WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

The major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".

Fifteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.

Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.

So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.

THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE

To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.

The relevant Scriptures can be accessed by clicking on the blue links.

THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 22 “The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ 23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 24 “Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 ”‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 25:14-30)

Like the Parable of the Ten Minas, the major emphasis of the talents, is maximizing the spiritual abilities or gifts we have been given in and for the Lord's service.

Too often we hear, maybe even from our own mouth, words like, "I have nothing to offer God/the church/others for I have no talents, not like xxxx down the road.....!"

This, as the parable says, is a copout! There are several points to be made.

Firstly, all the servants (Christians) of the master (God/Jesus) had at least one talent. No, we are not all the same in terms of gifts given, but every believer can, indeed must, make a contribution to the ongoing work of their Saviour and Lord, for the kingdom to grow.

For we are all, as Paul explains, different but vital parts of the one body;

1 Corinthians 12:12-20

Secondly, there are those who have been given what are called, the 'ministry gifts'. This does not mean that they have a title, or are paid, or are responsible to 'do it all', but that God has given them talents to help train US to DO THE WORK and become MATURE in Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-13

I also hear, "I would love to have his or her talents!" But would you really? For, the greater the giftings, the greater the responsibilities! And, from experience and observation, the greater spiritual attacks also!

Ephesians 4:11-13

I also hear, "I would love to have his or her talents!" But would you really? For, the greater the giftings, the greater the responsibilities! And, from experience and observation, the greater spiritual attacks also!

James 3:1

The same would apply to the other ministry gifts as well.

Of course, there is a wider range of spiritual gifts mentioned in several places, such as...

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Thirdly, in our walk with Jesus, we are all required to develop spiritual fruit in our lives.

Galatians 5:22-5

I would suggest that if you and I fully developed these character traits in our life, we would reflect Jesus to others. What a talent that would be!

Our talents are not fixed. As we develop in our walk with Jesus, He may well give more talents to us. We are told to always desire the greater gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31

Finally, the conclusion of this parable is the same as the previous one. A serious warning! If we don't use our God given talents for Him, we will be banished into outer darkness! It is not enough to simply believe. We must put our beliefs into action in order to receive our heavenly reward.

"Lord, help us to fully utilize Your talents, given to us, for You".

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Changing Water into Wine (John 2:1-11)
As requested by His mother at the wedding.

“Mother, why should you involve me? My time hasn’t come yet,”
“Fill the jars with water,”
“Pour some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.”

Jesus Clearing the Temple (John 2:12-25)
Overturning the tables and driving people out with a whip. Talking to the dove sellers.

“Take these things out of here! Don’t turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Then when His authority was questioned by the leaders and a miracle asked for.

“Destroy this Temple, and in three days I’ll raise it up!”

Jesus Meets Nicodemus at Night (John 3:1-21)
The Jewish teacher.

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “Unless you are reborn, you can’t experience God’s kingdom.”

Nicodemus asked how?

“I tell you the truth, you can’t enter God’s kingdom unless you are born of water and the Spirit,” “What’s born of the flesh is flesh, and what’s born of the Spirit is Spirit. Don’t be surprised at my telling you, ‘You must be reborn.’ The wind blows wherever it wants, and just as you hear the sound it makes, but know where it’s coming from or where it’s going, that’s how it is for everyone who is born of the spirit.”
“You’re a famous teacher in Israel, and yet you don’t understand such things?” “I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know and give evidence regarding what we have seen, but you refuse to accept our testimony. If you don’t trust what I say when I tell you about earthly things, how would you ever trust what I say if I were to tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven, but the Son of man came down from heaven. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that everyone who trusts in him will have eternal life.
“For God loved the world, and this is how: he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who trusts in him shouldn’t die, but have eternal life. God didn’t send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Those who trust in him are not condemned, while those who don’t trust in him are condemned already because they didn’t trust in the one and only Son of God. This is how the decision is made: the light came to the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their actions were evil. All those who do evil hate the light and don’t come into the light, because they don’t want their actions to be exposed. But those who do good come into the light, so that what God accomplishes in them can be revealed.”

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: If you cut an earthworm in half, will it grow into two new worms?

ANSWER:
This widely held idea is largely a myth. While it is true that earthworms can regenerate, when you cut one in half, both parts don't regenerate into fully developed worms. Only the front end of the worm, containing the ‘brain’ (cerebral ganglion) has a chance of growing new segments. (2 into 1 doesn’t go, 1 into 2 doesn’t grow!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: How did trivia (such as this), get its name?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

597. SPIDER NEST
The nest in which spiders or other insects deposit their eggs is called a ‘nidus’. (Eggspedient?)

598. SPIDER SPEED
A spider can spin a traditional round web in less than an hour. (No, it’s not that your housework is behind. Rather, spiders are speedy.)

