RELIGIOUS FORM OR FREEDOM THROUGH JESUS?

Are these the 2 alternatives? (Tongue in cheek! LOL!)

zzzzzzzz.....zzzzzzzz.....zzzzzz..... Wake me up when the service ends please. Or.....

Halleluuuuuja!!! Praise the LOOORRRRDDD!..... Noise! Earplugs! Loud music! Confusion! Lack of order! Let me out of here!

What is freedom in Jesus? And what does it mean for the church?

Under the New Covenant, we are freed from the bonds of the Law of the Old Covenant (Testament) which no one had or has ever been able to 100% adhere to anyway.

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. (Hebrews 9:15)

Yes, Jesus came to set us free! To become a member of His family! Hallelujah!

34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:34-6)

And again.....

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

Sadly, too many Christians have either been taught, or have assumed, that this freedom means that they can do as they like behaviorally, without fear of consequences.

This is not the case. For one important thing every believer needs to learn is that all God's promises are conditional. So it is with 'freedom'.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. (Colossians 1:21-3a)

And again.....

13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. (Galatians 4:13)

While we are no longer slaves to sin, we are to transfer our allegiance to become slaves to God. It is our response to the freedom given that results in eternal life. Don't denounce David, believe the Word.....

22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22)

What implications does this have for the church?

1. SAYING THE (unbiblical!) SINNERS PRAYER IS NOT ENOUGH: True salvation is reflected in discipleship, in becoming one with Jesus. Converts need to be supported and helped to grow in the ways of God, mentored in how to exercise their new found freedom.

2. THE CHURCH MUST NOT REVERT TO OLD OR NEW LAW: The easiest thing in the world to do is to become 'religious'! What is religion? Religion is a method, a set of laws, designed to bring man to God. People are naturally religious. For we all like routine, doing things the way that worked yesterday. It is easier. We no longer have to think and make decisions. I get up, have a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast and go to work. We establish a pattern that works for us, without us having to think about it. Such is the case in virtually every church, whether it be 'zzzzz' or 'holy roller'! (COL -cry out loud!) We do what worked yesterday, today. God turned up that time, (perhaps 100's of years ago, or maybe only last week), so we do it the same way again. This becomes the formal or informal 'law' of our group. Freedom has, once again, become religion.

The primary reason revivals end is that the revivalists work out how the Holy Spirit is doing it, and so, end up trying to do it for Him - and He leaves. The pattern continues, but the Presence, the substance, has gone. Another denomination is formed. So the Holy Spirit now looks for another group of people who are willing to listen and truly follow Him. How sad, but how true!

3. HEARING GOD'S VOICE: Exercising freedom is not easy! For true freedom comes through slavery, through the submission of our, now free life, (free of earthly desires and encumbrances), to the will of the Father.

It is only in this way that satan will be overcome and the kingdom of God established upon the earth.....

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:10-11)

Amen.

FROM THE WORD

Freedom in Christ

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be. Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves! You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Life by the Spirit

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Doing Good to All

Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5 for each one should carry his own load. Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Not Circumcision but a New Creation

See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand! Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised obey the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God. Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen." (Galatians 5:1-6:18)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

SUBMISSION AND OBEDIENCE

930. Heaven is reached through obedience to God's will, not simply the recitation of a 'Sinners Prayer'.

931. Godly obedience is the present outworking of belief and faith.

932. I cannot truly say I'm a believer if I'm not prepared to follow the path of the one in whom I believe.

933. Freewill is a choice, obedience the choice of freewill.

934. Doing what God wants us to do when it differs from what we want to do is our true test of obedience.

935. "I will obey You", is the ultimate form of worship.

936. The path of obedience takes a different route to that of our natural understanding.

937. To do what we don't understand, because God said it, is the ultimate test of obedience.

938. It may be easier to die as a martyr, than to die to one's self!

939. As I die, so God grows in me. There is only room for one of us!

940. In God, submission is a sign of success, not one of failure.

CRANWELLS CARTOONS

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

413. LATERAL THINKING
Question: "Who is the most unhappy in the Parable of the Prodigal Son?"

Answer: "The fatted calf."

