TRANSFORMATION OF THE CHURCH: 3. FROM KINGS TO KINGDOM (continued)

Last week I was sharing that the Lord did not provide directly for the support of this ministry. The money we live on comes from my wife Kathy's earnings as a nurse.

As I finished, I mentioned that just recently, after many hears of wondering why, the Lord had shown me that because we are not reliant upon keeping supporters happy, in order that their contributions might continue, we can share the Word without fear or favour.

The Word of REPENTANCE. The Word of HOLINESS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS. The Word of COMMITTMENT. The Word of DISCIPLESHIP. The Word of SACRIFICE. The words of the KINGDOM rather than the words of KINGS.

For the KINGDOM is fully centred around God and His desires while KINGS have to place the needs and desires of their followers first in order to keep them, and retain their position of kingship.

So it is understandable then, why very many churches are loath to co-operate one with another, for leadership desire to protect their membership base is a priority above all else. It takes a truly enlightened, kingdom oriented leader, to put this protectionism to one side in order to work for the overall extension of the kingdom, even if it does cost money or involve the loss of membership.

It has been proven time and time again that the most effective way of evangelising is to set up new groups, new 'churches'. For new, smaller groups, have enthusiasm, and the desire and ability to reach out into their communities. Yet so few churches are prepared to make the sacrifice of losing their 'best and brightest', their most enthusiastic members, in order to set up a new work.

As for me, I can share these thoughts with you - which you can accept or reject - without having to worry where my next meal is coming from.

You see, we have a concept of 'church' that is at variance with what is seen in the New Testament. We see 'church' as a gathering of people led by a pastor, minister or priest, ideally with our own building, carrying out programmes based either within or emanating from, our building.

When we think of a church along the lines of being, 'Pastor Fred's church that meets in the church building on High Street.' This is kingly thinking, based upon the kingship of Fred with his territory being the church building and his 'subjects' being the church membership.

However this is not God's way.

For God's New Testament church is simply RELATIONAL. Relational in 3 ways.

Firstly, with God Himself. God is not found in pastor, building or programmes.

Jesus came as the final fulfillment, the replacement of the failed Aaronic priesthood. His sacrificial death upon the cross made Him the final mediator, intercessor, intermediary between you and me and God.

11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? (Hebrews 7:11)

There are to be no more priests. No more kings. Only King Jesus! Our relationship is with the Father Himself, through, and only through, Jesus. Thank you Lord!

Nor is God found in a building.

48 “However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. As the prophet says:
49 ”‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? 50 Has not my hand made all these things?’ 51 “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! (Acts 7:48-51)

Pastor Fred does not have a church. Only God is to have HIS church.

Yet we too, like the people then, so often desire to return to the old ways of priesthood and buildings, ignoring the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Programmes are the result of a kingly based system's need to be seen to be doing something, in order to justify a the king's and the organisation's existence. Programmes generally formalise and replace personal relationships. We are instructed to look after the widows and orphans and to feed the poor, to assist the less advantaged among us. While food banks are good, the most effective way of showing our love is still on a personal level.

We will continue with the 2 remaining relational aspects next week.

(Testimony to be continued next week)

FROM THE WORD

JESUS LIKE MELCHIZEDEK

"If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law. He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. For it is declared: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’” Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever." (Hebrews 7:11-28)

" “But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made. But God turned away and gave them over to the worship of the heavenly bodies. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets: ”‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? You have lifted up the shrine of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile’ beyond Babylon. “Our forefathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the desert. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. Having received the tabernacle, our fathers under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David, who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built the house for him. “However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. As the prophet says: ”‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things?’ “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it.”" (Acts 7:39-53)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

SERVANTHOOOD

561. It is better to be ‘led’ by God than ’bled’ by life.

562. In God, to obey is the better way.

563. Our Christian walk in a ‘t’ – from rust to trust!

564. To serve is to…
… love the unlovely
… help the helpless
… befriend the lonely
… rebuild the brokenhearted
… soothe the sick
… bless the poor
… raise up the downtrodden
… seek the lost
… comfort the dying

565. True servants add their own desires to the end of the queue.

566. Pride demolishes, while servanthood builds.

567. Leaders of character understand the twin character difference between serve and slave.

568. To serve is God initiated, to slave, human imposed.

569. A servant serves by choice, a slave through fear.

570. For down to be up, up must first be down.

571. A ‘servant leader’ is beyond the world’s comprehension. And many Christians too!

572. To serve is a privilege, to abuse the server, a sacrilege.

573. Show me a true servant and I will show you one whom God truly loves.

574. To abuse God’s servant is to abuse God himself.

575. Maturity in God is learning that service is a privilege, not a burden.

576. The firepower of God’s Army is ‘service’.

577. Service is the invincible secret weapon of God’s Army.

578. ‘Service with a smile’ means to ‘go the extra mile.’

