WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH
Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now proceed to the 20th century which, as we all know, was noted for outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Surely all would now be transformed by the Spirit and the bride church produced. Of course, we now know the reality, where there has been greater splits and divisions than ever before. God weeps!

THE EARLY 1900'S

At the beginning of the 20th century there was an expectation that a huge outpouring of the Holy Spirit was imminent. None more so than in.....

CHARLES FOX PARNHAM (1873-1929) AND THE BETHEL BIBLE COLLEGE

In 1900, the young evangelist Parnham, took a study tour around leading ministries concluding.....

I returned home fully convinced that while many had obtained real experience in sanctification and the anointing that abideth, there still remained a great outpouring of power for the Christians who were to close this age.

In October 1900, together with his Quaker wife, Sarah, and sister-in-law, Lilian Thistlethwaite, Parham opened Bethel Bible College in Topeka, Kansas, with 40 students (including dependents) who were prepared to sell what they had, give it away, and enter the school for study and prayer, there to obey and live the commandments of Jesus. The only text book was the Bible and the teacher, the Holy Spirit.

By late December, the students had completed their scheduled courses. Three days prior to the end of the year, Parnham left to preach in Kansas City after exhorting his students to study the Bible for evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in an individual. Upon his return on New Year's Eve he found....

To my astonishment they all had the same story, that while there were different things occurred when the Pentecost al blessing fell, that the indisputable proof on each occasion was that they spoke with other tongues.

About 11pm, in the Watchnight Service at the dawn of the of the 20th century, Agnes Ozman (1870-1937), a Holiness preacher who was a student at the school, asked Parnham to pray for her to receive Holy Spirit baptism in the manner they had studied. Parnham, hesitant at first, finally prayed, recalling.....

Humbly in the name of Jesus, I laid my hand upon her head and prayed. I had scarcely repeated three dozen sentences when a glory fell upon her, a halo seemed to surround her head and face, and she began speaking in the Chinese language and was unable to speak in English for three days.

This fanned spiritual desire in Parnham and the others there so, setting aside normal activities, they set up an upper room where they would pray for their own personal Pentecost. On January 3rd, Parnham went to preach at the Free Methodist Church in Topeka, where he predicted that the entire school would have received the Pentecostal experience while he was away.

Returning at 10pm, he climbed the stairs to see a sheen of bright light coming form under the door. Going in, he was overwhelmed, for some were standing, others kneeling but all were singing "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" in perfect harmony, in tongues.

Parnham knelt and asked God for his personal Pentecost. God answered him saying that if he were willing to withstand the persecutions, hardships, trials, slander and scandal it would entail, the full blessing would be his. Replying yes.....

Right then there came a slight twist in my throat, a glory fell over me, and I began to worship God in the Swedish tongue, which later changed to other languages and continued so until the morning.

Meetings continued throughout the spring in nearby communities, but the results were marginal. However, groundwork was laid for Parnham's significant Pentecostal Revival in Zion City in 1906. By summer, the mansion they were renting was sold and the students dispersed. Sarah Parnham noted.....

Bethel Bible College was not intended to be a permanent school. The whole idea was a period of intensive training in the Word, prayer and evangelism.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BETHEL

Unlike many earlier leaders who had concluded that speaking in tongues was 1st century only, Parnham and the students at Bethel agreed with the conclusion of Edward Irving, 70 years earlier, that tongues was an objective criteria that the baptism of the Holy Spirit had been received. This understanding was foundational to the Pentecostal movement of the 20th century.

PARNHAM'S PERSECUTION

Parnham, as the Lord had promised him, suffered considerable persecution for his views. He was criticized as a racist, but in the context of his times, he was liberated, ministering to black, white and red alike. Robert Mapes Anderson says.....

Even before the Los Angeles revival, Parham had tapped this new ethnically heterogeneous constituency in Houston, where he garnered black converts like Seymour, Miss Farrow and "Brother" Johnson, and some Mexican Americans. At the 1913 summer encampment of Parham's group in Baxter Springs, Kansas, "White people, colored people and Indians all took part in the meeting" and as Brother Parham remarked, "We had the Gospel in black and white and red all over." For years, Parham held integrated meetings throughout the lower Midwest.

William Seymour, the black leader of the Asuza Street Revival, was one of his students and ministered under his leadership. Parnham was also accused of homosexuality, which was never proven and his support of the British Israelites (believing Anglo Saxons to be the 10 lost tribes of Israel) was ridiculed.

However, as we will see in upcoming weeks, his influence in the foundation of the Pentecostal movement was huge.

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus. (New translation this week.)

Jesus Teaches Against Greed (Luke 12:13-21)
And to the crowd, including a man who asked about sharing an inheritance.

“My friend,” “Who appointed me as your judge to decide how your inheritance should be divided?” “Watch out, and beware of all greedy thoughts and actions, for a person’s life isn’t summed up by how many possession they have.”

Using the example of the Parable of the Rich Fool.