412. THE FUNERAL
A new Pastor in a small Oklahoma town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first services.

The following Sunday the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the Pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the church was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice said.

Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church.

Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead church," all the people eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look.

In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

411. OBSERVANT
Three people were trying to get into heaven. Peter asked the first, "Who's there?" "It's me, Albert Jones," the voice replied. St. Peter let him in.

Then St. Peter asked the second one the second same question, "Who's there?" "It's me, Charlie Jones." And St. Peter let him in.

Finally he turns to the third, asking the same question, "Who's there?" "It is I, Verla Chapman," answered the third.

"Oh, great," muttered St. Peter. "Another one of those English teachers."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is the sleeping sickness?

ANSWER: Sleeping sickness, or encephalitis lethargica, was a strange disease that appeared in Europe suddenly in 1915. By 1918, the disease, which took many forms, had spread throughout the world. In some cases, victims fell into a coma and never woke up. Others died from days and days of NOT being able to sleep at all. The epidemic, which is estimated to have affected five million people, vanished mysteriously in 1927. Survivors didn't fare well. The long-term effects of the sleeping sickness, which had developed into a form of Parkinson's disease, had turned many patients into motionless ‘statues’. In March 1969, neurologist Oliver Sacks began to prescribe L-dopa, a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease, to sleeping sickness patients. The effect was extraordinary. Many began to ‘wake up’ and were suddenly, after decades of not moving, able to walk and talk and think. Some patients believed they were still in the 1920s! Sadly though, many patients on L-dopa began to suffer from involuntary muscle movements, bizarre motions and notions, and other serious symptoms. (Maybe we all would if we woke up 40 years in the future!)

PETS RULE

32. VIOLIN PRACTICE
Little Harold was practising the violin in the living room while his father was trying to read in the den.

The family dog was lying in the den, and as the screeching sounds of little Harold's violin reached his ears, he began to howl loudly.

The father listened to the dog and the violin as long as he could. Then he jumped up, slammed his paper to the floor and yelled above the noise, "For pity's sake, can't you play something the dog doesn't know?"

33. BE YOURSELF
President Calvin Coolidge once invited friends from his hometown to dine at the White House. Worried about their table manners, the guests decided to do everything that Coolidge did. This strategy succeeded, until coffee was served. The president poured his coffee into the saucer. The guests did the same. Coolidge added sugar and cream. His guests did, too. Then Coolidge bent over and put his saucer on the floor for the cat.

34. TEACHER'S PET
On a special Teachers' Day, a kindergarten teacher was receiving gifts from her pupils. The florist's son handed her a gift. She shook it, held it overhead, and said, "I bet I know what it is, some flowers."

"That's right" the boy said, "but how did you know?" "Oh, just a wild guess," she said.
The next pupil was the candy store owner's daughter. The teacher held her gift overhead, shook it and said, "I bet I can guess what it is, a box of candy." "That's right, but how did you know?" asked the girl. "Oh, just a wild guess," the teacher said.

The next gift was from the son of the liquor store owner. The teacher held it overhead, but it was leaking. She touched a drop of the leakage with her finger and touched it to her tongue. "Is it wine?" she asked. "No" the boy replied, obviously delighted that he was the first student to at least temporarily defy the teacher's apparent insight.

The teacher repeated the process, touching another drop of the leakage to her tongue. "Is it champagne?" she asked. "No," the clearly delighted boy answered. Once again the teacher tasted the leakage and finally ,"I give up, what is it?"

The boy enthusiastically replied, "It's a puppy!"

BIBLE TRIVIA (Strange and Amazing Facts)

Brazil: Handing the keys of the city to Jesus

In Brazil more than one hundred mayors have presented the keys of their city to Jesus. This was reported last month by Dutch prayer leader and author Pieter Bos. In this edition of Joel News a few more of the stories he collected.

