MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT

KINGDOM PRESENT - THE KINGDOM PARABLES

THE PARABLE OF THE NET

"“Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked. “Yes,” they replied. He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”" (Matthew 13:47-52)

The parable of the net is similar to that of the tares and the wheat, talking about sorting out true from false believers, at the end of the age. For there is a mixture of both true and false Christians in the church. Matthew Henry confirms this in his Bible commentary.

(3.) This net gathers of every kind, as large dragnets do. In the visible church there is a deal of trash and rubbish, dirt and weeds and vermin, as well as fish. (4.) There is a time coming when this net will be full, and drawn to the shore; a set time when the gospel shall have fulfilled that for which it was sent, and we are sure it shall not return void, Is. 55:10, 11. The net is now filling; sometimes it fills faster than at other times, but still it fills, and will be drawn to shore, when the mystery of God shall be finished. (5.) When the net is full and drawn to the shore, there shall be a separation between the good and bad that were gathered in it. Hypocrites and true Christians shall then be parted; the good shall be gathered into vessels, as valuable, and therefore to be carefully kept, but the bad shall be cast away, as vile and unprofitable; and miserable is the condition of those who are cast away in that day.
Henry, Matthew, Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible, (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers) 1997.

We do need to be realistic, and concerned, about the fact that some of those who attend church year in and year out do not have a personal relationship with Jesus. Attending church, reading the Bible, being an expert in theology, while being good things in themselves, do not make one a true follower of Jesus. Jesus is not into religious form(ality) but rather, into relationship. A personal relationship with Him.

It is so sad how many professing Christians are either unaware they need to, or do not choose to, develop their own individual relationship with Jesus, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Being a good person does not qualify you for a ticket to heaven!

A vibrant personal relationship, whether in the world or with Jesus, is always a work in progress, developing from one level to another. As the King James Version says, 'from glory to glory'.

18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:7)

As a result of that relationship a teacher of the Word must bring out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old. We must, through our relationship with Jesus, receive new and personal revelation to pass on to others. Of course, this revelation must be in line with Scripture, but God wants to reveal more of Himself to each succeeding generation. As our relationship with Jesus develops, so He reveals more of Himself to us.

It is said that those who have been married for a long time get to look like each other. (Bad news for my wife Kathy, but good news for me!) Same with Jesus. I am sure I don't look like Him physically, but inside....?

While we are still to bring the 'old treasures' of revelation received through the generations, we must also discover and present 'new treasures' to accompany the old.

The old is good, but the new, inspirational.

There was a man of my fathers generation, Jack, who worked on the wharves, unloading ships, here in Napier. He was uneducated, yet He had great knowledge and revelation of the Word. He had at one time, a weekly teaching night, which men would flock to. No formal theological training, but a deep relationship with Jesus. The hungry came to feast upon the revelatory Word.

Such is the revelation for today, of God's kingdom being built upon the earth. The Lord's Prayer has been recited, often in rote fashion, billions of times over the past 2000 years, yet it is only now that God is choosing to reveal the meaning of the phrase;

10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

New treasure, a new understanding of living the kingdom life now, today, this minute, is being revealed to seeking, dedicated followers of Jesus around the world.

His kingdom will come on earth as it is in heaven.

Thank you Lord.

FROM THE WORD

The Glory of the New Covenant

"Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts! Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:7-18)

Prayer

"“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray: ”‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." (Matthew 6:5-14)

Future Glory

"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will." (Romans 8:18-27)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1068. Religion insidiously enters the church through repetition.

