,
Designed to upset the comfort of a man.
One minute the world seems simply so good,
The next, upon its head, is now being stood!

"David, I'm asking you to shift city and church",
My comfortable brain, with pain it did now lurch!

"But surely my God, this cannot be true?"
"Yes my son, it's what I'm asking of you."
"Well Lord , please give confirmation,
To help me overcome my consternation!"

Over the past two weeks, confirmations I've been given,
Logical improbabilities so great, must be God driven.
"Oh Lord, surely this is what you want me to do,
Have your way in my life Lord, I give in to you.
For you know best Lord, your plan for me,
I accept it now Lord, on bended knee."

Yes, one brief minute is a long time in God you know,
But obey His voice we must, if in Him we are to grow.

Amazing what can be done with wood!

Enough of this endless talk,
