WHAT IS CHURCH?

A question being asked by many believers today is, "What is church?"

This new awakening has arisen through a dissatisfaction with 'church as we know it', one of personal disillusionment in many cases, while in others, it is the revelation of God.

The established church, of all hues, has tended to regard those who are asking such questions as disobedient or disaffected, and have ignored the, often pertinent, points these people are raising.

While this was perhaps justifiable when the flow of those leaving the church was but a trickle, it cannot be disregarded now, for in many places, the trickle has become a torrent. If the present trend continues, in only a relatively short time until there will be more Jesus followers outside the established church than within. This is not being radical, but real! The established church ignores it at its peril!

Is the problem then, the disaffected people, or 'church' the way we know it?

Let's have a look at the traditional way we 'do church'. The basic model of the church, put in place at the time the Roman Emperor Constantine was converted, making Christianity the state religion in 350AD, through the Roman Catholic era, the Reformation, and the Pentecostal awakening of the 20th century, has basically remained unchanged. Expressed simply, it was, and is,

PASTOR + PROGRAMME + BUILDING = CHURCH

I have been blessed to associate with many church planters. They are fantastic bunch of dedicated people! But nearly all work on the principle of entering a new area, setting up a programme, moving heaven and earth to get a building, before finally considering they have established a church. A 'pastor' can put a 'programme' into place relatively easily in most cases, so the central focus almost invariably falls upon the 'building'. As if all problems will be solved and the people will rush in, once a church is built! While a new building does attract people, though often only from the church next door, it is not the primary solution to the challenge of attracting unbelievers to Jesus. Multitudinous churches with empty pews prove this point. If all we had to do was build churches and establish programmes to attract new believers, the church would have evangelised the world by now!

The church then, has become focused on a physical kingdom of church buildings operating programmes under Pastoral leadership. Invariably, leadership confuses the building and programmes, with God's kingdom! Believers are encouraged to relate to 'the church' rather than to Jesus. Even the most godly of leaders fall into this trap! So the church becomes a conduit, a link, between the people and Jesus. "Come to church, participate and meet Jesus." Do we necessarily meet God then? You be the judge!

I want to suggest that the example of the New Testament church, the church Jesus is calling us to today, is based on an entirely different principle.

PEOPLE + JESUS --> SERVANTHOOD = CHURCH

The church of Jesus consists of believers! People who love Jesus! Those who, because of their love for Jesus, serve Him, desiring to grow into His image. Not a hierachical, Pastor led group of followers (although 'pastoring', the function, is necessary). Not a series of programmes that tend to weary even the most enthusiastic of followers over time (though some programmes can be of benefit to spiritual growth) Not a building, for that so easily becomes the focus of faith instead of Jesus.

Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is within. He was a radical. He changed the Old Covenant system based firstly upon a physical Tabernacle, then the Temple, to a living, vibrant, personal, internal acceptance of a sacrificed, risen and glorified Saviour. From the outward circumcision of genitalia to an internal circumcision of the heart!

The 'Church' is people! A group of Jesus believers! It is not about leadership, but servanthood, it is not about programmes, but servanthood, and above all, it is not about building buildings, but building Jesus into people. Jesus was the ultimate servant and we are to model our behaviour upon His. Yes, a servant-hearted people, focused upon Jesus, will revolutionise the world.

"But David, I am glorifying the Lord with the biggest, brightest, best church in town!" "Is it truly to His glory?"

FROM THE WORD

"Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.”" (Luke 17:20-21)

"But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people." (Hebrews 8:6-10)

"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:1-11)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

SERVANTHOOD

564. To serve is to…
… love the unlovely
… help the helpless
… befriend the lonely
… rebuild the brokenhearted
… soothe the sick
… bless the poor
… raise up the downtrodden
… seek the lost
… comfort the dying

565. True servants add their own desires to the end of the queue.

566. Pride demolishes, while servanthood builds.

567. Leaders of character understand the twin character difference between serve and slave.

570. For down to be up, up must first be down.

571. A ‘servant leader’ is beyond the world’s comprehension. And many Christians too!

573. Show me a true servant and I will show you one whom God truly loves.

577. Service is the invincible secret weapon of God’s Army.

578. ‘Service with a smile’ means to ‘go the extra mile.’

579. The world works by taking away, God by giving away.

580. To go down to go up is logical. Ask a bouncy ball!

581. To serve is a blessing, to lead a challenge. To be a servant leader, a challenging blessing!

582. A theologian thinks, a worshiper feels, a servant acts.

FROM YOU - TO ME - TO YOU

David
Many people think it would be Zacheaus (a wee little man); others
Nee-high-miah; still others Bildad the shuhite (shoe-height). But any
decent Bible scholar knows that the smallest man in the Bible is the
guard who fell asleep on his watch!

