HOW 'ATTRACTIVE' ARE YOUR LEADERS?
As I have traveled around churches over the years I have observed that church leadership is generally made up of those who are 'attractive' in the church. Before all decry me with tales of leaders who would break the camera if photographed, let me explain what I mean.
Beauty is not only seen in the body and facial features, in spite of what Hollywood would say. My wife Kathy, for instance, would not have been attracted to me by my good looks! While we men tend to be more superficial in the opposite sex, attraction stakes, women (fortunately for me with Kathy) tend to look a little deeper as to what appeals to them.
So then, what do we look for as desirable qualities when it comes to church leadership?
My observations include, in no particular order:
* Loyal people who will not rock the boat, at least more than gently. Often family or personal friends.
* Successful businessmen.
* People in the church who have money.
* Those who are influential, or are in leadership in other spheres of the community.
* Intelligent and learned people.
* Successful people.
These are very 'sensible' characteristics that one would look for in the operation of any community organization.
But is this the sort of person Jesus chose to build the church?
I think not! His disciples were the 'rabbi's rejects'. A very motley crew. In fact, it is absolutely amazing that the church ever got up and going with such a bunch of hopeless cases. But Jesus saw underneath their skins. With the exception of Judas, whom He chose for other reasons, 10 of the 11 remaining disciples would be prepared to give their lives for Him in martyrdom. John, the exception, in tradition, was boiled in oil, and of course, exiled to the hell hole of Patmos. Peter denied Him, Thomas doubted Him, but both died for Him.
The exception was the 'true' 12th apostle, Paul. He was typical of those we would today appoint to church leadership. Zealous for the rabbinical church, hugely intelligent, educated and respected in society as a high achiever.
But what had to happen to Paul before he was to become useful to God. He was blinded, stripped of his dignity, retrained for 2 years in God's ways, told how much he had to suffer and finally, given a 'thorn in His side' for life, to keep him humble. Only then was he ready for service.
The Jews had a habit of appointing the wrong people to lead them, for they naturally looked at this from a human perspective too. Initially they chose King Saul, with bad consequences, before God chose David, a man after His own heart.
Right through to the time of Jesus, this human attitude prevailed, as can be seen in the disagreement between Martha and Mary.
When looking at those God has used from the Reformation onwards, most were seemingly insignificant people, yet 'in tune' with God and available to do His will rather than their own.
So it still is today. I constantly see those who are sold out to God, yet have been rejected by the conventional church as unsuitable for leadership. Mostly ordinary people, certainly not superstars in a human sense, but with a deep spiritual understanding and close relationship with God. Frustrated and misunderstood within the church, many finally leave, generally to leadership's relief, to do God's work on a one to one basis in the community.
Pastors, leaders of churches, I ask you today to consider whether you have any David's or Mary's in your church, whom you have rejected for leadership. Maybe some will make you uncomfortable and challenge the traditional way of doing things. Just maybe too, as with the original disciples of Jesus, that is what God desires!

FROM THE WORD
"Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will do: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day.†But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!†they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.†When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.†Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go back to his town.†There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the others." (1 Samuel 8:10-9:2)"The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.†But Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me.†The LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.†Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?†Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.†Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.†But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.†Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.†Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen this one.†Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.†So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?†“There is still the youngest,†Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.†Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.†So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.†So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah." (1 Samuel 16:1-13)
"Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?†“Who are you, Lord?†Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,†he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.†The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!†“Yes, Lord,†he answered. The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.†“Lord,†Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.†But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.†Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.†Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength." (Acts 9:1-19a)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
LEADERSHIP156. In God, being led to lead is a calling. Leading when not led, guarantees an appalling mauling!
157. A Christian leader is but an ordinary person called to an extraordinary task. Both leaders and the led need to be reminded of this!
158. Worldly leadership builds up self, but godly leadership builds up others.
159. In God, understanding and sharing vulnerabilities is a sign of maturity and success, not an acknowledgement of failure.
160. In God, if you’re not led to lead, you’ll be bled to death.
161. To lead or be led? The difference is ‘a’ for attitude!
162. Only God has the required glue to attach ‘super’ to ‘natural’.
372. To be a leader in the world is difficult, in the church, impossible. However, with God's help, we can do the impossible.
373. God loves obedient leaders.
374. Leaders are not God - for only God is perfect.
375. Our leaders are not God substitutes. They too, make mistakes, just as we do.
376. Truly godly leaders are more precious than diamonds - and equally hard to find.
377. The Bible tells us that there is only one God. Some leaders need to be reminded of this fact.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35Jesus wept. 36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. (John 11:32-34)The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

