THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues

We are looking at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See the last 30 weeks issues of PGIM!)

EDUCATION METHODS

Greek (Western) In Western ways, education is the responsibility of teachers and pupils are streamed according to their abilities.

Our education system has been inherited directly from Greek culture. In Greece, large gymnasiums (from 'gymnos', meaning naked) were built in which to teach the elite. Professional teachers were employed to strip intelligent students of the information they had gathered at home and replace it with instruction on every conceivable subject. Knowledge was the key both to excellence and power.

Children from poor families were dissuaded from studying science or the arts and encouraged to learn a trade from their parents instead.

Eastern (Hebrew) In the original Hebrew, before the development of the more modern Rabbinical system, fathers and mothers were responsible for their children's education, imparting knowledge from the creator, including His moral values and judgments.

The Lord is to be the teacher. He taught Moses.....

10 Moses said to the LORD, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11 The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” (Exodus 4:10-12)

What Moses taught the people, the people were to teach to their children.....

9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.” (Deuteronomy 4:9-10)

Before Samson was born his mother asked for him to be taught by God's representative....

8 Then Manoah prayed to the LORD: “O Lord, I beg you, let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born.” (Judges 13:8)

Arts and science was taught, but it was all based on scriptural principles. Some knowledge was not included, even if it was the truth. The classic example, which still causes controversy today, is sex education. It was not held to be healthy for children to learn at an early age.

The Law set out the limitations on sexual relations.....

6 ”‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD..... (Leviticus 18:6)

But the mechanisms of bodily function were not taught at an early age. Birth control was facilitated by keeping the women separate from the men!

Unlike today, moral values were also taught. As fathers and mothers had a stake in their children's future, they had the child's entire life in mind in what they taught, and were not simply conduits for the acquisition of knowledge.

SOME SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

1. We must understand that our education system teaches knowledge but is limited in other areas.

2. We cannot abdicate the teaching of our children entirely to the system. Moral values need to be taught in the home.

3. We need to control what our children hear, see and read, for not all information is good and helpful in the healthy development of our family.

(To be continued next week.)

FROM THE WORD

Signs for Moses

"Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?” Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. The LORD said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. Then the LORD said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. “This,” said the LORD, “is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.” Then the LORD said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was leprous, like snow. “Now put it back into your cloak,” he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh. Then the LORD said, “If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first miraculous sign, they may believe the second. But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.” Moses said to the LORD, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” Then the LORD’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform miraculous signs with it.”" (Exodus 4:1-17)

Obedience Commanded

"Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. You saw with your own eyes what the LORD did at Baal Peor. The LORD your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, but all of you who held fast to the LORD your God are still alive today. See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.” You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice. He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. And the LORD directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess." (Deuteronomy 4:1-14)

Unlawful Sexual Relations

"The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God. You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.

* ”‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.
* ”‘Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that would dishonor your father.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter; that would dishonor you.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s close relative.
* ”‘Do not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; do not have relations with her.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would dishonor your brother.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.
* ”‘Do not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.
* ”‘Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor’s wife and defile yourself with her.
* ”‘Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.
* ”‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.
* ”‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.

”‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the aliens living among you must not do any of these detestable things, for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you. ”‘Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.’”" (Leviticus 18:1-30)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

ON SEX (How to offend at least half the people all the time. But still, it is a part of life!)

86. Men are inefficient sexual machines – thinking about it far more than doing it.
Women however, don’t think about it as much - often even when doing it.

87. Sex is like riding a bicycle – once learned, never forgotten – although technique can always be improved.

88. Sexuality and self-worth are intimately intertwined.

89. Holiness is not found in sexual abstinence but rather in sexual purity. Abstinence is tough, purity even tougher.

90. Children have little trouble in accepting the ‘immaculate conception,’ for surely their parents couldn’t have ‘done it’! I was young once…….

91. God made men and women to be different. Men give love for sex, women, sex for love.

Please feel free to quote these quotes. Acknowledgement of David Tait as the author would be appreciated. There are now over 1300 David sayings for you to view at ...

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

530. WHAT HAPPENED?
A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore, where a seagull lay dead in the and. "Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked. "He died and went to Heaven," the dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back down?"

529. THE TRUTH
Years ago, when our daughters were very young, we'd drop them off at our church's children's chapel on Sundays before the eleven o'clock service.