David

Hi Dave
You have not lost your marbles. The Church has in the Americas.

I also would not trust these so called Christian Parties. Christ warned us to keep away from worldly things and to have no part in Politics. Our aim is to prepare the world for what is to come.

We are in the Last Days and most people have not a clue what is going to happen.

Dear David,
Congratulations on 201 editions of your wonderful weekly message. Your
words are always such a blessing.

However, I must disagree with your identification of Nehemiah as the
shortest person in the Bible. Knee-high-miah was a giant compared to Bildad
the Shuhite.

Blessings,
Dal
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear David,
You said that Nehemiah (Knee-high-Miah) was the shortest man in the Bible.
I thought it was Bildad the Shuhite (Shoe-height) (Job 2:11; 8:1; 18:1; 25:1; & 42:9).
Ha, ha, ha.
I must agree with you about the persecution. May you have much more of it!!!!

Love in Jesus,
Rodney.

A person wrote in saying: Texas may be the biggest of the contigious 48 states, but Alaska is a little bigger.
That may be quite true, but if you melt all the ice it will be as big as Rhode Island (USA's smallest state).

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

412. THE FUNERAL
A new Pastor in a small Oklahoma town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first services.

The following Sunday the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the Pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the church was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice said.

Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church.

Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead church," all the people eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look.

In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

411. OBSERVANT
Three people were trying to get into heaven. Peter asked the first, "Who's there?" "It's me, Albert Jones," the voice replied. St. Peter let him in.

Then St. Peter asked the second one the second same question, "Who's there?" "It's me, Charlie Jones." And St. Peter let him in.

Finally he turns to the third, asking the same question, "Who's there?" "It is I, Verla Chapman," answered the third.

"Oh, great," muttered St. Peter. "Another one of those English teachers."

THE HIGH TECH CAT
By Beverly Bardsley

The modern world leaves me a wreck,
But not my kitty -- she's high tech!

When snoozing she prefers to nap
On my laptop, not my lap.

For exercise and to relax
She takes a stroll across the fax,

Then leaps to land on the computer --
The narrow top seems built to suit her.

She dusts the screen off with her tail
While I'm reading my e-mail.

When I'm sleeping peacefully
She checks phone messages for me,

Then looks at me as if to say,
"Well, the button was marked PLAY."

If she's feeling really bored
She hits the button for record --

Words not for a stranger's ear
Go on tape for all to hear.

But as a self-respecting cat
There's one gizmo she draws the line at.

Of all the gadgets in the house
There's one she'll never touch - the mouse!

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS

EACH SOCIETY HAS IT'S OWN STANDARDS OF PHYSICAL BEAUTY
It is difficult to know just what the ancient Hebrews found beautiful. Most of the attractive women in the Bible are not described in detail, usually simply being described as being 'beautiful'. Some 'beauties' in the Old Testament were Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Bathsheba, Tamar, Ashibag and Esther.

The Queen of Sheba is generally regarded as being beautiful. She came from modern day Ethiopia. I have visited Ethiopia and can testify that there are many, many beautiful women there. Of course, maybe I shouldn't have noticed! But.....

WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON A LINK BETWEEN HURRICANE KATRINA AND THE ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL ?

One view is of an ongoing link between events in Israel (promoted by the US) and natural disasters in the United States. This one is from Koenigs International News.

Standing with former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, President George
W. Bush discusses the plans to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina in the Oval
Office Sept. 1, 2005. While these men were actively involved in the negotiations to divide
Israel’s covenant land the United States experienced nine of the ten costliest insurance
events in U.S. history; six of the seven costliest hurricanes in U.S. history; three
of the four largest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history; nine of the top ten natural disasters in U.S. history ranked by FEMA relief costs; and the two largest terrorism events in U.S. history.

On 6 December 2002 they published an opinion that would appear prophetic in line with the events of the past week.

"TEN MAJOR EVENTS Related to U.S./ ISRAEL" -Koenigs 6/12/02.

1. October 30, 1991: The Perfect Storm - As President George H. W. Bush is opening the Madrid (Spain) Conference to consider "land for peace" in Israel's Middle East role, the "perfect storm" develops in the North Atlantic, creating the largest waves ever
recorded in that region. The storm travels 1000 miles from "east to west" instead of the normal "west to east" pattern and crashes into the New England Coast. Thirty-five foot waves crash into the Kennebunkport home of President Bush.