619. MICROSOFT BIDS TO ACQUIRE CATHOLIC CHURCH
VATICAN CITY (AP) -- In a joint press conference in St. Peter's Square this morning, MICROSOFT Corp. and the Vatican announced that the Redmond software giant will acquire the Roman Catholic Church in exchange for an unspecified number of shares of MICROSOFT common stock. If the deal goes through, it will be the first time a computer software company has acquired a major world religion.
With the acquisition, Pope John Paul II will become the senior vice-president of the combined company's new Religious Software Division, while MICROSOFT senior vice-presidents Michael Maples and Steven Ballmer will be invested in the College of Cardinals, said MICROSOFT Chairman Bill Gates.
"We expect a lot of growth in the religious market in the next five to ten years," said Gates. "The combined resources of MICROSOFT and the Catholic Church will allow us to make religion easier and more fun for a broader range of people."
Through the MICROSOFT Network, the company's new on-line service, "we will make the sacraments available on-line for the first time" and revive the popular pre-Counter-Reformation practice of selling indulgences, said Gates. "You can get Communion, confess your sins, receive absolution -- even reduce your time in Purgatory -- all without leaving your home."
A new software application, MICROSOFT Church, will include a macro language which you can program to download heavenly graces automatically while you are away from your computer.
An estimated 17,000 people attended the announcement in St Peter's Square, watching on a 60-foot screen as comedian Don Novello -- in character as Father Guido Sarducci -- hosted the event, which was broadcast by satellite to 700 sites worldwide.
Pope John Paul II said little during the announcement. When Novello chided Gates, "Now I guess you get to wear one of these pointy hats," the crowd roared, but the pontiff's smile seemed strained.
The deal grants MICROSOFT exclusive electronic rights to the Bible and the Vatican's prized art collection, which includes works by such masters as Michelangelo and Da Vinci. But critics say MICROSOFT will face stiff challenges if it attempts to limit competitors' access to these key intellectual properties.
"The Jewish people invented the look and feel of the holy scriptures," said Rabbi David Gottschalk of Philadelphia. "You take the parting of the Red Sea -- we had that thousands of years before the Catholics came on the scene."
But others argue that the Catholic and Jewish faiths both draw on a common Abrahamic heritage. "The Catholic Church has just been more successful in marketing it to a larger audience," notes Notre Dame theologian Father Kenneth Madigan. Over the last 2,000 years, the Catholic Church's market share has increased dramatically, while Judaism, which was the first to offer many of the concepts now touted by Christianity, lags behind.
Historically, the Church has a reputation as an aggressive competitor, leading crusades to pressure people to upgrade to Catholicism, and entering into exclusive licensing arrangements in various kingdoms whereby all subjects were instilled with Catholicism, whether or not they planned to use it. Today Christianity is available from several denominations, but the Catholic version is still the most widely used. The Church's mission is to reach "the four corners of the earth," echoing MICROSOFT's vision of "a computer on every desktop and in every home".
Gates described MICROSOFT's long-term strategy to develop a scalable religious architecture that will support all religions through emulation. A single core religion will be offered with a choice of interfaces according to the religion desired -- "One religion, a couple of different implementations," said Gates.
The MICROSOFT move could spark a wave of mergers and acquisitions, according to Herb Peters, a spokesman for the U.S. Southern Baptist Conference, as other churches scramble to strengthen their position in the increasingly competitive religious market.

238. CLUMSY BEEThere was the clumsy bee who came down with a cold. As determined as ever, however, the bee gathered its pollen, only to drop it time and time again, so it had to visit quite a few flowers before it was able to hold on to the pollen. Sadly, though, it spread its illness to every single flower. That became known as the blight of the fumble bee.

STANDING IN THE GAP - A REQUEST
Thanks for your regular blessings.I know you have a far-reaching ministry. I'd appreciate it if you could pass a word along on your lists.
On Saturday, October 4, 1997, there was a sacred assembly of men on the Capital Mall in Washington, DC. We praised our God, We worshiped. We asked forgiveness of our God for all the wrong that our nation had done. Estimates of the number of attendees range from 750,000 to 1,400,000. But there was only One who mattered. And we all knew that our Lord God came and was pleased. It was called Stand in the Gap.
Since that time, we have lost our way. Now there is discontent around the land. We no longer hold are doing God's will. We have returned to doing our own. It is time once again for us to repent, and give ourselves again to our Lord.
Stand in the Gap 2007 is a grass roots effort to return on October 6, 2007, at the time of the 10th anniversary of the last sacred assembly to pray once again for our nation. We pray that by doing so, we can pass on this legacy to our children, and every ten years, we will continue to meet on the Capital Mall in Washington, DC in sight of the White House, and the US Capital, and pray for our nation.