One Sunday, just as I was about to open the door to the small chapel, the minister came rushing up in full vestments. He said he had an emergency and asked if I'd speak to the children at their story time. He said the subject was the Twenty-third Psalm.

But just as I was about to get up from the back row and talk about the good shepherd, the minister burst into the room and signalled to me that he would be able to do the story time after all.

He told the children about sheep, that they weren't smart and needed lots of guidance, and that a shepherd's job was to stay close to the sheep, protect them from wild animals and keep them from wandering off and doing dumb things that would get them hurt or killed.

He pointed to the little children in the room and said that they were the sheep and needed lots of guidance.

Then the minister put his hands out to the side, palms up in a dramatic gesture, and with raised eyebrows said to the children, "If you are the sheep then who is the shepherd?" He was pretty obviously indicating himself.

A silence of a few seconds followed. Then a young visitor said, " Jesus, Jesus is the shepherd."

The young minister, obviously caught by surprise, said to the boy, "Well, then, who am I?"

The little boy frowned thoughtfully and then said with a shrug, "I guess you must be a sheep dog."

528. THE DESERVED GIFT
I recall a story my father used to tell about a pastor who had been at a church for 20 years. To show their appreciation for all his years of faithful service, the congregation decided to collect an offering and buy him a new car. So on the Sunday of his anniversary they had a special reception in honour of the pastor and his wife. Lots of visitors come in for the occasion. Near the end of the reception, the chairman of the deacons got
up and presented the keys to a brand new Lincoln Town Car to the pastor. The pastor was so overwhelmed he really did not know what to say. After taking a few moments to collect himself, he addressed the congregation and said, "I just want you to know that I really do not appreciate this, but I sure do deserve it!"

985. TOWER TOWERS
The actual height of the Eiffel Tower is 984 feet. But it grows by 6 inches in summer, as metal expands. And shrinks back to normal in the winter, as metal contracts. (What goes up must come down.)

986. THE SEVEN SEEAS
An ancient term describing what were believed to be all the seas and oceans of the world. Many people believe the seven are what we now know as the Arctic, Antarctic, North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic and Indian oceans. However, the phrase has no literal meaning and is used to romanticise sailing. It came into use before some of the oceans were even known to exist.(Nothing romantic about seasickness though!)

JUST JOKES

203. MUSICAL BEE
The summer band class was just getting under way when a large insect flew into the room.

The sixth-graders, eager to play their shiny new instruments, tried to ignore the buzzing intruder, but eventually one student could stand it no more. He rolled up his music book and swatted the insect, then he stomped on it to ensure its fate.

"Is it a bee?" another student asked.

"Nope," he replied. "It's a bee flat."

202. WHAT A COINCIDENCE?
When his eyes began to give him trouble, a man went to a ophthalmologist in Prague.

The doctor showed the patient the eye chart, displaying the letters CVKPNWXSCZ.

"Can you read that?" the doctor asked.

"Can I read it?" the Czech replied. "I dated his sister!"

201. ALLLEEE OOOP!
A champion jockey is about to enter an important race on a new horse. The horse's trainer meets him before the race and says, "All you have to remember with this horse is that every time you approach a jump, you have to shout, 'ALLLLEEE OOOP!' really loudly in the horse's ear. Providing you do that, you'll be fine."

The jockey thinks the trainer is mad but promises to shout the command. The race begins and they approach the first hurdle. The jockey ignores the trainer's ridiculous advice and the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.

They carry on and approach the second hurdle. The jockey, somewhat embarrassed, whispers 'Aleeee ooop' in the horse's ear. The same thing happens--the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.

At the third hurdle, the jockey thinks, "It's no good, I'll have to do it," and yells, "ALLLEEE OOOP!" really loudly. Sure enough, the horse sails over the jump with no problems. This continues for the rest of the race, but due to the earlier problems the horse only finishes third.

The trainer is fuming and asks the jockey what went wrong. The jockey replies, "Nothing is wrong with me - it's this horse. What is he - deaf or something?"

The trainer replies, "Deaf?? DEAF?? He's not deaf--he's BLIND!"

Pentecostal Boxer Wins Olympic Gold - Irish Boxer Punched, Prayed Her Way to Victory

11:00AM EDT 8/10/2012 Clive Price

Katie Taylor

Gold medalist Katie Taylor of Ireland looks up as silver medalist Sofya Ochigava of Russia looks on during the medal ceremony for the Women's Light (60kg) boxing competition at the London Olympic Games on Thursday (Reuters/Damir Sagolj)

Like a warrior princess from ancient days, Irish boxer Katie Taylor proudly carried her nation’s flag after scooping Olympic gold. But she carried her Christian faith into the media spotlight, too.