1069. Repetition is religion's close ally.

1070. As people we are inherently religious, for we enjoy feeling comfortable - even in our discomfort!

1071. Religion is revelation become tradition.

1072. Tradition is religion's friend, but the deadly enemy of revelation.

1073. Tradition moulds revelation into religion.

1074. Revelation revs 'Revs'!

1075. While knowledge is gained at a theological seminary, revelation comes from the father heart of God.

1215. The understanding that God's kingdom is available now is the greatest motivator of all for keen Christians.

1216. There's no need to wait. Seek God's kingdom now!

1308. Religion is based upon dependence, the kingdom, interdependence.

1309. Religion looks inwards, the kingdom, upwards and outwards.

1310. The kingdom is not centered round teaching and preaching, but rather, living out teaching and preaching.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

171. GEE THANKS!
While working on a message the pastor heard a knock at his office door. "Come in," he invited.

A contrite-looking man in threadbare clothes came in, pulling a large pig on a rope.. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" asked the man with his hat in his hand. Wordlessly, the pastor indicated the chair and the man sat down in it gingerly. The pig proceeded to sniff around the office. With one eye on the animal and one on the man, the pastor folded his hands on his desk and leaned forward, curious to hear the fellow's story. "What can I do for you?"

"My family is hungry," started the man. "So I stole this pig. But I feel that I have sinned. Would you please take it?"

"Certainly not," said the minister.

"Then what should I do with it?" asked the man.

"Give it back to the man you stole it from, of course!" the pastor explained.

"I offered it to him, but he refused to take it. Now what should I do?"

"In that case," the minister said, "It would be all right for you to keep it and feed your family."

That seemed to settle things as far as the man was concerned. "Thank you for your help, sir." With a lighter step, he walked out of the office, leading the pig on the rope behind him.

Later that afternoon when the minister returned home, he said to his wife as he walked in, "Have I got a story to tell you."

"I have something to tell you first," she exclaimed. "Someone has stolen your prize pig!"

170. VESTED INTEREST
A rather well-dressed man called on the minister and told him a distressing story of poverty and misery in the neighborhood.

"This poor widow," he said, "with four starving children to feed, is sick in bed with no money for the doctor, and besides that, she owes $350 rent for three months and is about to be evicted. I'm out trying to help raise the rent money. I wondered if you can help?"
"I certainly can," said the minister. "If you can give your time to this cause, so can I. By the way, who are you?"

"I'm the landlord," said the man.

169. A VALUABLE ANIMAL
A farmer named Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside except for a pet dog he doted on. The dog finally died and Muldoon went to the parish priest, saying "Father, my dog is dead. Could you possibly be saying a mass for the poor creature?"

Father Patrick told the farmer "No, we can't have services for an animal in the church, but I'll tell you what, there's a new Protestant church down the road apiece, and they'll take in just about anybody. Maybe they'll do something for the animal."

Muldoon said "I'll go right now. By the way, do you think $50,000 is enough to donate for the service?" Father Patrick replied "Why, didn't you tell me the dog was Catholic."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Why do some animals have eyes that glow in
the dark?

ANSWER: Taking a flashlight outside at night to look for your cat, you
might have been greeted with the eerie glow of two eyes that appear to
be floating free of the cat. What makes cat eyes, and those of some other
animals, glow in the dark? Many nocturnal animals (those that hunt at
night) have a mirror like layer called the ‘tapetum’ behind the cells of the
retina. This reflective surface helps the animal to gather more light so that
it can clearly see, even in very low levels of illumination. Animals that
have this ability include rabbits, deer, cats, racoons, wolves, and even
bullfrogs. Animals' eyes glow different colours, too, depending on the type
of animal and the pigment in the animal's photoreceptors. Some shine
red or green, while others are yellow, gold or white. (Glow worms too.)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is the underlying meaning of the number
'7' in the Bible?

245. SPLOSH
A ball of glass will bounce higher than a ball of rubber. Again, a ball of solid steel will bounce higher than one made entirely of glass. (The bounce in life comes from unexpected sources.)

LIFE LAUGHS

144. GETTING FRIENDLY
One caller to our answering service gave me his name, number and message and then said, "You know my name. What's yours?"

"4136," I replied, since we were allowed only to give our operator numbers.

Sounding disappointed, he said, "May I call you by your first digit, or would that be too personal?"

145. PLAYING HOUSE
Two little children, a boy and a girl, walked hand-in-hand to a neighbor's house. The little girl stood on her tiptoes and just able to reach the doorbell. Then, an elderly lady greeted them at the front door.

"Good morning, children," she said. "What can I do for you?"

