THE PURGING of THE CHURCH

The Lord has led me to go back to a sermon/prophecy I received in a group mailing, and filed, some time ago. It is by David Wilkerson.

David was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. He was called to New York in 1958 to minister to gang members and drug addicts, as told in the best-selling book, The Cross and the Switchblade.

After the introduction, he gave 11 bullet points about THE GLORIOUS FUTURE JUST AHEAD. As the Lord leads, I will expand on these challenging but inspiring aspects over the weeks ahead.

10. Christ no longer the stranger in our midst, but CROWNED - PRE-EMINENT!

Again, this follows on from last week.

Jesus was prophesied to come as King and Lord.....

7 Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty –he is the King of glory. (Psalms 24:7-10)

Jesus has been crowned, and will be returning as Lord of lords and King of kings.....

13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings – and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.’ (Revelation 17:13-14)

Jesus is to be our personal Saviour and Lord. He is to be preeminent in our lives.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)

Jesus is no stranger! As genuine followers we are his brothers and sisters.....

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12 He says, ‘I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.’ (Hebrews 2:10-12)

We are precious to God, and He must be precious to us.

The living Stone and a chosen people

4 As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’ 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,’ 8 and, ‘A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the message – which is also what they were destined for. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:4-10)

We need to both understand this and show it through godly living, to show that He truly is preeminent in our life.....

Living godly lives in a pagan society

11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor. (1 Peter 2:11-17)

So that we may be truly able to share in this doxology.....

24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy – 25 to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen. (Jude 1:24-5)

Amen.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

The Feast of Tabernacles (John 7:1-13)
Jesus initially stays away in fear of His life.

“This is not my time to go, not yet; but you can go whenever you want, for any time’s the right time for you. 7The world has no reason to hate you, but it does hate me, because I make it clear that its ways are evil. 8You go on to the festival. I’m not going to this festival because this is not the right time for me, not yet.”

Cost of Following Jesus (Matthew 8:18-22, Luke 9:57-62)
People make excuses to delay following Jesus.

“Foxes have their dens, and wild birds have their nests, but the Son of man doesn’t even have a place to rest his head.”
“Let the dead bury their own dead,” “You go and proclaim God’s kingdom.”
“Nobody once they’ve started plowing and then looks back is fit for God’s kingdom.”

Teaching at the Feast (John 7:14-24)
Ignoring danger, Jesus arrives half way through to teach, surprising the Pharisees with His learning.

“My teaching is not from me but from the One who sent me. Anyone who chooses to follow what God wants will know if my teaching comes from God or if I’m only speaking for myself. Those who speak for themselves want to glorify themselves, but someone who glorifies the one who sent him is truthful and not deceitful. Moses gave you the law, didn’t he? Yet none of you keeps the law! Why are you trying to kill me?”
“I did one miracle and you’re all shocked by it,” “However because Moses told you to circumcise—not that it really came from Moses, but from your forefathers before him—you perform circumcision on the Sabbath. If you circumcise on the Sabbath to make sure that the law of Moses isn’t broken, why are you angry with me for healing someone on the Sabbath? Don’t judge by appearances; decide what’s right!”

Teaching in the Temple after the Feast (John 7:25-44)
Jesus questioned as to whether or not He is the Christ.

“So you think you know me and where I’m from? However I did not come for my own sake. The One who sent me is true. You don’t know him, but I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”
“I’ll be with you just a little longer, but then I’ll return to the One who sent me. You’ll search for me but you won’t find me; and you can’t come where I’m going.”
“If you’re thirsty, come to me and drink. If you trust in me, you will have streams of life-giving water flowing out from within you, as Scripture says.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