“Once there was a rich man who owned land that was very productive. The man said to himself, ‘What shall I do? I’ve nowhere to store my crops?’ ‘I know what I’ll do,” he decided. “I’ll pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and then I’ll be able to store all my crops and everything I own. Then I’ll tell myself, ‘You have enough to live on for many years, so take life easy: eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!’ But God said to him, ‘You foolish man! Your life will be demanded back this very night, and then who will get everything you’ve stored up?’ This is what happens to people who hoard up wealth for themselves but are not rich as far as God is concerned.”

We are Not to Worry (Luke 12:22-34)
Speaking to the disciples.

“That’s why I tell you don’t worry about life, about what to eat, or about what clothes you should wear. Life is about more than food, and the body is about more than wearing clothes. Look at the ravens. They don’t sow or reap, they don’t have any storerooms or barns, but God feeds them. And you’re far more valuable than birds! Can you add an hour to your life by worrying about it? If you can’t do anything about such small things, why worry about the rest? Think of the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work, and they don’t spin thread for clothes, but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was as beautifully dressed as one of them.
“So if God clothes the fields with such beautiful flowers, which are here today but gone tomorrow when they are burned in a fire to heat an oven, how much more will God clothe you, you who have so little trust!
Don’t be concerned about what you’re going to eat or drink—don’t worry about it. These are all the things that people in the world worry about, but your Father knows you need them. Search for God’s kingdom, and you’ll be given these things as well. Don’t be afraid, little flock, for your Father is happy to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have, and give the money to the poor. Get yourselves purses that don’t wear out: treasure in heaven that will never run out, where no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. For your heart will be wherever your treasure is.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

ON REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS

189. There are two inexplicable things in life - that the bumblebee can fly and that the more forgiveness I give, the more I get.

190. Forgiveness flies away, a leaf borne by the wind, soon to be returned upon the wings of an angel.

378. Medicine heals the body, while forgiveness heals the soul.

379. Forgiveness is a mind soothing balm.

380. Repentance brings peace with God - forgiveness, peace with ones self.

381. The simplest way to avoid repentance is not to sin. All too often I forget to follow my own advice!

1305. True revival is built upon the foundation of tears.

"I didn’t even notice her," admitted Mr Peterson.

"And that dress that Mrs Hansen was wearing," continued Mrs Peterson, Really, don’t tell me that you think that’s a proper outfit for a mother of two."

"I’m afraid I didn’t notice that either," replied a resigned Mr Peterson.

"Oh, For heavens sake," his wife snapped. "A lot of good it does you to go to church!"

LIFE'S A LAUGH

72. THE GOFER BOY
Porky was eighteen years old, friendly, and eager to do things right. Unfortunately, he wasn't especially bright. He had just started his first job, as a delivery boy and general 'go-fer' at a furniture warehouse. His first task was to go out for coffee. He walked into a nearby coffee shop carrying a large thermos. When the counterman finally noticed him, he held up the thermos.

"Is this big enough to hold six cups of coffee?" he said.

The counterman looked at the thermos, hesitated for a few seconds, then finally said, "Yeah. It looks like about six cups to me."

"Good," Porky said. "Give me two regular, two black, and two decaf."

73. SPEED
A friend, driving home from a fishing trip in northern Michigan with his boat in tow, had engine trouble a few miles in from Lake Huron. He didn't have a CB radio in his car, so he decided to use his marine radio to get help. Climbing into his boat, he broadcast his call letters and asked for assistance. A Coast Guard officer responded, "Please give your location."

"I'm on Interstate-75, two miles south of Standish." The officer paused, "Could you repeat that?" My friend immediately complied, "I-75, two miles south of Standish."

There was a longer pause, then an incredulous voice asked my friend, "How fast were you going when you hit shore?"

74.THE ALPHABET
While walking through the woods one day, I was surprised to hear a child's voice. I followed the sound, trying in vain to understand the child's words. When I spotted a boy perched on a rock, I realized why his words had made no sense: He was repeating the alphabet.

"Why are you saying your ABC's so many times?" I asked him.

The child replied, "I'm saying my prayers."

I couldn't help but laugh. "Prayers? All I hear is the alphabet."

Patiently the child explained, "Well, I don't know all the words, so I give God the letters. He knows what I'm trying to say."

75. YOU TRY HARDER
Grandmother was approaching middle age when grandfather decided it was time she learned to drive. After acquiring a temporary permit, they took to the road for a practice
session, grandma sitting white-knuckled behind the wheel and Grandpa issuing instructions from the passenger seat. The lesson progressed uneventfully until grandpa happened to
glance out his window and down. The wheels were passing just centimetres away from the curb.

"Helen, watch out for the curb!" he exclaimed. This warning seemed to elicit little response from my grandmother, still hunched grimly behind the wheel. Indeed, the wheels crept even closer to the curb. Fighting to remain calm, he repeated his admonition. The wheels edged to within a hairs breadth of the curb. A collision seemed inevitable. Panic raised grandpa's voice to a roar, "Helen, the curb!" With a glare in my grandfather's direction grandmother carefully brought the car to a halt, switched off the ignition and turned huffily to face him and said angrily, "If you can drive any closer to the curb without hitting it, go ahead."

