THE POWER OF THE CALL (continued)

To get the people involved in doing the work requires an understanding that the kingdom of God is not found in a church building, pastor or programme, but within the individual believer. This truth has been known and lost, known and lost, many times over, since the time of Jesus.

The other day, I was coming to the end of once again reading the Bible from cover to cover. At the end of Revelation chapter 21, I read with new eyes of understanding;

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation 21:22-7)

The kingdom is so beautifully described here! It has no temple, no building, no church. It is lit by the glory of God and Jesus. In turn, we too are to be the reflection of the light of Christ to others;

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1 John1:7)

for we are the kingdom on earth, a shadow of what is to come, but bearers of the light nevertheless.

For the people to become fully personally involved in 'doing the work', this understanding of the kingdom within is required.

Experience has taught me kingdom living CAN'T be imparted

* in large groups, or

* by paid professionals.

Christianity is relational. You cannot be relational sitting in a pew listening to a sermon on a Sunday.

Nor can the kingdom be effectively implanted by a professional priesthood to whom the people cannot easily relate, or to whom they pass off the responsibility for their spiritual wellbeing.

Kingdom living CAN be imparted

* to people individually or in small groups through interactive relationship, or

* by ordinary people with whom one can identify.

The kingdom is spread by osmosis through sharing living experiences, not by listening to sermons once or twice a week, no matter how masterful their presentation may be.

The House Church movement grew out of this understanding. Small, relational groups, sharing one with another. Unfortunately though, many house churches have become mini churches, where one person dominates the procecdings and the whole process becomes informally formalised!

It is not until we get rid of all placing people on a pedestal because of their spiritual gifts and understanding and communicate on an equal level, sharing our successes and failures, and letting the Holy Spirit operate as He wishes in the group, that we will build a kingdom people prepared to do works of service, as the Bible instructs.

Enthusiasm is built through relational involvement and personal encouragement, not through professional preaching.

Interestingly, Jesus is generally regarded as the greatest teacher, not preacher. While there is considerable emphasis on preaching the Word, Jesus was strident that we must 'practise what we preach'! The professional preacher Pharisees came in for particular criticism.

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. (Luke 11:42)

Teachers, experts, also came in for criticism.

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” (Luke 11:52)

I would leave you with the description of one group in Australia that is endevouring to avoid these problems. The writer, David Orton, is a leading Australian prophet, but is shown here simply, as another follower of Jesus.

THE VINE

‘The Vine’ here in Mt Eliza, Melbourne continues to experiment with a deconstructed simple expression of church. We have no building, no pastors, no titles, no budgets – but an emerging microcosm of the body of Christ functioning as people who love and care for one another. With no paid pastoral professionals they are doing the work of ministry – wow, it almost sounds biblical (aka Eph 4 stuff).

Not easy! Radical! But something to ponder upon.

Kingdom living is built through relationship, with Jesus and one another.

FROM THE WORD

The New Jerusalem
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. He measured its wall and it was 144 cubits thick, by man’s measurement, which the angel was using. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass. I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life." (Revelation 21:1-27)

Walking in the Light
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him." (1 John 1:5-11)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE

448. Human knowledge corrupts. Absolute knowledge corrupts absolutely.

449. Knowledge seeks truth but only God can reveal the truth.

450. Truth provides the foundation upon which the house of knowledge should be built.

451. Knowledge is relative, truth absolute. Problems arise when we confuse the two.

452. If I have all knowledge in the world but have not the truth, I am as nothing.

453. Computers are able to process endless knowledge, but only humans can discern truth.

454. God created mankind to live in His truth. Satan’s temptation is to live in earthly knowledge. Which will we choose?

455. Satan was the first to substitute knowledge for truth. His plan hasn’t changed.

456. Knowledge is subject to rust and decay, but truth is golden.

457. Seek knowledge to wander, but truth to wonder at God’s great glory.

458. Worldly knowledge fills our brain, but godly understanding fulfils our life.

459. All the knowledge in the world will be of no worth on the Day of Judgement.

460. Knowledge puffs up, truth humbles.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. (Acts 9:1-9)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

4. TRUMPED!
There were two rich brothers who looked great on the outside, even attending church regularly, but whose hearts were evil.