"We're playing house," the little girl answered. "This is my husband and I'm his wife. Can we come in?" Thoroughly enchanted by the scene, the elderly lady replied, "By all means, do come in."

Once inside, she offered the children lemonade and cookies, which they graciously accepted. When a second tall glass of lemonade was offered, the little girl politely declined. "No thank you," she said. "We have to go now. My husband just wet his pants."

146. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
On duty as a customer-service rep for a car-rental company, I took a call from a driver who needed a tow. He was stranded on a busy highway, but he didn't know the make of the car he was driving. I asked again for a more detailed description beyond "a nice blue four-door."

Afer a long pause, the driver replied, "My car is the one on fire."

147. OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT PROPERTY
The day I immigrated to the United States, I was given an alien ID card that featured a cute photo of me at 15. Years later, when I went to the courthouse to become a
citizen, a clerk confiscated my card.

"What will you do with it?" my wife asked.

"We burn it," was the reply.

"Could you please cut the photo off and let us keep it?" asked my wife.

"Certainly not!" said the clerk. "This card is official government property. As such it cannot be mutilated before it is destroyed."

BIBLE TRIVIA (Old Testament Family Life)

IT WAS CONSIDERED A PRIVILEGE AND A DUTY FOR A JEWISH MOTHER TO BREASTFEED HER BABY

But where a woman was unable to do so, a wet nurse was employed. The wet nurse, generally unrelated, fed the baby with her own breast milk. Pharaoh's daughter's first reaction was to get a Hebrew woman to feed Moses.

The conflict with Ugands's “Lord’s Resistance Army”

The Sentinel Group's DVD, An Unconventional War, is the story of God’s response to unqualified obedience and targeted desperate prayer. This amazing story demonstrates in real terms, the power of prayer and the partnership between church and state to resolve a decades-long conflict. There are powerful lessons to be learned from these saints in Uganda that can help all of us as we plead and pray and seek God for the transformation of our own lives and our communities.

TARGETED PRAYER

The conflict with the “Lord’s Resistance Army” had gone on for nearly twenty years. It seemed that the Ugandan military could not make any headway against this rebel army. Throughout the 1990’s, Uganda’s military grew increasingly frustrated by its inability to subdue the L. R. A. Given their superior fire power, and training, it did not make sense how they could not overcome the rebels. Mysterious things would happen. Many times, Kony and his forces would be surrounded, but would mysteriously escape. The spirits would routinely inform Kony of government raids. Many times, it seemed that Kony already knew when the government forces would be coming and even how many government troops there were. He could even tell the exact route that the U. P. D. F would be using to attack them. It was becoming very evident that this was not a conventional war. There were strong forces of evil at work. Many former rebels confirmed the L. R. A.’s strong reliance upon witchcraft. Although Kony would frequent many ritual sites throughout the northern bush, he had his greatest spiritual ties in sites in the Aware and Kilak hills. Every six months he would return to these locations to renew his spiritual powers.

As conditions continued to worsen, church leaders in Uganda began to realize that the forces of darkness were firmly in control in the North. They were facing an enemy that would not be defeated by military means. Church leaders and intercessors began to understand the history of idolatry and the link between idolatry and the suffering of the land. The whole body of Christ in Uganda was called to a month of fasting and prayer to prepare for Operation Gideon, a spiritual war on idolatry and witchcraft in the North. This would mean getting to the root of these spiritual forces. Teams of select believers would be dispatched to each of the L. R. A. ritual sites to do spiritual warfare and destroy these sites in the Name of the Lord. These were very dangerous places, and the risks were considerable. Many were not willing to go, realizing the dangers. Because of the importance of the mission, and the associated dangers, it was decided that the military would provide armored escorts for the intercessors.

Soldiers in AwereThe team's first stop was Aware Hill, a prime source of Kony’s coveted sacred water. The accompanying soldiers were well aware of the danger of this place and were reluctant to go. They told of one of the commanders who had already died there. In March of 2003, Operation Gideon began on the Aware Hill. Rev. Julius Oyet described the scene. “We all held hands and shouted, ‘The Lord is God, The Lord is God,’ and covenanted this place back to the Lord by a symbol of prayer.” “After that we scooped out the water and drained it completely.” This demonstration of God’s power brought the escort detachment to their knees in submission to the Lord.