599. A MAN OF MANY TALENTS
U.S. President George Washington, was the first person to breed roses in the US. He laid out his own garden at Mt. Vernon and filled it with his own rose selections. One of his varieties he named after his mother and it is still being grown today. (A thorn in his political opponents sides too?)

TILL DEATH DO US PART!

77. MARRIAGE QUIPS
*** Getting married is very much like going to a restaurant with friends. You order what you want, then when you see what the other person has, you wish you had ordered that.
*** After a quarrel, a husband said to his wife, "You know, I was a fool when I married you." She replied, "Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn't notice."
*** A lady inserted an 'ad' in the classifieds: "Husband wanted". Next day she received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: "You can have mine."
*** The bride, upon her engagement, went to her mother and said, "I've found a man just like father!" Her mother replied, "So what do you want from me, sympathy?"
*** When a woman steals your husband, there is no better revenge than to let her keep him.
*** Man is incomplete until he is married. Then he is finished.
*** A little boy asked his father, "Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?" And the father replied, "I don't know son, I'm still paying."
*** Young Son: Is it true, Dad, I heard that in some parts of Africa a man doesn't know his wife until he marries her? Dad: That happens in every country, son.
*** Then there was a man who said, "I never knew what real happiness was until I got married; and then it was too late."
*** A woman was telling her friend, "It is I who made my husband a millionaire." "And what was he before you married him?" asked the friend. The woman replied, "A billionaire."
*** "The trouble with being the best man at a wedding is that you never get to prove it."
*** If you want your spouse to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep.
*** Just think, if it weren't for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all.
*** Personally, I think one of the greatest things about marriage is that as both husband and father, I can say anything I want to around the house. Of course, no one pays the least bit of attention.
*** How do most men define marriage? A very expensive way to get your laundry done free.
*** The most effective way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once.
*** Words to live by: Do not argue with a spouse who is packing your parachute.
*** First guy (proudly): "My wife's an angel!" Second guy: "You're lucky, mine's still alive."
*** Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are beautiful.

78. UNCARING DEVOTION
This elderly man was at home, dying in bed. He smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies baking. He wanted one last cookie before he died. He fell out of bed, crawled to the landing, rolled down the stairs, and crawled into the kitchen where his wife was busily baking cookies. With waning strength he crawled to the table and was just barely able to lift his withered arm to the cookie sheet. As he grasped a warm, moist, chocolate chip cookie, his favorite kind, his wife suddenly whacked his hand with a spatula.

"Why?" he whispered. "Why did you do that?"

"They're for the funeral" she replied.

79. TIPS FROM THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT
The efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note of caution. "You don't want to try these techniques at home."

"Why not?" asked someone from the back of the audience.

"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," the expert explained. "She made lots of trips to the refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying just a single item at a time. 'Hon,' I suggested, 'Why don't you try carrying several things at once?'"

The voice from the back asked, "Did it save time?"

The expert replied, "Actually, yes. It used to take her 20 minutes to get breakfast ready. Now I do it in seven."

Japanese journalist beheaded by ISIS was a Christian

By Michael Ashcraft and Mark Ellis

Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, beheaded by ISIS in a newly released gruesome video, also happened to be a devout Christian.

A reporter seasoned in war zones, Goto traveled to Syria hoping that Japan’s pacifist stance would grant him relative safety, unlike other journalists from nations leading airstrikes against ISIS.

He failed to take into account this new brand of terrorists is breaking all previous norms, with no apparent limits to their depravity.

“You, like your foolish allies in the Satanic coalition, have yet to understand that we, by Allah’s grace, are an Islamic caliphate with authority and power, an entire army thirsty for you blood,” a masked militant says in the video while holding a knife to Goto’s neck.

In his reporting, Goto focused on the human cost and suffering of war, not on who was winning or losing. An Associated Press report quoted his former pastor, Hiroshi Tamura, who cited his Christian faith for inspiring his reporting.

Goto accepted Jesus in 1997, which was somewhat rare considering only two percent of the population of Japan is Christian. Christ’s call to reach the poor and broken in sprit seemed to motivate his journalism.

“I have seen horrible places and have risked my life,” he told ChristianToday.com. “I know that somehow God will always save me.”

But instead he joined the ranks of Christian martyrs who have given their lives for a higher cause – the cause of Christ. Terrorists may have taken his physical life, but they could not rob his soul of heaven’s joys.

While he focused on refugees, poverty and innocent victims of war, his reporting also yearned for a world of peace and wellbeing, according to his mother, Junko Ishido.

Goto, 47, traveled to Syria in October 2014 to report on the war and to liberate an old friend, Haruna Yukawa, who was first captured by ISIS in August when he was peddling arms. Instead of negotiating Yukawa’s release, he himself was grabbed by the terror group.