2. August 23, 1992: Hurricane Andrew - When the Madrid Conference moves to Washington DC and the peace talks resume, Hurricane Andrew, the worst natural disaster ever to hit America, comes ashore and produces an estimated $30 billion in damage and leaving 180,000 homeless in Florida.

3. January 16, 1994: Northridge Earthquake - President Bill Clinton meets with Syria's President Hafez el-Assad in Geneva. They talk about a peace agreement with Israel that includes giving up the Golan Heights. Within 24 hours, a powerful 6.9 earthquake rocks Southern California. This quake, centered in Northridge, becomes the second most destructive natural disaster to hit the United States, behind Hurricane Andrew.

4. January 21, 1998: Lewinsky Scandal - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with President Clinton at the White House and is coldly received. Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright refuse to have lunch with him. Shortly afterwards on that day, the Monica Lewinsky scandal breaks into the mass media and begins to occupy a major portion of Clinton's time.

5. September 28, 1998: Hurricane George - As Secretary of State Albright works on the final details of an agreement in which Israel would give up 13 percent of Yesha (Judah and Samaria), Hurricane George slams into the United States Gulf Coast with 110 mph winds
and gusts up to 175 mph. The hurricane hits the coast and stalled. On September 28, Clinton meets with Yasser Arafat and Netanyahu at the White House to finalize this land deal. Later, Arafat addresses the United Nations about declaring an independent Palestinian state by May 1999, as Hurricane George pounds the Gulf Coast, causing $1 billion in damage. At the exact time that Arafat departs the country, the storm begins to dissipate.

6. October 15-22, 1998: Texas Flooded - On October 15, 1998, Arafat and Netanyahu meet at the Wye River Plantation in Maryland. The talks are scheduled to last five days with the focus on Israel giving up 13 percent of Yesha. The talks are extended and conclude on October 23. On October 17, awesome rains and tornadoes hit southern Texas. The San Antonio area is deluged with rain. The rain and flooding in Texas continue until October 22 and then subside. The floods ravage 25 percent of Texas and leave over one
billion dollars in damage. On October 21, Clinton declares this section of Texas a major disaster area.

7. November 30, 1998: Market Capitalization Evaporates - Arafat comes to Washington again to meet with President Clinton to raise money for a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital. A total of 42 other nations were represented in Washington. All the nations agreed to give Arafat $3 billion in aid. Clinton promised $400 million, and the European nations $1.7 billion. On the same day, the Dow Jones average drops 216 points, and on December 1, the European Market had its third worst day in history. Hundreds of billions of market capitalization were wiped out in the U.S. and Europe.

8. December 12, 1998: Clinton is Impeached - As Clinton lands in the Palestinian-controlled section of Israel to discuss the "land for peace" process, the House of Representatives votes four articles of impeachment against him.

9. May 3, 1999: The Powerful Super Tornado - On the day that Yasser Arafat is scheduled to declare a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital, the most powerful tornado storm system ever to hit the United States sweeps across Oklahoma and Kansas.
The winds are clocked at 316 mph the fastest wind speed ever recorded. The declaration is postponed to December 1999 at the request of President Clinton, whose letter to Arafat encourages him in his "aspirations for his own land." He also writes that the Palestinians have a right to "determine their own future on their own land" and that they deserve to "live free, today, tomorrow and forever."

10. Week of October 11: Hurricane, Earthquake and Dow Collapse - As Jewish settlers in 15 West Bank (Israel) settlements are evicted from the covenant land in Israel, the Dow-Jones financial averages lose 5.7 percent in the worst week since October 1989. On October 15 the Dow lost 266 points, and a hurricane slams into North Carolina. On the next morning, October 16, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocks the southwest in the fifth most powerful earthquake in 20th Century. The earthquake was centered in the California desert and did little damage but was felt in three states.

A DAVID MUSING

This week we must pray for, and help where we can, those who are suffering in the latest tragedy to hit the world, this time in America. No country, or people, is exempt from the power of nature that once again has illustrated how man's puny efforts, no matter how amazing they may seem, are nothing compared to the powerful forces of the natural universe created by our God.

The events that have since unfolded, particularly in New Orleans, illustrate graphically how thin our veneer of civilisation really is. We truly are all sinners, only able to be restored by the grace of God.

We do not know when or where tragedy, a normal, ongoing, part of life on earth, will strike next. Soberingly, this is a huge motivation to keep short accounts with God, and each other.

So until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