The next target was an active altar containing human remains. The body was unearthed, burned and the site cleansed in prayer.

A third site was in the Kilak Hills and could only be reached by helicopter. The Kilak Hills have very strong spirit ties to the Acholi people. The forces of darkness were so strong in this place that leaves drifting over the water there would instantly wither. Once again the intercessors prayed and broke the power of darkness in that place. And once again the accompanying troops were so overwhelmed with God’s presence that they were baptized in that very water. The powers of darkness were broken through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As a result of this strategic and targeted intercession, Kony’s links to the powers of darkness were greatly disturbed. At one point he finally told his commanders that the spirits had left him. This was the beginning of the turning point in the war with the L. R. A. After years of seeming invincibility, Kony’s magic had finally worn off. This was a powerful demonstration of the necessity of clear and targeted prayer against the roots of evil in our communities.

If we are to see transformation come to our communities, we must recognize, as the Ugandan church did, that many of the difficulties and conflicts in our communities have spiritual roots. We must also learn how to identify these roots of darkness and wage spiritual warfare in Jesus' Name. Prayer must be Biblical and targeted in order to destroy the foundations of darkness in our communities. In community after community, where believers have applied these principles with humility, unity and diligence, God has given powerful transformational breakthroughs.

A REVELATION OF... THE POWER OF THREE IN GOD AND THE CHURCH

In walking further with Jesus, I increasingly appreciate that this particular revelation of 'threes in God' has been hugely important in developing my understanding of God and how He works both in the church and in our lives.

It matters not whether you are a 'oneness', 'twoness', or 'trinitarian' believer. The concept still applies. For we're all very good at putting God in a box, limited to the walls of our theology and understanding. But, one day, we will know all the truth of the great mystery of God.

In the meantime, if you can grasp this simple, yet profound concept, I'm sure it will open up new realms of understanding for you too about God and His plans for His people in these end days.

It certainly developed my faith tremendously, being able to grasp more of God's mighty plan for me. And for you too!

WAXING LYRICAL

Life is a battle when we are walking in God's will for our life, for the enemy doesn't like it. But we must never forget that we have the victory - even though it sometimes may not seem like it!

WHEN BAD THINGS ARE GOOD

There is a man, I do know,
Who in God, desires to grow,
When something bad in life, does come along,
He's not now sad, for it makes him strong.

When satan tries to destroy his day,
He can now tell him to go away,
Has learned that, when doing God's will,
Satan will run you, through his mill.

He will accuse you of being blind,
And put evil thoughts in your mind,
A mighty battle now does take place,
Before you go on to win the race.

While satan's antics seem so real,
They're an illusion designed to steal
God's vision and purpose from our life,
Continually forcing us into strife.

The time to worry I have found,
Is when the devil is not around.
For when we proceed on our own way,
He takes time off to go and play.
He'll try his tricks on another one,
As our God, he tries to outgun.

So bad things are good, when we're in God's design.
Defeated satan - you have no power, us to decline!

A DAVID MUSING

I am writing this well in advance, as when you receive this, I will be (briefly) in Vanuatu. 'Where is that?' I can hear you say!

I know many of you don't know where New Zealand is, (to the south-east of Australia) but it is likely that few will know the location of Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides).

Vanuatu is a small group of islands in the Pacific, 3 hours and 10 minutes away from New Zealand by jet. On the map you will see it two centimetres to the right of the top right hand corner of Australia!

We are looking at opening a Seekers shop here, through contacts we have made amongst the very beautiful Christian people we have met, who have come to New Zealand to help with the maintenance and picking of our horticultural crops. They are great customers too!

We are in the midst of opening 3 new shops over the next 2 months, so the visit will be brief. Hopefully though, still with time enough for a little snorkeling amongst the coral, looking at the amazing tropical fish that abound there.

God's creation is wonderful!

Fill you in when I get back.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
