TRANSFORMATION OF THE CHURCH: 1. RESTORATION OF HOLY SPIRIT POWER AND DIRECTION Continued (Part 4)

How then, do we get the Holy Spirit to show up in our gatherings?

The key is very simple in theory but often difficult to achieve in practice.

Experience has shown me the key is desire.

There are 2 aspects here. In a church or large group situation, the Holy Spirit is looking for acceptance from

1. LEADERSHIP: Nearly all pastors and leaders would say that they desire the Holy Spirit's presence in their meetings. But would they - would you - really? Are you prepared to have your well ordered plans for a fantastic service, ones that you have put so much time, prayer and preparation into during the week, disrupted? Are you prepared to forgo your wonderful sermon in order to let the Holy Spirit minister? Are you prepared to let things get out of your control? And the biggy - are you prepared to forgo tithes and offerings this week because the Holy Spirit has left no room for them in His, likely in your eyes, extremely disorganised, order of service?

When traveling and speaking, I get to go to lots of different churches. Most want what the Lord has to offer through me or they wouldn't have invited me. As I mentioned last week, the Holy Spirit normally blesses both me and the group with His presence at these times. However, there are occasional occasions when the leadership of the church involved see things getting 'out of control', from their perspective, and find an excuse to step in to take it back. Very sadly, you can literally feel the Holy Spirit immediately depart.

2. THE PEOPLE: As a congregation, we are mostly very comfortable coming along to church for 1 or 2 hours a week to 'do our duty' to God, or maybe our church. We actually quite like order as it is predictable and comfortable, particularly if it speeds up proceedings so that we can more quickly get on with the next activity of the day. Very often, this is where our brain is. It is often hard to switch off the world and onto God. I am no different. This morning (Sunday) I went to church but found it so difficult to switch off from the 16 hour days I have been working for the past fortnight getting africa arise up and running. It is work for God, work He has requested me to do, but it is not relating to God through the Holy Spirit, as He desires me to do. To simply spend time with Him and let Him minister to me.

Again, I have ministered in churches where the people are not interested in the presence of the Holy Spirit being in their midst. I may deliver the same word that the Holy Spirit has come in power to in another church, but because the people are not open to His presence, He simply doesn't show up.

SMALL GROUPS: Once again, experience has taught me that The Holy Spirit generally turns up more powerfully in smaller groups than in larger ones. The likely reasons here are firstly, they are generally less structured, often with informal leadership only.

Secondly, the people who attend are generally 'keener believers' who have a greater desire for the things of the Spirit. The group is likely to have lees formal expectations of how the meeting should be run and are therefore, more open to the Spirit's intervention.

The desire for the presence of the Holy Spirit in both leadership and people is a key to His appearance.

To be continued next week.

FROM THE WORD

PAUL IN EPHESUS

"While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all. Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.” He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer. (Acts 19:1-21)

"Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil." (1 Thessalonian 5:19-22)

"Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”" (Acts 2:38-9)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

MINISTRY

1194. A key difference between the Old and New Testaments is that we are now all in ministry. How easy it is to forget this!

1195. Ministry is not simply for the professionals, but the call upon all believers.

1196. The most effective ministry of all, is our life!

1197. The world's most effective ministry is unspoken! For it is our life!

1198. If all our talk was turned into action, the whole world would have been converted many times over!

1199. Mature ministry is based upon actions rather than words.

1200. Ministry truly is a corporate responsibility.

1201. To be called to minister is both an honour, and the responsibility of us all.

1202. The temptation for professional ministry is to become priests rather than servants.

1203. Ministry, put simply, is being Jesus to others.

1204. Ministry is the call upon us all!

'SEEKERS'MEGAMART by africa arise opens Friday!

As you can see from the photo, progress is being made in setting up our new shop called 'SEEKERS MEGAMART' by africa arise.

Progress had to be made as opening day is next Friday, 26 October!

With 20,000 items to hang and label it takes a huge amount of effort by a small but faithful band of people. Hand strengthening exercises come free as 40,000 staples are pressed in through price labels!

Even I have lost half a stone in the past week, having worked strenuously for very long hours. I need to keep it up for another few weeks to get my weight right down! Clothes, which seem light when we wear them, are very heavy in bulk, I can assure you!

We would really appreciate your prayers this week, as we make the final preparations for opening day. Also for plenty of customers to turn up too!

If you are going to be in the Napier area on Friday, or later, come in and visit us at Kenny Avenue, Ahuriri (Beside the Bypass) and help us help others less fortunate, help themselves. We open at 10am and will be trading Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Now, back to work!

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

651. FREUDIAN SLIP
One day there was a priest sitting in a pew with a very worried and nervous look, and a another priest saw him and wondered what was wrong. The second priest thought he should try to help, so he approached his distraught associate and asked him what was wrong. "Well" the first priest said, "have you ever heard of a Freudian Slip?" "No," said the other priest.

"Well" said the first priest, "it's when one slips and says something one is thinking usually when it is the least opportune time." "Oh," said the second priest, "so, what happened?" "Well, today I performed a wedding and you know the part when you say 'I now pronounce you man and wife'?" asked the first priest.