76. A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE
I got a call from a man who asked, "Is it possible to see England from Canada?" I said, "No."

He said "But they look so close on the map."

77. ONLY IN TEXAS
Another man called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he only had a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, "I heard Dallas was a big airport, and I need a car to drive between the gates to save time."

Laugh lots at life here.

Ukrainian Forces Withdraw From Crimea

But Despite the Tense Situation, Russians and Ukrainians Are Working Together In Christian Ministry and Fellowship!

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

Russian defense officials earlier said that the tricolor of Russia had been hoisted at 189 Ukrainian military units and facilities in Crimea.

But despite the tense situation, the Slavic Gospel Association (SGA), has shared a report from one of its sponsored missionaries, Pastor Alexander Chernyak, who labors in Ukraine’s Volyn region, which they say, “is the good news seldom reported in the media—an example of how Christ unites people in His love, and for the sake of the Gospel!”

Pastor Chernyak wrote, “Many times, we receive invitations from our brothers in Russia to help advance God’s Kingdom in their country, and asking us to pray for them. Recently, I went with a brother from Lutsk to go help train ministers in Russia, and assist them in their ministry.

“I was blessed to visit four Russian regions: Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Chuvashia and Mari El. While there, we held sessions on planting new churches, worshipped together, and had special meetings with pastors and youth. I visited large cities, but noticed how small the churches are comparatively with many in Ukraine.

“Compared with the population of Russia, there are still very few evangelical churches there. I could see the meaning of the Lord’s words, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few’ (Luke 10:2).

“We prayed with the local brothers, shared our experiences, and considered the ways Ukrainian churches can help Russian churches. Where we were visiting, many of the people are pagan or Muslim, or just indifferent to spiritual matters.”

He added, “When I got back home, I reported to the church about our trip. We decided to pray, asking the Lord to show us where we can help, and cooperate with our Russian brothers and sisters in the work of advancing the Gospel. We have a lot of work in our own church, but we believe that serving believers and the Lord in other nations is our responsibility too. It was a blessed time for me. I saw God’s clear guidance, realizing that we need to pray that the Lord will send more laborers to His field!”

The SGA spokesperson said, “Alexander’s words are true! Russia and her neighboring countries are vast in size, and 90 percent of cities, towns and villages do not have even one evangelical church. Through SGA, you can help send more missionary pastors like Alexander out to gather the waiting harvest.”

He added that “Sponsoring one is easy.” Just go www.sga.org/ministries/church-planting, to find out more, or call SGA at 1-800-BIBLE-50, and ask for Shirley Davis.

Note: Since 1934, SGA (www.sga.org) has been serving evangelical churches, helping make disciples of the people in the lands of Russia for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through prayer, strategic ministry and financial assistance.

WAXING LYRICAL

This particular Sunday, I was late starting to write PGIM, for I listened in the early morning on the radio to the New Zealand 'All Blacks' beating Ireland 22-3 in a Rugby Union international. By way of explanation, the game was played in Ireland, who are currently 11 hours behind New Zealand time.

Finally, coming to write, A David Musing, I had no inspiration, so asked the Lord what to write! 'A poem!' 'No Lord, takes too long! 'Call it Tick Tock!' (God has a sense of humour!) 'Okay Lord.'

The result follows. And it didn't take too long, after all!

TICK TOCK

Hours fly by,
Oh me, oh my!
Deadlines come, deadlines go,
Need to go, with the flow.

Tick tock goes the clock.

The day dawns nice and bright,
Summer's here, heaps of light.
Enjoy the sun,
Have some fun.

Tick tock goes the clock.

Months do pass,
All too fast.
Christmas will soon be here,
Time of goodwill and cheer.

Tick tock goes the clock.

The years, they roll by,
Oh my, how they fly!
From youth, onwards to middle age,
Life proceeds, stage by stage.

Tick tock goes the clock.

A new generation takes the stage,
What's happened? 'Tis called age!
Time flies by now, even faster,
Get ready to meet thy master!

Tick tock goes the clock.

The clock stops... silence reigns.
Now is it loss, or is it gains?
Where will you be the day your time is up?
In hell, or in heaven, with Jesus to sup?

A DAVID MUSING

This week has been an emotional roller coaster for Kathy and myself, as Kathy's 90 year old mother has been literally sick, stopping her wanting to eat which, at 32kg, is not something that can go on too long. Additionally, our dear 87 year old friend, Joce, who had a bowel caner operation 3 weeks ago, has had the colostomy reversed on Friday, in order to try and improve a downtown in her medical condition over the past week or so.

At times such as this the reality of life and death, and the lack of respect and appreciation that most of us have for good health while we have it, hit home.

Whatever our attitude is towards God's healing and health, the reality is, due to the sin of Adam and Eve, death is inevitable, for one day, we all die (Lazarus twice!).

As believers, we all know that this death is physical only, for we have already received eternal life through trust and obedience to our Saviour and Lord, Jesus. What a comfort we have.

But the pain, both physical and emotional, remains, both for the dying and for those left behind.

Perhaps this week, you, we, can make a special effort to support and comfort someone who is struggling with this inevitable life and death situation.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

David Tait
