WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

The major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".

Fifteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.

Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.

So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.

THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE

To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.

The relevant Scriptures can be accessed by clicking on the blue links.

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 29 ”‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. 31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. (Matthew 21:28-32)

Have you ever sung the song...

Create in me a clean heart, O God
And renew your Spirit within me.
Create in me a clean heart, O God
And renew your Spirit within me.

The sacrifices acceptable to you,
O Lord, are a broken spirit.
A broken heart, a contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

How contrite is your heart? But..... it is only a song, David...... I am worshipping as I sing it......you know what I mean.....

What do you mean?

It is so easy to let the religious words flow off our tongue and then do....... nothing!

So now, we can start to understand this parable of the kingdom.

For we are all guilty, at times if not all the time, of uttering words, that sound right for the situation, but which we do not convert into actions.

James 1:22

Our God is a God of action, not talk. We are not just to preach the word, but to be the living word. "I am not a preacher," I hear you say - with relief! But nor are we to be just hearers, but rather, doers of the word! No-one is excluded! Not me, not you.

Talk is cheap, action priceless!

Jesus goes on to rebuke the religious, through defining the true meaning of 'belief'. Belief here is a verb, a doing word, a word, a state of being, that requires action! Not only of the mind, but also of the emotions, and most importantly, of the will.

Who will be obedient to the Lord?

Jesus tells us. Those who need Him most. The most sinful who repent. For they know where they have been and don't want to go back there! They truly understand the meaning of 'turning their life around'.

Many who are reading this will have been blessed to have been brought up in Christian homes where church is a lifestyle inculcated in you from birth. It is easy to sing the songs and say the words, for they come naturally. We can even make a commitment, say the sinners prayer and live a good life, but not truly know and live for Jesus. Have been there and done that! I am talking from experience!

For me it took a rejection of this 'churchian' lifestyle and a period of 10+ years living in the world, firstly with success, then monumental failure, to bring me to true repentance.

We are all sinners,

Romans3:23

The only problem is, many of us brought up to live a good, or maybe, religious, life, do not truly understand our need to repent, as much as the thief or the prostitute does.

Being good will not get us into the kingdom.

Luke 15:7

Another warning to the Pharisees of that day and this!

Matthew 5:19-20

We will all perish unless we genuinely repent (turn around and walk away from) our sins.

Luke 13:2-3

It took me 42 years to truly understand and act upon this in my life! A slow learner!

How about you?

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

The Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-14, Mark 2:23-3:6, Luke 6:1-11)
Jesus criticized for picking grain on the Sabbath.

Haven’t you read in the law that on the Sabbath day the priests in the Temple break the Sabbath but are not considered guilty? However I tell you that someone is here who is greater than the temple! 7If you’d known the meaning of this Scripture, ‘I want mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you wouldn’t have condemned an innocent man. For the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

And again for healing a man with a shriveled hand in the synagogue.

“Suppose you have a sheep and it falls into a hole in the ground on the Sabbath. Don’t you grab hold of it and pull it out?” “Don’t you think a human being is worth much more than a sheep? So yes, you are allowed to do good on the Sabbath.”
“Hold out your hand.”

Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-7:29, Luke 6:17-49)
The primary ‘life teachings’ of Jesus.

The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12, Luke 6:20-23)

“Blessed are those who recognize they are spiritually poor, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are those who are kind, for they will own the whole world.
Blessed are those whose greatest desire is to do what is right, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are those who have pure hearts, for they will see God.
Blessed are those who work to bring peace, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those persecuted for what is right, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and accuse you of all kind of evil things because of me.
Be glad, be really glad, for you will receive a great reward in heaven—for they persecuted the prophets who came before you in just the same way.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1042. Religion resists change while revelation requires it!

1043. Revelation formalised soon becomes religion institutionalised.

1044. God's kingdom breeds revelation, religion, rules.

1045. Religion is man's adaptation of God's revelation.

1046. When religion fails you, turn to God.

1047. So often the church attempts to compete with God's kingdom rather than promoting it.

1048. God's vision is our mission.

1049. Religion is the eager repository of yesterday's revelation.

1050. Revelation is eternal truth meeting today's circumstances.

1051. Revelation is from God's heart, religion, a product of the heart of man.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

152. AN ARM AND A LEG!
Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, so God asked Adam, "What's wrong?" Adam said he didn't have anyone to talk to. So God said he was going to give him a companion and it would be a woman.

He said this person would cook for you and wash your clothes, she will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear you children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will not nag you, and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give you love and compassion whenever needed.