"Yes?" said the second priest. "Well that is what I meant to say, and what I actually said was, "I now sentence you to death."

650. HOW TRUE
A child was watching his mother sift through and delete a long list of junk E-mail on the computer screen. "This reminds me of the Lord's Prayer," the child said.

"What do you mean?"

"You know. That part about 'deliver us from E-mail.' "

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Are there really such things as elephant graveyards?

ANSWER: Elephants do not really have 'graveyards,' but field workers
and other people occasionally encounter several unexplained elephant
skeletons in one location. Once, people believed these places were
elephant graveyards. These people speculated that elephants could
sense when they were going to die and took themselves to graveyards
just before their deaths.

Another, more probable explanation sees the ‘graveyards’ as a result of
the elephant's teeth. Elephants wear out their molars from eating coarse
vegetation. And, after an elephant has worn out six sets of molars, no
more molars grow in to replace the old ones. As the last set of molars
wears down to nubs, old elephants frequently retreat to swamps to fend
off starvation by eating soft water plants. Eventually, these animals do
die, though, often while they are in the water. Their bodies sink below the
water and remain there for years. Later, if the swamp dries out, the bones
of several old elephants may be found in the newly exposed land. (Death
comes to all – turtles, elephants and us!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What infamous Countess was a mass murderer?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

284. A LOUSY SELECTION
During the middle ages, mayors in Hurdenburg in Sweden were elected by having the candidates bend forward, resting their beards on a table. A single louse would be placed in the centre and the lucky man whose beard the insightful louse crawled into would be the next mayor. (Have we had lousy politicians ever since?)

285. PARROTING
Parrots, most famous of all talking birds, rarely acquire a vocabulary of more than twenty words. However, Tymhoney Greys and African Greys have been known to carry vocabularies in excess of 100 words. (Am lost for words!)

286. NATURAL POLLUTION
About 27 tons of dust rains down on the earth each day from space, making a total of almost 10,000 tons each year. (Must have dusty roads up there!)

EXTENSIVE EXPLANATIONS

41. ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED FROM NOAH'S ARK

1. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.
2. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone might ask you to do something REALLY big.
3. Don't listen to critics -- do what has to be done.
4. Build on high ground.
5. For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
6. Two heads are better than one.
7. Speed isn't always an advantage. The cheetahs were on board, but so were the snails.
8. If you can't fight or flee -- float!
9. Take care of your animals as if they were the last ones on earth.
10. Don't forget that we're all in the same boat.
11. When the doo-doo gets really deep, don't sit there and complain -- shovel!!!
12. Stay below deck during the storm.
13. Remember that the ark was built by amateurs and the Titanic was built by professionals.
14. If you have to start over, have a friend by your side.
15. Remember that the woodpeckers INSIDE are often a bigger threat than the storm outside.
16. Don't miss the boat.
17. No matter how bleak it looks, there's always a rainbow on the other side.

47. TEENAGERS AND CATS

For all of you with teenagers or who have had teenagers, you may want to know why they really have a lot in common with cats:

1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.

2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.

3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.

4. Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay Leno, neither your cat nor your teen will ever crack a smile.

5. No cat or teenager shares you taste in music.

6. Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving, barely breathing.

7. Cats have nine lives. Teenagers carry on as if they did.

8. Cats and teenagers yawn in exactly the same manner, communicating that ultimate human ecstasy -- a sense of complete and utter boredom.

9. Cats and teenagers do not improve anyone's furniture.

10. Cats that are free to roam outside sometimes have been known to return in the middle of the night to deposit a dead animal in your bedroom. Teenagers are not above that sort of behavior.

Thus, if you must raise teenagers, the best sources of advice are not other parents, but veterinarians. It is also a good idea to keep a guidebook on cats at hand at all times. And remember, above all else, put out the food and do not make any sudden moves in their
direction. When they make up their minds, they will finally come to you for some affection and comfort, and it will be a triumphant moment for all concerned.

BIBLE TRIVIA

MYRTLE.......

has beautiful pink blossoms with a delicate fragrance and fragrant leaves. It was used by Isaiah as a symbol of God's continuous care and provision of Israel. (Isaiah 14:19-20) The branches were also used for festivals. eg. Nehemiah 8:15-16)

They are said to be an aphrodisiac as can be seen in Leah and Rachel's argument over Jacob and the desirability of sharing mandrakes to promote conception.

FORMER MUSLIM SHARING CHRIST

By Paul Strand, CBN News

SEATTLE, WA- Many former Muslims are now involved in efforts to convert believers in Islam to Christianity.

CBN News met with some of them as they linked up with other Christians at the Seattle Revival Center. They trained in how best to reach Muslims and then went out to do just that at the city's annual Arab Festival.

For some reason, Christians think Muslims are particularly hard to witness to. But these Muslims-turned-Christians pointed out they have the exact same spiritual needs as everybody else.