579. The world works by taking away, God by giving away.

580. To go down to go up is logical. Ask a bouncy ball!

581. To serve is a blessing, to lead a challenge. To be a servant leader, a challenging blessing!

582. A theologian thinks, a worshiper feels, a servant acts.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON

THE CALLING OF THE FIRST DISCIPLES
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

741. TOUCHE!
After listening restlessly to a long and tedious sermon, a 6-year-old boy asked his father what the preacher did the rest of the week. "Oh he's a very busy man," the father replied. "He takes care of church business, visits the sick, ministers to the poor.... And then he has to have time to rest up. Talking in public isn't an easy job, you know."

"The boy thought about that, then said, "Well, listening ain't easy, either."

740. OOPS!
At the beginning of a children's sermon, one girl came up to the altar wearing a beautiful dress. As the children are sitting down around the pastor, the pastor leans over and says to the girl, "That is a very pretty dress. Is it your Easter dress?"

The girl replies almost directly into the pastor's clip-on mike, "Yes.... and my Mom says it's a bitch to iron."

SOME FUN FACTS

513. FLYING SQUARE
The Swiss flag is square. (But generally doesn’t have holes in it, as does their cheese.)

514. BE PREPARED
A golden razor removed from the tomb of King Tutankhamen (1336 - 1327 BC) was still sharp enough to be used. (As he was murdered when only 18, he may not have had much use out of it!)

515. CAN'T CURDLE
Camel’s milk doesn’t curdle. (Now know why we can’t buy ‘camel milk yoghurt’.)

Praying for Success in Shanghai

Shanghai - On a gray Sunday morning, some 800 people are crammed into Thanksgiving Church in Shanghai. Among the congregants is Wang Cuimei, a 21-year-old from a village in northern China. She just started working at Semiconductor Manufacturing International, whose headquarters are down the street. While Wang isn't a Christian, she decided to attend the service after hearing about it from the leader of her new-employee training program.

It didn't hurt that top SMIC executives had helped set up the church. "The leaders care about us," Wang says. "Apparently everyone is a Christian, so we wanted to take a look." Adds her friend Liang Shuihong, 21: "We have a responsibility and a duty as employees to go." So the pair made the five-minute walk to the church from their SMIC dorm. Following a sermon from the government-approved pastor and much singing of hymns (with Chinese lyrics projected onto giant screens suspended from the ceiling), Wang says she is impressed and plans to return. "There is a lot of kindness in this place," she says.

That's good news for Richard Chang, the Taiwanese-American chief executive of SMIC. Chang, who eschews the expensive suits, flashy watches, and other bling favored by China's new business class, says spreading the gospel is a key part of his work. He and his colleagues "were called to China to share God's love," Chang says. That sort of talk is rare in a country ruled by a Communist Party that is officially atheist and has a long history of hostility toward Christianity. Yet Chang, 60, feels no hesitation in describing the role his faith plays in his business life. "The Lord says, 'Do good things to those in need,'" he says.

Chang could use some help himself. He spent nearly three decades at Texas Instruments (TXN) and other semiconductor companies before launching SMIC in 2000. Since then, he has built the company into China's largest chipmaker, with operations in five cities, and the world's No. 3 foundry, or contract manufacturer of semiconductors. But even with a slew of A-list customers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Toshiba (TOSBF), Broadcom (BRCM), and Freescale, Chang has struggled to make the company profitable. SMIC lost $19.5 million on sales of $1.5 billion last year, and its New York-traded American depositary receipts have dropped more than 80% since the company's initial public offering in 2004.
HELP FROM ABOVE?

Righting the ship is now Chang's biggest business challenge. In April, SMIC announced it had phased out memory chips, which once contributed a majority of the company's revenue, because it's so difficult to turn a profit in that cyclical business. Instead, SMIC is focusing more on higher-end chips. In December the company signed a deal to license advanced chip manufacturing technology from IBM (IBM). And SMIC says it's talking with potential strategic investors interested in taking a stake in the company to help fund new, multibillion-dollar chip plants. "We knew there would be challenges [in China], but we knew the Lord would help us to solve the difficulties," Chang says.