A new, more astute pastor arrived at the church. The congregation grew and a fund raising campaign was started to extend the church.

All of a sudden, one of the brothers died. The day before the funeral the remaining brother sidled up to the pastor and gave him a cheque for the full amount needed to complete the extensions. “Just one condition,” he said. At the funeral you must say that my brother was a saint.”

The pastor gave him his word and deposited the cheque.

The next day, at the funeral, the pastor let it all go. “He was an evil man,” he said, hard on his wife and family, corrupt in business,” and on and on. He concluded, “but, compared to his brother, he was a saint.”

3. THE BEST INTENTIONS OF MINISTERS AND MEN…..
The noted Evangelist arrived in the city to conduct a series of crusades. At his Press Conference the day before the first meeting, he asked the reporters not to report the examples he quoted to them, as he wished to use them in his meetings.

The next day’s paper came out with a fine story on the meetings to start that very day and concluded, “The Evangelist also told a number of stories that cannot be repeated!” (One way of ensuring a good attendance! DJT)

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is a ‘red dog’?

ANSWER: It all depends! If you're talking about American football, a ‘red
dog’ is an old term for a gridiron play in which defensive players rush the
quarterback for a quick tackle. (Called a ‘blitz’ today.) In finance, ‘red dog’
was a nineteenth-century term for a kind of bank note stamped with red
ink. At cards, a ‘red dog’ is a game in which each player holds five cards
and bets that he holds the higher card than the top card remaining on the
deck. Finally, ‘red dog’ or ‘red dog flour’ refers to the lowest grade of flour
in milling, which is generally used to feed farm animals. (Black, brown
and white dogs now feel quite left out!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is May Day a pagan holiday or a worker's
holiday?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

431. SUBTLE ADVERTISING
The name of the statuette atop the hood of every Rolls Royce car is ‘The Spirit of Ecstasy’. (Oh, the agony of the Ecstasy being stolen!)

432. ALREADY PRESERVED
Undertakers report that human bodies do not deteriorate as quickly as they used to. The reason being that the modern diet contains so many preservatives that these chemicals tend to prevent the body from decomposing too rapidly after death. (Do they also serve to keep us alive longer though? That is the real question.)

433. SOFT AND LOUD
The name 'piano' is an abbreviation of Cristofori's original name for the instrument: 'piano et forte', or soft and loud. (The delight of those who listen to a virtuoso, the bane of those forced to practice in the remote hope of becoming one!)

BIBLE TRIVIA

ABRAHAM WAS 'RICH IN CATTLE"...

according to the King James Version of the Bible in Genesis 13:2.

In the early books of the Bible however, the word 'cattle' is believed often to refer to sheep and goats rather than cows. This has been changed in later translations.

No more waiting,

Deal is done!
Now the fun!
Getting started,
Waiting departed.

Thank you so much Lord!

Deal's too good to be true!

A DAVID MUSING

This week I have taken the weekend off to go with my youngest son to the motor races, in another town around 150Km from here. Father/son bonding! That is my excuse! Certainly not saving the planet!

In order to go I have had to do all my ezines in advance. Normally they are done on the accountancy stocking principle of 'just in time' writing!

I guess that most of us live our lives by a similar principle of doing what we need to do just before it is needed.

When it comes to spiritual matters however, this is not so advisable! For a start, we don't know what time we have. And while, like the thief on the cross, we can receive last minute salvation, those who have been obedient to the Lord's will over an extended period, will receive the greater reward. Many Christians do not understand this.

While I am far from perfect (surely there will be motor racing in heaven!) I have come to the conclusion that I will serve Jesus to the best of my ability now. How about you?

Until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