George Saieg, leader of Arabic Christian Perspective, advises Christians to dig into their own past and fears, remembering "how we used to be not assured of our salvation -- we used to be afraid of dying."

"And this is the same common ground that the Muslims have today -- that they're not assured of their salvation, that they're afraid of dying," he said. "But Jesus came to our life and changed our life. This is the story we need to tell them, how Jesus changed my life and He's able to change theirs, too."

Kamal Saleem came to America to recruit terrorists, but instead became a convert to Christ.

"Three Christian men reached out to me and loved me unconditionally," he said.

But many years before that, he was a terrorist - even as a child.

"I joined the PLO when I was seven years old. Before that, I was with a group called the Muslim Brotherhood when I was six years old. I went to assault camp when I was seven years old. I went on my first mission when I was seven years old. I became a recruiter when I was seven years old."

He fought in many battles and wars -- against Christians in Lebanon, Russians in Afghanistan, Jews in Israel.

But he ended up in America, recruiting new terrorists here.

"First you teach them Islamic teaching, and once it's embedded in their system, then you teach them how to use a gun," Saleem said.

Saieg agrees with Saleem, that Islam preaches violence.

"When I see Sura 9:5, it talks about ''kill the Christians and Jews -- the People of the Book -- wherever you find them.' There are over 140 verses in the Koran that talk about killing," Saieg says.

Saleem says don't buy everything you hear about Islam these days.

"Muslims will say 'We're a people of peace -- we worship the same God,'" He said.

But what they're really taught is "that Jews are pigs and monkeys. Jews they must be killed. 'The rock will cry out "there's a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him,"' Saleem said.

They say Muslims believe Christ was a mere man.

"He didn't even die on the cross. He was lifted up and He's coming back and He will be a Muslim," Saleem said.

Arabic Christian Perspective hopes to open up a lot of Islamic eyes when it holds a debate with Muslim apologist Nadir Ahmed in Anaheim, Calif., October 20.

Nadir Ahmed is raring to debate the key question: whether Islam is a religion of peace or terrorism.

"There's a lot of anti-Islamic propaganda, especially by Pat Robertson and CBN and places like that," Ahmed said. "And I'm really shocked to see how evangelicals love to promote this idea -- that it's not a religion of peace."

Ahmed seems a natural for this debate. He runs his own Web site defending Islam, Examine the Truth.com

"There's clear teaching to promote peace with non-Muslims. And those verses are not mentioned by these propagandists. And that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to mention those verses," he said.

But it didn't seem very peaceful when Muslims eavesdropped on CBN News' interview with Saieg then ripped into him for saying Islam was not a religion of peace.

They yelled and screamed he wasn't telling the truth, shouting down the former terrorist Saleem as he tried to defend Saieg.

Meanwhile, Ahmed insists Americans misunderstand Muslims and key Islamic words like "jihad," which means "struggle."

"Someone's struggling with alcoholism and he's trying to stay away from that. That's a jihad against alcohol," he said.

But Saieg says jihad almost always means bloody struggle. And Saleem warns that right here in America there are 45 Islamic assault camps where would-be terrorists train.

"These are embedded in different states," Saleem said. "Today the recruiting ground is in the prison system, high schools, universities, neighborhoods."

It's to counter such efforts that Saieg and his people are reaching out as quickly as they can to Muslims at Arab Festivals, like one that took place in Seattle, and a recent one in Dearborn, Mich., where dozens converted.

"And, praise the Lord, we had 42 Muslims come to the Lord." Saieg said.

These former Muslims insist Islamic people are not by nature violent. They totally blame the mayhem and terror pouring out of Islamic lands on the religion itself.

"I really look at Osama bin Laden himself as a victim of Islam. My problem is not with Osama bin Laden. My problem is not with the Muslim people," Saieg said. "My problem is with the teaching of Islam, the teaching of Koran because this is what is pushing Muslims to do what they're doing."

"So while these Christians say that Islam itself may be a danger, they believe the Islamic people are as deserving of love as anyone else and can be just as open to Jesus.

THE QUANDRY!

Have no idea on what to write,
Must be careful not to skite,
But there's nothing to skite about!
Could make something up - no doubt!

Rather, I'm not that very brave,
So just will leave an empty page.
For the Lord would know of my little game,
On Judgement Day, I must take the blame!

Better to be silent now, than boasting,
In this I'll avoid a needless roasting!

A DAVID MUSING

It is Sunday morning here in New Zealand and the final of the Rugby World Cup between England and South Africa from Paris, France, (Saturday evening their time) has just finished.

Five weeks ago, South Africa thrashed England 36-0. But 5 weeks is a long time in sport! The old "British bulldog' spirit came into play and the English team have improved for no-hopers to 'nearly world beaters! No, they lost the final to the Springboks, 15-6, while the pre-tournament favorites, our New Zealand All Blacks, could only watch from home and see what might, and should, have been.

Congratulations to South Africa for upholding Southern Hemisphere rugby pride. But next time the Blacks will be back!

Now to get ready for church where I can worship the winning God!

Until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
