WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

THE CHURCH 100-325AD

Today we will conclude this section by looking at two more writers who lived during this time. From both, we will see that the institutional church which was then forming, was distancing itself from spiritual gifts, but that they remained in the more informal congregations of the day.

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

CYPRIAN (AD195-258) Born in Carthage, he enjoyed a good education in rhetoric and law. Becoming a Christian in his eally 50's, He quickly rose to prominence, becoming bishop of Carthage within 2 years, a position he held for 8 years, until his martyrdom.

An avid student of Tertullian (see last week), he was not only aware of spiritual gifts, but his congregation practised them, even in times of severe persecution.....

it seemed best to us through many and clear visions.

Cyprian had a debate with Stephen, bishop of Rome, over the necessity for re-baptism of those first baptized by heretics. In his discussions he argued.....

One is not born by the imposition of hands when he receives the Holy Ghost, but in baptism, that so, being already born, he may receive the Holy Spirit, even as it happened to the first man Adam. For first God formed him and then breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

It is obvious from both this and the visions mentioned earlier, that the gifts of the spirit operated within his congregation. He also indicated elsewhere that they were active amongst the wider body also.

NOVATIAN (AD210-280) (pictured) A respected theologian, he was a presbyter in the church of Rome. He became embroiled in an argument with Cornelius, the bishop of Rome, over leniency towards those Christians who had 'lapsed' during persecution. (What would our attitude today be?!) He effectively spawned the first holiness movement, critical of the carnal and impure Christians of the establishing institutional church. The movement, called 'Cathari', meaning pure ones, spread quickly, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean and North African areas.

In Novatian's most important surviving writing, 'The Trinity', he talked about the ministry of the the Holy Spirit.....

This is he [the Holy Spirit] who places prophets in the Church, instructs teachers, directs tongues, gives powers and healings, does wonderful works, offers discrimination of spirits, affords powers of government, suggests counsels, and orders and arranges whatever other gifts there are of charismata; and thus making the Lord's Church everywhere, and in all, perfected and completed.

There are several other early writings confirming that the spiritual gifts remained operational amongst the dedicated followers of Jesus during this period.

So we can continue to say that.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit (Mark 1:21-8, Luke 4:31-7)
“Be quiet “Come out of him!”

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place (Mark 1:35-8, Luke 4:38-44)
“Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”

The Man with Leprosy (Matthew 8:1-4, Mark 1:40-45, Luke 5:12-16)
“I am willing. Be clean! See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 8:3-4

Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26)
“Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.
“Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins... Get up, take your mat and go home.”

The Calling of Matthew (Matthew5:9-13 , Mark 2:13-17, Luke 5:27-31)
“Follow me”
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Jesus Questioned About Fasting (Matthew 9:14-17, Mark 2:18-22, Luke 5:33-39)
“How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. “
“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

The Healing at the Pool (John 5:1-15)
“Do you want to get well?”
“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
“See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

Life Through the Son (John 5:16-30)
“My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
“I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

DISCIPLESHIP

214.-235. Discipleship is...

... doing the right thing because we want to, not because we are expected to.

... being a servant both to God and man.

... honouring God with body, soul and spirit.

... loving the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind.

... being 100% committed to the Lord's cause.

... putting the Lord first in all things.

... placing the Lord's desires ahead of our own.

... applying the Lord's will to our mind and emotions.

... accepting the Lord's correction graciously.

... being joyful in the Lord - even while being corrected!

... subverting our will to His.

... centred upon giving rather than receiving.

... becoming a little more like Jesus every day.

... being prepared to die for our Lord.

... honouring and worshipping God as Lord, rather than a 'holy Father Christmas.'

... being the one God would like us to be.

... placing God's needs and others godly needs ahead of our own.

... helping others attain to their ministries, even to the expense of our own.

... being Jesus to others.

... retaining the joy of the Lord in times of personal sadness.

... putting wrongs right - graciously!

... walking as one with the Lord, night and day.

878. 'A disciple' has no need of 'a title'.

879. A disciple turns words into actions.

880. Believers believe, while disciples live what they believe.

1315. A disciple 'walks the walk', not just 'talks the talk'.

784. COMMUNION PRACTICE
My little niece, Kelly, went with a neighbor girl to church
for First Communion practice. The pastor had the children
cup their hands, and when he gives them the "Host," in this
case, a piece of bread, he says, "God be with you."
Apparently this made quite an impression on my niece. She
came home and told her mother to cup her hands and bend
down. Kelly took a piece of bread from her sandwich, placed
it in her mother's hands, and whispered, in her most angelic
voice, "God will get you."

783. DEFINITIONS YOU NEED TO KNOW

- AMEN: The only part of a prayer that everyone knows.

- BULLETIN: Your receipt for attending the Service.

- CHOIR: A group of people whose singing allows the rest of the
Congregation to lip-sync.

- HOLY WATER: A liquid whose chemical formula is H2OLY.

- HYMN: A song of praise usually sung in a key three octaves higher
than that of the congregation's range.