“I’m here because of the grace of God,” she told journalists after her close 10-8 victory against Russia’s Sofya Ochigava. “Thank you, Jesus,” added Taylor, who takes every microphone moment to mention her beliefs.

She went on to become ‘Best Women's Boxer’ of the Games. An award usually went to male boxers, but it was decided a similar honor should also go to women boxers on this, their Olympic debut.

The 26-year-old fighter, who’s been boxing since childhood, is a member of St Mark’s Church, Dublin, a Pentecostal congregation in the heart of Ireland’s capital. Her sister-in-law Kimberley is worship leader there.

Part of Assemblies of God Ireland, the church is located near fashionable Grafton Street and Trinity College, which is home to the early medieval Gospels, The Book Of Kells.

Some of St Mark’s 750 worshippers joined the masses of other Irish fans at London’s ExCel Center for the fight. More than 200 devotees watched back at the church.

In Taylor’s hometown of Bray, 10,000 fans followed the match on a big screen. Locals told Irish broadcaster RTE they were proud of the little girl who’d become the big name in women’s boxing.

Proclaimed as “Warrior Hero” by the Irish Independent, Taylor won not only the women’s lightweight boxing final, but also the hearts of her nation—and, it seemed, much of the world—as the news swept from Boston to Brisbane.

“Katie Taylor has lifted the spirit of the nation,” said President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins. Taoiseach Enda Kenny described Taylor as “a force of nature.” The Taoiseach––Irish for prime minister––paid tribute to her parents, Peter and Bridget, who had been “her guiding light.”

The Taylors had gone to church before setting off for London. “We had them up on the platform and prayed blessing on them,” said Pastor Sean Mullarkey, 42. “We’re so blessed to know them––they honestly are a lovely family.”

Mullarkey said at the time he believed God would use Katie as “a vessel of hope and good news” as Ireland stumbled in the grip of recession. That came true.

As one spectator put it in a Web report, “Everybody forgets about the recession when she fights.” Taylor’s victory had an explosive effect on the arena audience. “It just erupted,” said an RTE reporter on the radio.

The feeling transferred to the streets. Grown men wept at home, Dublin motorists sounded car horns and neighbors shouted with joy across their garden fences. Workplaces had closed early. One media worker in Dublin said the city had “just stopped” for the fight.

Mullarkey found himself being quoted by the BBC. “It was a fantastic day for the church,” he told Charisma. “In one day we’ve gone from a level of obscurity—to a church that everyone has heard about.”

But away from the applause, who is Katie Taylor? “She has fought the good fight in more ways than one,” her pastor explained. “She has grown as a person in her faith and just the way she carries herself.”

Few people see the grueling routine behind her success, such as jogging on cold winter mornings and doing a six-hour training day. “It has to be faith with action,” said Mullarkey, “and she epitomizes that.”

Preparation for fights includes praying with her mom—and training with male boxers. On one occasion, she gave a sparring partner a black eye. “I didn’t mind,” said the male fighter, “because it was Katie.”

Such respect is earned through hard work and heavenly assistance. As a Scripture text at her training facility says, “He makes my hands ready for battle.” Those who receive Taylor’s blistering punches wouldn’t argue with that.

A DAVID MUSING

On Friday, I drove our truck through to the city of Gisborne to pick up a load of surplus clothing for export.

Half way there I stopped at the town of Wairoa, where I bought something to eat, then went and sat down on the river bank to enjoy it. The sun was shining, and a man was attempting to catch whitebait (very small fish) in a net from the little landing in the photograph. For it was one of the first days of the regulated fishing season.

After weeks of seemingly almost continuous winter rain it was a real joy to bask in the pre-Spring sunshine. A glimpse of what is to come over the months ahead! The passing of winter, and the heralding of Spring. Blossom abounded on the stonefruit trees. A new life, a new hope, is coming.

The day reminded me of living. Yes, we all have Winter seasons when life gets on top of us, when hope turns into hopelessness, when joy turns to despair. Such is human life. Yet, as surely as night follows day, Spring inevitably bursts forth with its promise of a new life, new hope, renewed joy.

We must always to look forward to that day, for it will come.....

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

(John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