Chang's efforts are part of a growing focus on China by evangelical Christians from the West. Although Beijing requires all congregations to adhere to a one-size-fits-all Protestant church that doesn't differentiate among Methodists, Baptists, or others, there are signs that evangelicals are gaining popularity. Geoff Tunnicliffe, CEO of the World Evangelical Alliance, traveled to China in April, and Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son and heir, gave a Sunday sermon in May to 12,000 people in the eastern city of Hangzhou.

Few mix the Bible and business as openly as Chang. He helped fund the church in Shanghai—which opened on Christmas Day 2005—and several others across the country.

He emphasizes that the money is his own, not SMIC's, and says the company doesn't force anyone to attend services. "If they want to know more about Christianity," he says, "we encourage them." Pastor Shen Xuebin, associate general secretary of the Shanghai Christian Council, the government body that oversees official Protestant congregations in the city, stresses that it wasn't SMIC that built the Thanksgiving Church. "China's church," he says, "built this church."

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP

Chang, who says he was born again as a teenager in Taiwan, has helped draw many other evangelicals to Shanghai. Matthew Szymanski, an evangelical Christian who joined SMIC in 2007 after working as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill for the Republican House leadership, estimates there are 1,000 Christians among the company's 12,000 employees, including "a substantial minority" of top managers. For instance David Lin, senior director of chip design services, became a Christian in 1993 while working for AT&T Bell Labs in Pennsylvania. Lin and his wife have been active in various churches since arriving in Shanghai in 2002. "Our decision to come to China was primarily because we hope to spread the Gospel," he says.

Pastor Shen says he's happy to get support from Chang and other SMIC executives. There's no conflict, he says, between the Party's goals and what the Christians are doing. "We are contributing to economic reforms," says Shen. Adds Chang: "The government realizes the value of good religion." Indeed, for a government that antagonizes the Vatican by appointing its own bishops, suppresses the indigenous Falun Gong religious movement, and vilifies the Dalai Lama, there might even be some propaganda benefits in courting Chang and his Christian community at SMIC.

Still, religion is a sensitive subject, and Chang makes it clear that his good works aren't just church-related. He has, for instance, funded schools and set up training programs for young SMIC workers, and the company donated $140,000 to victims of the May earthquake in central China. He boasts that SMIC was one of the first Chinese companies to provide psychological counseling services for employees. And SMIC offers stock and options to every worker. "With the Lord's blessing, we believe that stock options may significantly benefit employees," he says. And if more of those employees drop by Thanksgiving Church on Sunday mornings, all the better.

WAXING LYRICAL

An introduction to the weird world of David Tait! You may like him (me – this is confusing!) or you may not, but he (I!) is what he is. (I am!) Written around nine years ago as an introduction to the book 'Eagles Fly High'. Am not the same person now, I trust. Hope I have grown up more in Him, not just grown older in myself!

'TIS ME' (Continued)

So when I come to read a book,
I always want to take a real look,
At the life of the person who pushes the pen,
What is he thinking, while writing in his den?

Now here you will find David’s Musings,
Over which I have taken some ‘abusings’!
Why are you focusing on yourself? Some do say,
Others, revealing yourself, a dangerous game to play!

But life is a journey my friend,
To be run out to the very end.
To see where I’m at, on the way through,
Will I trust, be of some benefit to you.

Now you may well not, be used to my style,
I have many faults, not just one in a while!
Have endeavoured to be as open as I can be,
What you see here, good and bad, it’s reality!

I normally seek to build a logical case,
On which my conclusions, then to base.
So if at the start, you know you’ve heard it all before,
Don’t give up! By the end, there’s far more in store!

As you read through, you may notice some change,
Being young in the Lord, I am to give him full range,
So if you aren’t too keen on the person you first meet,
Read on, by the end, you may find a new one to greet.

So now, that is a little of the story of my life,
For the full version, you need to ask the wife!
One day I hope we will meet in Heaven,
All our failings healed, no sin, no leaven!

A DAVID MUSING

The pace of life has increased further this week as we prepare the Hasting's shop for opening in 10 days time.

Kathy too, has been busy helping her mother in her successful recovery from her operation 160km away, as well as working here! So we have been birds passing in the night!

This is okay for a limited time, but in our busier and busier world it is all too easy to get immersed in the urgent, and relationships take a battering. Both human and with God.

Kathy and I had a 'date' on Saturday evening. We went together in our truck on a 5 hour return delivery trip of clothing to our Wairoa shop! Upon our return we had a very late dinner!

It does seem such a long time since Jesus lived and life was carried on at a much slower pace. Paul would go somewhere for up to 2 years, while we do well to spend 2 days on a ministry visit! Two weeks is a huge time!

But in 10 days the shop will be open and all will settle down again.

Until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

ABOUT US

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