- RECESSIONAL HYMN: The last song at the Service often sung a little
more quietly, since most of the people have already left.

- INCENSE: Holy Smoke!

- JONAH: The original "Jaws" story.

- JUSTICE: When kids have kids of their own.

- KYRIE ELEISON: The only Greek words that most can recognize
besides gyros and baklava.

- MAGI: The most famous trio to attend a baby shower.

- MANGER: Where Mary gave birth to Jesus because Joseph wasn't
covered by an HMO. The Bible's way of showing us that holiday travel
has always been rough.

- PEW: A medieval torture device still found in churches.

- PROCESSION: The ceremonial formation at the beginning of the
Service consisting of altar servers, the celebrant, and late
parishioners looking for seats.

- RECESSIONAL: The ceremonial procession at the conclusion of the
Service led by parishioners trying to beat the crowd to the parking
lot.

- RELICS: People who have been going to Church for so long, they
actually know when to sit, kneel, and stand.

- TEN COMMANDMENTS: The most important Top Ten list not given by
David Letterman.

- USHERS: The only people in the parish who don't know the seating
capacity of a pew.

SOME FUN FACTS

820. THE 'INES' HAVE IT!
Cats are feline, dogs canine. Sheep are ovine, cows bovine. (Humans undermine?)

821. LIQUID BLOOD
Blood serum and blood plasma are both terms for the liquid portion of the blood after blood cells have been separated out. The difference is that plasma contains fibrinogen, an important blood-clotting factor, while serum does not. (I was a clot not to know this. And my wife worked in a Blood Donors Clinic for 5 years!)

822. A SWEET DISCOVERY
Two German doctors, Oskar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering, who noticed that removing the pancreas caused diabetes in animals, discovered insulin in 1889. The actual hormone, which regulates the level of sugar in the body, was not actually isolated and used to treat diabetic patients until 1922. (Now we are making ever more use of it by multiplying the disease through our bad eating habits.)

DOG PROPERTY LAWS
If I like it, it's mine.
If it's in my mouth, it's mine.
If I can take it from you, it's mine.
If I had it a little while ago, it's mine.
If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way.
If I'm chewing something up, all the pieces are mine.
If it just looks like mine, it's mine.
If I saw it first, it's mine.
If it's broken, it's yours.

THINGS DOGS HAVE TO REMEMBER
* The garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff.
* I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table.
* I will not roll my toys behind the fridge.
* I must shake the rainwater out of my fur BEFORE entering the house.
* I will not eat the cats' food, before or after they eat it.
* I will stop trying to find the few remaining pieces of clean carpet in the house when I am about to throw up.
* I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc.
* "Kitty box crunchies" are not food.
* I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them.
* We do not have a doorbell.
* I will not bark each time I hear one on TV.
* I will not steal my Mom's underwear and dance all over the backyard with it.
* My head does not belong in the refrigerator.
* I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's driver's license and car registration.

MORE DOG DAIRY DOODLINGS
DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food they stuffed themselves with. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and may be snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal cage, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.

Peruvian woman miraculously healed by God, treks mountains proclaiming the Gospel

By Mark Ellis

(Photo: Sister Luz with digital audio player)

Sister Luz’s husband died when she was 35, which left her to raise four children by herself. When a prolonged and serious illness brought her to death’s doorstep, Jesus – the Master Surgeon – touched her life and changed her forever.

At age 50, after dealing with sickness for several years, Sister Luz’s children insisted she get medical help, so she went to doctors in three different cities, but there was nothing they could do for her.

Fearing the worst, she called her grown children to her bedside, said good-bye to them, and distributed her farmland between them. She asked if they would hold a mass for her.

After that, Sister Luz drifted in and out of consciousness for several weeks. At one point, she opened her eyes and saw Jorge, her oldest son, on his knees, crying out to God. He had told her before about finding a personal relationship with Jesus. He said he had been forgiven and had changed, but she didn’t understand what he was talking about.

He had always been a good son. Why did he need to change? she wondered.

She looked around, and realized Jorge wasn’t alone. There was a group of pastors with him and they were all praying.

Then something very unusual happened. “Someone got up from the middle of the brothers and came toward me,” she recalls. “I felt like the person operated on me and took a tumor out of my stomach.”

Was it a man? Was it an angel? Or was it the Lord? Whoever touched her, the result was immediate.

“Starting from that moment, I began recovering miraculously,” Sister Luz says.

Then she realized who brought this extraordinary change. “I understood that GOD HEALED ME! When I was conscious and could speak, I told my son what they had done for me when they were praying. He explained that it was God who healed me, and that the God who healed me is a living and powerful God. My son taught me the plan of salvation, and I received the Lord in my heart. Since that day, my life has never been the same.”

Sister Luz began to attend church, and tried to read the Bible to learn more about Jesus. But her eyesight had deteriorated to such an extent she had to put the Bible down.

“Lord, please have someone create a spoken Bible” became her daily prayer for years.