GENERAL

560. Mankind loves words, God desires action.

810. Grace is God working in us, in order to work through us.

868. Sovereign 'Sonship' is birthed in sacrificial servanthood.

869. God designed 'the Church' to be the means, not the end.

872. The humanist looks inwards, the activist outwards, but truth is found in looking upwards.

873. To 'win' God we must first 'lose' ourselves.

1076. A dose of adversity is the best treatment for a swollen ego.

1272. Practice makes 'less imperfect'.

1275. We can make a world of difference by being different to the world.

1276. For Christ, the world is won one by one!

1312. Theology is based on knowledge while understanding is grounded in relationship.

1313. Our best sermon is our life.

1314. Sadly, many Christians are more concerned about the Bible version you read than the Bible you live!

1316. It is great to LOVE the Word, but it is God's desire for us to LIVE the Word. What a difference a letter makes!

TUESDAY TEACHINGS

THIS WEEK: RELATIONSHIP V THEOLOGY

The church has been based upon theology. Many denominations have been founded because they have had a theological difference to other denominations. Division has been rife in the body of Christ.

Today however, there is a 'new move', away from theology, back to the early New Testament period emphasis on a personal relationship with Jesus.

This is importantly reflected in the leadership function, where we are seeing a change developing from a professional, theological based leadership, to one based on God's calling.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

222. APPLES AND COOKIES
Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.

The nun made a note, "Take only one: God is watching."

Moving through the line, to the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A boy wrote a note, "Take all you want: God is watching the apples."

221. A CHILD'S PRAYER
Johnny had been misbehaving and was sent to his room. After a while he emerged and informed his mother that he had thought it over and then said a prayer.

His mother was pleased. "If you ask God to help you not misbehave," she said, "He will help you."

"Oh, I didn't ask Him to help me not misbehave," replied Johnny. "I asked Him to help you put up with me."

220. WANT TO BE MARRIED?
A wedding was planned immediately following the Sunday morning service. After the benediction the minister was supposed to call the couple to be married to the front of the church for the ceremony.

Unfortunately, his mind went blank, and he couldn't remember their names. So he asked for "those wanting to be married" to come to the front.

Nine single ladies, three of them widows; four widowers; and six single men came forward immediately.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: When was the first animal cloned?

ANSWER: Surprisingly, as far back as 1952, when scientists successfully cloned tadpoles. They were drawing on research that went back to 1938, when a German scientist developed a theory on how to clone vertebrates by nuclear transfer. (But did they develop into frogs?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: How far can a kangaroo jump?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

510. NO FACIAL HAIR
The Mona Lisa has no eyebrows. It was the fashion in Renaissance Florence to shave them off. (Raises a few eyebrows, does this revelation!)

511. ALWAYS TALKING
New Yorkers make around 36 million phone calls daily. (How many ‘busy’ signals do they get.)

512. PARDON?
Baseball player Connie Mack’s real name was Cornelius McGilicuddy. (Too long a handle to bat with!)

TIL DEATH DO US PART

116. SLOGANS!
A class professor was giving a lecture on company slogans and was asking his students if they were familiar with them.

"Joe," he asked, "which company has the slogan, 'come fly the friendly skies'?"

Joe answered the correct airline.

"Brenda, can you tell me which company has the slogan, "Don't leave home without it?"

Brenda answered the correct credit card company with no difficulty.

"Now John, Tell me which company bears the slogan, 'Just do it'?"

And John answered, "Mom...."

117. CIRCULATION
Soon after marriage, Terri's husband, Colby stopped wearing his wedding ring. Terri asked, "Why don't you ever wear your wedding band?"

Colby replied, "It cuts off my circulation."

Terri answered back, "It's supposed to!"

118. WOULD YOU AGREE?
A man and woman were having marriage problems, and decided to end their union after a very short time together. After a most brief attempt to reconcile, the couple went to court to finalize their break-up. The judge asked the husband, "What has brought you to this point, where you are not able to keep this marriage together?"

The husband said, "In the six weeks we've been together, we haven't been able to agree on one thing."

The wife said, "Seven weeks."