CHORES MORE IMPORTANT THAN CHILDREN
Many Americans are concerned about the increasing rift between marriage and raising children, according to a recent poll by the Pew Research Centre. Even though marriage rates and people's perceptions of the value of marriage have changed, most people surveyed were concerned about the number of children born to unmarried parents and the majority still believed that a child needs both a mother and a father to grow up happily. However, people in the survey did not prioritise children in the answers to all questions. The number of people who indicated that children were very important in a marriage has declined from 65 percent in 1990 to 41 percent today. Also, while having children was ranked number three on a list of nine priorities that make a successful marriage in 1990, today it ranks second to last, behind factors such as "sharing household chores," "adequate income" and a "happy sexual relationship." The survey also showed that 65 percent of respondents believed the main purpose of marriage was the mutual happiness and fulfilment of the spouses while 23 percent thought the main purpose of marriage was making a union for bearing and raising children. The remainder of respondents believed that the main purpose of marriage was both or neither of these options.
Although this survey shows that Americans still think that marriage is important for children and, in the abstract, that it is best for people with children to be married, this does not seem to filter down into their personal actions or into what they view as priorities for marriage. Overall it seems there has been a cultural shift in the way Americans view marriage; while the family used to be viewed more as a unified whole, today it appears to be viewed in a more compartmentalised manner. Marriage is important to most people, as are children, but not necessarily in the same way that they used to be. Because marriage is associated with a range of benefits for children, and divorce can place children at risk in many ways, the challenge for the future will be to help equip people with the tools to make their aspirations for marriage a reality and to realise the centrality of children in such a vision.

WAXING LYRICAL
The inspiration for the first two parts of this poem came from a cross-island trek Kathyand I went on when we were staying on the beautiful Island of Rarotonga, in the Cook
Islands. For those who don’t know, The Cooks are situated around the Tropic of Capricorn
in the Pacific Ocean. A great place to visit! The last part is based loosely on the book
of Revelation, Chapters 21 and 22, the biblical promise of what is to come. Hope it is
both enjoyable and challenging to you. Of course it is just verse, so is not all strictly
theologically accurate! Called poetic licence! My longest poem too, so will print it in small bits!
VICTORY! (Part 8)
UNDER THE WATERFALL
Slapping at one, then another, then a third!
Slap, slap, slap, until that voice again I heard
Coming from deep inside me, so gently saying,
“Jump back in, it’s with me you should be staying.â€
A few more slaps before learning my lesson,
Wiser now, back into the pool I do hasten!
In the refreshing water my bites do soon disappear,
The Spirit, in the right direction, would me steer.
In him, by now, I was coming to trust,
Just as Jesus earlier, had said I must.
For such a slow learner I am sometimes,
Until my head clicks, then the bell chimes!
So once again enjoying the play,
Happy to go on from day to day,
But I have to admit to becoming a little bored,
“Surely there has to be moreâ€, my inside roared!
To be continued over the weeks ahead.

A DAVID MUSING
It is really interesting how criticism is so much more easily given than congratulations! Last week I unwittingly instituted a competition between my 60th birthday and a bad mistake I inadvertently made in the BIBLE TRIVIA section.Yes, you have guessed it! I got more comments and complaints about my slip up than birthday congratulations (or commiserations) from readers! Says something about human nature!
One congrats though, included, "Birthday greetings – remember you are only as old as you feel." Well, on Monday I had a sore back after shifting some very heavy bales of clothes! But it is better now and I have gone again from 80 to 20! Thank you Rezea, for making my email day! And thanks too, to those others who wrote, and for Shirley's 'cheeky' e-card!
Rezea went on to say I hope you have a good day with Kathy spoiling you. Well, Kathy sure did! She arranged for us to spend the night before my birthday, and birthday morning, at a 5 star hotel in our nearby city of Napier. Dinner, bed and breakfast. A real surprise! Thank you doll for going 'over the top' in spoiling me! And to Graeme and Jude for sharing dinner with us.
Now it's back to reality! All good things (fortunately) must come to an end - or else we would get too used to them! Then they would simply become ordinary! For again, that too, is our human nature!
Until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