At first the twosome appeared in a video on Jan. 20 demanding $200 million from the Japanese government – a sum equal to that committed by Japan in non-military aid to countries fighting ISIS.

But when the stipulated deadline passed, Yukawa was executed and Goto was then offered freedom, along with a Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, in exchange for an Iraqi terrorist in Jordan.

Jordan offered up Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, on Jordan’s death row for a 2005 attempted terrorist attack, in exchange for the pilot, but it demanded proof the pilot was still alive. Days passed without news of the exchange.

Then Saturday’s video appeared. It featured a black-clad terrorist speaking in a British accent – identified as the same “Jihadi John” who oversaw the beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley. Goto, dressed in orange prison-like garb, was on his knees and remained without speaking in an open desert.

The ISIS spokesman called out Japan’s premier: “Because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found,” he says. “So let the nightmare for Japan begin.”

Goto’s wife gave birth to their second child in October. He has an older daughter from a previous marriage.

Goto met Yukawa in April 2014 in Syria and took him under his wing to show him the ins and outs of moving about in conflict zones. “He was hapless and didn’t know what he was doing,” Goto told Reuters in August. “He needed someone with experience to help him.”

Yukawa was something of a lost soul. When his wife battled cancer, he attempted suicide unsuccessfully. Later his wife died, and Yukawa lived on the streets after his business went bankrupt and he lost his home. His efforts to become a military contractor was an attempt to get his life back together.

Goto was a compassionate free-lance journalist who focused on ordinary people in times of extraordinary suffering. He covered the diamond wars of Sierra Leone and the post tsunami regions of northern Japan.

In the days leading up to his death, friends set up a Facebook page calling for his release that drew tens of thousands of “likes.” Demonstrators in Japan protested international terrorism holding signs “I am Kenji” – a takeoff of the solidarity with the terrorist-struck French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo.

“Kenji lives on — in all our hearts, in our daily work, every time you smile with those around you, you will be sure to remember that big smile Kenji always gave us,” wrote Taku Nishimae, a New York filmmaker, as quoted in Yahoo News.

Yes, and he lives on in Heaven too.

WAXING LYRICAL

Another lesson God gave me on Bowentown Beach.

THE PATH

I came to a path as I walked along the beach,
An insignificant path, with a lesson to teach.
For we need, from our mistakes to learn,
If the right way in life, we are to turn.

My walk had not been going too good,
Wanting to get back as soon as I could.
My mind wasn’t working as well as it should.
"I am sure my path was near that log of wood!"

You know how it is, being engaged in wishful thinking,
Believing you’re afloat, when in reality, you’re sinking!
When you are fed up, having had enough,
The mind starts believing ridiculous stuff!

So it was, with this path today,
I was so keen to be on my way,
That I told myself it was the right one,
No doubt about it, ‘twas good as done.

At first glance, it looked just like the right path,
If it wasn’t, no worry, would surely be a laugh.
Surely doesn’t matter whatever path I take,
My goal, in the end, I am bound to make!

The path looked easy, so happily, off I went,
Keen to get home, my energy almost spent.
I’m on the way, the pathway must be right,
How could I doubt it, for I’ve seen the light!

But as I walked, a niggle started to grow,
Is this truly, the way I really want to go?
The scenery’s nice, the way appears easy,
But the rubbish there, that’s a bit sleazy!

By now I knew the path was the wrong one,
But what the heck, I am having lots of fun,
Many new experiences to check out in life,
This small deviation won’t get me in strife.

So I went on with a new spring in my stride
My pathway mistake, I knew I could hide.
For all paths end up at the same place,
I will surely get there, to see His face.

Then suddenly, I found my way blocked
By sewage ponds, what had I done?
The door to progress, now firmly locked,
Where can I go, where can I run?

In desperation now, I looked all around,
There must be a way out of this mess I am in.
A faint track there, my eyes have found,
Is named ‘Repentance’, for forgiveness of sin.

This path appeared difficult at first glance,
Through bushes, and damp, long grass,
But it was the only way my life to enhance,
If in the end, my test I was to pass.

So I found my way back to the path of life,
Grateful that Jesus made a way through the cross.
Having left the path where wrong was so rife,
In the sewage pond, He would no longer me toss.

He said, "My son, you made a mistake,
It wasn’t really your heart to go that way.
But I came to forgive mistakes you make,
Take care now, not to deliberately stray."

A DAVID MUSING

This week we have had a friend, another Kathleen, come to stay with us for an extended period. So if I call 'Kathleen' two women answer! LOL!

She is a pleasure to have stay and also a good Chinese food cook! So we are having all sorts of culinary delights!

Today however, it is my turn to have my first attempt at cooking smoked pulled pork, an American delicacy. Takes about 12 hours to do. Will let you know how I get on.

PS: Didn't turn out quite as well as I would have liked, but still very nice. Will try again so as to make it perfect!

So until next week.....

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