One day her pastor brought a digital audio player, known as the Proclaimer®, and set it down in front of the church. When he turned it on, Sister Luz began to cry. “I was praying for this,” she said. “God answered my prayers!! Now we need to listen to it at all of our worship services and learn more about God.”

Sister Luz now organizes listening groups, assisted by Faith Comes By Hearing, a Christian ministry based in New Mexico. She says that her audio Bible is extremely helpful for those who are elderly or cannot read.

She also treks through the mountains to bring the Good News to surrounding villages – some miles away. The community calls her La Hermana Luz, or Sister of Light, because she carries the light of God’s Word to those living in darkness.

Her children tell her she shouldn’t take these long trips by herself—it can be dangerous—but she doesn’t listen. She has fallen several times and gotten hurt, but she says she spent the first 50 years of her life not knowing Jesus, and she is determined to spend the rest of her life helping others know Him.

“Even though there are storms, even though the thunder is mighty, even though earthquakes come, I will continue to preach because God is always with me,” she sings on her journeys.

She carries a digital audio player with her on her journeys, and because of her—and hearing God’s Word in their own language—entire families in distant communities have given their lives to the Lord. A man named Pablo was healed of epilepsy and now shares God’s Word with others, and a woman named Magdalena was healed and her family came to Christ.

Sister Luz says, “Faith Comes By Hearing motivated me to take the Word of God with greater confidence because it speaks. I only pray to the Lord, and He does His work.”

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7).

WAXING LYRICAL

One of the greatest misunderstandings of man over the two millennia since Christ has been that you can earn your passage into heaven through being a good person – that is by works alone. The message of Jesus however was that the only way into heaven was through belief in Him – called faith. Perhaps why this poem was given to me.

A GOOD MAN GOES TO HEAVEN?

I met a man, a very good man,
He looked after his family well.
And his son was his greatest fan,
He had no fear of going to hell.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He went to church at Christmas and Easter
And was most generous with donations,
While the pastors words could not be clearer
He’d sit there, in control of his emotions.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He was active in the community,
A man of standing - a Rotarian indeed.
Helping others at every opportunity,
The pillar of hope to those in need.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He had a dear friend, a Moslem brother,
Six times a day facing Mecca he’d pray.
To the God of Abraham, indeed no other,
Of course, he too had found another way.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

Or the man in the jungle, he hadn’t been taught,
He would never have heard of the Jesus word!
Living a good life, doing as he ought,
In no way could he be for the sword!
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

This Jesus man, he was a great guy,
The best role model of all to follow.
Crucified, now living up there in the sky,
But the only way – that rings too hollow.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

The man I met, he suddenly died
His funeral was very well attended.
A pillar of the community the family cried,
Their grief so great, for a life sadly ended.
But surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He took the path to the heavenly gate,
Full of confidence, had nothing to fear,
More than willing to meet his fate,
His ears so eagerly waiting to hear.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

Jesus was waiting there; he’s on the way in!
Then seeing God’s face, hope turned to pain,
What if the requirement was forgiveness of sin?
And repentance the key that brings with it gain.
"But surely God, a good man goes to heaven!"

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life.
No-one comes to the Father except through me."
These words cut through his soul like a knife,
They gutted him, oh how wrong could he be.
"But, I thought a good man goes to heaven!"

"I tell you the truth, I don’t know you", Jesus replied,
The lake of burning sulphur now eternally his fate.
Forever to burn, he cried, "To me the devil has always lied,
Don’t make my mistake – repent now before it’s too late!
For I’ve found out, a good man doesn’t go to heaven!"

I heard the man’s screams - not so far away,
As Satan ever tortures him with his sword.
My sins to Jesus readily confessed that day,
"Thankyou my Jesus, please be my Lord."
Yes surely, a forgiven man goes to heaven!

Thanks to Julian Batchelor for the inspiration of his little black book,
"Why Good People Don’t Go To Heaven".

A DAVID MUSING

YES!!!!! The wait is over. The Lord has fulfilled His promises to me, to us!

For our charity, second hand clothing business, 'Seekers Megamart' has sold! As He promised last December. The new owners take over on 1 October.

Over the past 10 months I have 'pushed doors' but none opened. About 4 weeks ago, on a Friday, the Lord said that the buyer would come 'next week'. I wasn't able (perhaps not brave enough!) to put it up here, but with a mixture of trepidation and excitement, I told Kathy. It could have been a long week!

However, on the Monday afternoon I got an email out of the blue, from a potential buyer I had not approached, but one who had approached us several months earlier with an unsatisfactory offer. A phone call on the Tuesday and a verbal deal was done! The Lord kept His word.

Of course, it has taken this time to complete the written contract and advise staff, landlords and others, what is happening. The last signature was obtained on Friday, so the verbal deal is now a written contract and can be made public. Thank you Lord.

Maybe you are still waiting for your promise to be fulfilled. I trust that the experiences I have shared with you over recent times, both the ups and the downs, will encourage you to hold on to what He has promised you. For He does come through! Thank you Lord.