Adam asked God, "What would a woman like this cost?"
God said, "An arm and a leg."
Adam said "What can I get for just a rib?"

The rest is history!

151. 10 REASONS NOT TO WASH
In one church, the pastor, apparently fed up with all the excuses given over the years as to why people don't go to church, included "Ten Reasons Why I Never Wash" in the Sunday bulletin:
1. I was forced to as a child.
2. People who wash are hypocrites - they think they are cleaner than everybody else.
3. There are so many different kinds of soap, I can't decide which one is best.
4. I used to wash, but I got bored and stopped.
5. I wash only on special occasions, like Christmas and Easter.
6. None of my friends wash.
7. I'll start washing when I get older and dirtier.
8. I can't spare the time.
9. The bathroom is never warm enough in winter or cool enough in summer.
10. People who make soap are only after your money.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is a Welsh rabbit?

ANSWER: Welsh rabbit (also called Welsh rarebit) isn’t an animal at all. It's melted cheese on toast or crackers. It was called this so peasants could imagine themselves eating real rabbit -- or at least make fun of the fact that they couldn't afford it. The name originated in an era when only the Welsh nobility could hunt rabbits. The poor peasants had to melt cheese on toast and simply call it ‘rabbit’. (Unable to acquire the habit of eating rabbit.)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where did the term ‘private eye’ originate?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

582. FROM BIG TO BIGGEST
The Earth weighs around 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons (5,940 billion billion metric tons) yet the sun is 330,330 times again larger than the earth! (No wonder it has so much energy!)

583. FROM THE RIDICULOUS TO THE SUBLIME
The South American sloth (a mammal that lives in trees) moves so slowly that green algae can grow undisturbed on its fur, while a mole can dig a tunnel 300 feet long in just one night! (From ‘slothful sloth’ to ‘eager beaver’.)

584. COMFORTING - TO MEN
In Natoma, Kansas, it is illegal to throw knives at a man wearing a striped suit. (But not at a woman though!)A WORD PUZZLE FOR YOU

GREAT GROANERS

175. WHAT!
Abe came home one day and found his wife Esther in tears. "Darling, what's the matter?" "Oh Abe," cried Esther, "Doctor Cohen says I have tuberculosis."

"What! A big healthy woman like you has tuberculosis?

Ridiculous," said Abe, "I'll call Doctor Cohen and get this sorted out right now." So Abe called his doctor. "Doctor, Esther says you told her she has tuberculosis." The doctor said something to Abe and with that, Abe began laughing.

"So what's so funny about my having such a dreadful disease?" asked Esther. "Esther, Doctor Cohen didn't say you that you have 'tuberculosis', he said you have 'too big a tuchas'!

176. WHERE TO LOOK
A famous treasure hunter went out one day with all of his diving gear to search for a treasure box that was supposed to be on a sunken ship. He swam around for a while and looked where it was supposed to be, but didn't find anything.

Later, when he was walking out of the water, really close to the shore, he tripped on something. He started to dig around it and it was the treasure chest he was looking for!

All this goes to prove that booty is only shin deep.

177. TONGUE TWISTER
I wish I had a small truck so I could take advantage of a contract hauling opportunity I saw mentioned the other day. Seems a water-garden company wants a load of frogs
delivered, but they have to be delivered in a special bog-like container that will fit in a pickup truck's bed. They'll pay in food. For each load delivered, the company will provide one enormous home-baked casserole with a crust of middle-eastern flat bread. Mmmmmm! That's right: a pita pie per pickup pack of puddle peepers.

178. THE BLONDE
Did you hear about the two females who were watching a blonde walk by?

The first one said, "I wonder whether she's a natural blonde or a bleached blonde."

Her friend said, "She's a suicide blonde."

The other said, "Suicide blonde? What's that?"

The friend said, "Dyed by her own hand!"

Just have a laugh at life here.....

Adoption saves lives

USA (MNN) — It’s one thing to hear inspiring stories of how people overcame opposition; it’s a different thing entirely to meet them. All around us are people with amazing back-stories we can’t even begin to imagine without talking to them.

We spoke with Amy Scott, an adoption specialist with Bethany Christian Services about her story of opposition and how a generous family changed everything for her.

“When I was born, my birth parents left me in a garbage bag in a trash compactor in an apartment complex, with the intention that I would no longer be living once the trash compactor crushed me.”