119. MARRIAGE IS A GAMBLE
Marriage is a gamble.
You start with a pair.
He shows a diamond.
She shows a heart.
Her father has a club.
His father has a spade.
There's usually a joker around somewhere,
but after a while he becomes a king and
she becomes a queen.
Then they end up with a full house.

WAXING LYRICAL

An amazing event in our family! My Mum, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her late 40's is still with us to celebrate her 90th birthday, becoming the longest lived lady ON our 300 year family tree! Incredible! Sadly, she died a few months later.

MY MUM IS 90!

Yes, today my Mum has turned ninety!
Threescore years, plus ten, plus twenty!
Where have all those years gone?
To us, a right royal paragon
Of virtue, befitting a hundred and fifty.

My Mum was born in Northern Ireland.
Green grass, grey sky, but her land.
Taken to Canada when oh so small,
Before arriving on New Zealand soil,
Where, on the farm, she leant a hand.

Experiencing the quake of 31 at school,
Where, of course, she was nobody’s fool.
Yes, dux of her year, you would expect no less,
With lots of brains, the Lord, my Mum did bless.
Getting it right, not the exception, but the rule.

Then up and away, to work on her bike,
Along the embankment, fast as you like.
In a lawyer’s office, my Mum did lurk,
Behind a typewriter, she did work.
Through a mountain of paper, Mum did hike.

One day in a shoe shop, she did meet her match,
A dastardly plan, my Dad, he did slyly hatch.
One wrong shoe in a box,
Put in by the wily old fox,
Return she did, where now, he made his catch.

Along came wedding bells and the knot was tied,
And then a son, bearing whom, she nearly died.
A time of blindness to go along with the pain,
But a bonny boy (if I may say so) she did gain!
To bring him up right, was what she always tried.

Eighteen months later, he was joined by a cute sister,
Judith Lorraine, a girl to dote on, not another mister.
Now there were two, with each other to fight,
Or rather, over which, a proud Mum, to skite.
Our Mum, she now had her son and her daughter.

I remember my Mum out on the tennis court,
A pretty picture in her dress, oh so short.
And then, of course, she charmed the Queen,
On the Britannia, where not many have been,
An experience, money could not have bought.

First MP’s wife, then as the gracious Mayoress,
Napier City, with her presence, she did bless.
Public life though, was not easy for her,
Home with family, she did rather prefer,
Always beautiful, in the way she did dress.

Mum and Dad, they travelled far and wide,
From Taj Mahal, to Sistine Chapel, inside.
They took us to Australia to visit a sewage farm,
A memorable pong that surely did me no harm.
While a cricket ball, round the MCG, it did glide.

Then came the shock diagnosis of multiple sclerosis,
But my Mum would not let it become a neurosis,
The Catholic charismatics prayed so hard,
That our God, played His trump card,
The disease never reaching its terrible prognosis.

Mum, you’ve been so brave and stoic in the challenges of life,
Always with a shrug and a smile, even when in great strife,
An example to me, and others, you have been,
In the good and the bad, and the in-between,
You have coped, persevered, always the good Mum and wife.

From Thompson to Kennedy Road, then up on the hill,
To Avon Terrace, several houses you and Dad did fill.
But in time, your husband, our Dad, did die,
Putting on a brave face, inside you did cry.
Then to get on with your life, it became your will.

Over the past 14 years I have watched you grow,
A new Lady Tait, have been privileged to know.
As you have made a new life on your own,
Into a new dimension you have grown.
A fresh dash of yeast to leaven your dough.

From Knightsbridge Village to Devonshire Place,
You’ve inspired others with your smile and grace.
A contentment in the face of difficulties you have found,
A model, to me, and to others, whom you are around.
In your later years, you have truly found your place.

Yes, as you have reached the milestone of 90 today,
The longest lived lady, in 300 years, you can now say,
All your family together, we’re so blessed by your life,
A faithful daughter, mother, grandmother and wife.
I thank and love you. ‘My Mum’, you will ever stay.