Clearly Scott’s story didn’t end in tragedy. At just the right time, she let out a shriek. A man in the area heard her and pulled her out, and took her to the hospital. Within an hour of her birth, Scott was pronounced healthy.

A life touched by adoption

After a short five months, Scott was adopted by her foster family who introduced her to Jesus.

“My life was blessed tremendously through the family that I was adopted by, through the opportunities made available to me,” Scott says.

Of these opportunities, Scott is especially thankful for her education. She pursued a graduate counseling degree.

While she was completing her education, Scott became familiar with various ministries and careers she could pursue with her degree.

She says the Lord led her to Bethany, and for the past seven years, she can see why He did. Being an adoption specialist combines her compassion for people with her ability to relate to these families embarking upon the journey of adoption.

Scott also began a summer camp program for adopted children. At the camp, kids can meet and relate with other adopted children. Scott says they provide practical advice to the children such as how to answer hard questions in a way that protects the information they want to keep private about their backgrounds.

We all can help

One thing Scott believes in strongly is that even though we’re not all meant to adopt, we are all meant to get involved in helping these children in need.

She often wonders what it would be like for the people she impacts on a daily basis if she hadn’t been rescued.

What if she remained in foster care, switching from family to family instead of ever finding a forever home? What about other children? How can your involvement change the course of a child’s life for the better?

There are many ways to impact the lives of orphans.

“Every life is valuable, and you never know what impact you’re going to be having,” Scott says.

WAXING LYRICAL

When all else fails, we have our family! Or we should. When our family fails, they are still our family! Or they should be. Our family is our greatest source of both pleasure and frustration. They know us best. We cannot fool them. So here is a little about our family. Since the poem was written Andrew and Catriona have produced our baby Eva, our first grandchild. But 20,000km away in Scotland! Thankyou Lord for emails!

LIFE’S A LAWNMOWER, MATE! (Part 1)

Uptown, I heard a new saying - life’s a lawnmower mate?
Like us, in a range of models, whose features we debate.
Mechanical and manual, rotary and reel,
Push types and ride-ons, all made of steel.
Being sold with a promise, yes, so sparkling and new,
But we know they mean work, before we’re all through!
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

Like a new baby, right out of the box,
Full of promise, when kept off the rocks
Of trouble, that can soon blunt our blades,
Just as we look set, to mow many glades.
To mow through life, needs that something special,
If we are to succeed, to develop our full potential.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

Take my life’s lawnmower for instance,
A racy model, but will it last the distance?
For the challenge of a newly grown field, I will always look,
Something different, preferably new, but never by the book.
Though sometimes to discover, I’ve bitten off more than I can chew!
To learn the art of patience, to pace myself, that is what I must do.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

My wife Kathy, is a model so different,
With a long stroke bore, reliable, diligent.
For she was born like her mother, a nurse she’d always be,
Until she revved her sweet engine, ending up marrying me!
The years that followed, oft times were filled with pain,
Now she’s finally fulfilled, having gone nursing again.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

Our eldest son Andrew was not a lawnmower fan,
Mowing lawns and gardening do not make the man!
So he revved up his mower for a journey over the sea,
To the land of Scotland, so his own man he could be.
Once settled, he was motivated to make a good living,
So tuning his motor, he went landscape gardening!
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

As the business built up, his lawnmower faster would run,
Until the day he realised, two mowers were better than one.
So he found a gorgeous, sleek new model, Catriona by name,
Another nurse, could be worse, their directions both the same,
For their mutual desire is to start a new church,
To harvest people, not leave them in the lurch.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

A DAVID MUSING

Recent times have seen extreme weather events in many parts of the world. But none more so than Cyclone Pam which has just devastated the Pacific jewel of Vanuatu, and is now heading our way, albeit in a much weakened state. We are expecting it reach us in the next few hours (Sunday night, Monday morning),

I have visited Vanuatu several times, and we once had a shop there, run for us by locals. In fact it is the last overseas country I ministered in. Don't think I caused the storm, as that was some years ago! Almost time to travel again!

Interestingly, Vanuatu would likely be the most 'Christianised' country in the world. Yet tragically, it has still been hit by one of the most intense cyclones ever recorded.

I cannot explain why this might be, for God 'works in mysterious ways' - to us that is.

Being a Christian does not prevent tragedy from hitting our lives, but 'walking with Jesus' will help us through our difficult times.

Thank you Jesus for walking with me.

PS: The expected rain will be a drought breaker for us, so 'it's an ill (very strong!) wind that bears no good'!

Please pray and support the people of Vanuatu as you are able.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