Cornélio Procópio is a town of 80,000 inhabitants in Parana State. Pastor Jonathan Santos works with Visitaçao de Deus, a ministry that intentionally equipped the local churches to engage with their city in prayer, evangelism and helping people in need. When the churches became more united, continuous prayer was focused on the mayor and other visible authority figures. At some point a goodwill dinner was organised by the churches with these persons as guests of honour. A few days afterwards, a group of pastors visited the mayor. As it was shortly before carnival, the president of the Council of Churches asked the mayor: "When you give the key of the city to us, even as a mere ceremony, then you cannot also give the key to Rei Momo." This was food for thought. As it turned out, the mayor, in the midst of a large gathering with many officials, with real understanding, handed the key of the city to the pastors. This was in January 2010. Since that time a considerable improvement in the city has become evident: church growth, political and economic stability, and a decrease of crime.

Campinas is a city of one million inhabitants in Sao Paulo State. In 2009 a seminar on healing and deliverance was organized in the city. Pastor Kid Marinho invited the mayor to attend and challenged him to give the key of the city to Jesus. Not only did the mayor respond, he also gave two buildings to the church in a poor section of the city, as a base from which the church could provide counsel and care to homeless or fatherless children and other destitutes. And another building for weekly food distribution among 120 poor and jobless in that vicinity. Other churches joined in the project by providing food and preaching of the gospel. Many more openings followed, and the Evangelical church is now recognized as a transforming force in the city.

WAXING LYRICAL

This poem was 2 years in the writing! The inspiration came, half was written, then I got busy on other things! In the last day or two I have had some spare time, so thought to finish it. (Actually I have had more spare time during the two years but never quite got 'a round tuit'!) I hope the result is worth waiting for!

MR BUMBLE (Part 2)

So our 'brmm-brmm bee' plummeted to the ground,
Fortunately for him, landing on a very soft mound
Of leaves gently fallen from a nearby tree,
Disaster averted, I was so thankful to see.

"Why are you down here Mr Bumble", I asked, surprised,
When suddenly it dawned - my mistake, I now realised.
You shouldn't have taken to heart what I said,
Was only theoretical, straight from my head.

Of course you can fly, everyone knows that fact,
Indeed we would rather like to get in on the act!
For God made you in a very special way,
To humble us humans, each and every day.

For when we see how well you can fly,
We realise, no matter how hard we try,
There's knowledge money can't buy,
That's of our God, up there in the sky.

"But I believed you," Mr Bumble sadly said,
"Look at me now, I could easily be dead!
Thank God for the leaves of the tree,
Now I know, He is looking after me"

"Forgive me please," I cried out loud,
Feeling foolish for being so proud,
So full of worldly knowledge is my brain,
To consider others feelings, too much strain.

"Mr Bumble, you are a scientific miracle,
My understanding, insufficiently empirical,
For it is obvious you can soar far above,
Which I simply can't, for money or love!"

"I feel a lot better now," said Mr Bumble,
"To see you on your knees, so humble,
Maybe I can fly again without a fumble,
I'll give it a good go - LET'S NOW RUMBLE!

Wings flapping,
Slowly at first,
Then revving,
Give it a burst!

Now into the air again, Mr Bumble flew,
"Yes, I can still fly!" that he now knew,
Up, up, into the blue,
Buzz, buzz, it's true!

There are two lessons here, in life to be learned,
Neither pull another down, nor be the one spurned,
For word's are so powerful you see,
When taken and used by our enemy.

We're to encourage one another to fly high,
Sometimes it's difficult, but let's give it a try.
Yes, twill give a whole new outlook on life,
As well as keeping Mr Bumble, out of strife!

For the 'Fruit of the Spirit' we are to develop,
Yes, love, peace and joy, our life will envelop.
So when we meet the Mr Bumbles of our daily walk,
We can help them fly higher, through our godly talk.

('Artistic License' has been taken in describing the nesting habits of the bumble bee. Unlike honey bees, they are solitary creatures! But that would spoil a good story!)

A DAVID MUSING

One of the best things about the Rugby World Cup (next to the All Blacks winning!) is that it fell just 5 weeks before our 3 yearly, central government elections! As the whole country became 'a stadium of 4 million people' over the 6+ weeks of the World Cup, the politicians wisely decided to take second place! So now we have an election with a highly truncated, effectively 4 week, campaigning period. Now America, isn't that a great idea?

Of course, everyone knows that politicians promise much more than they are able to deliver, even if they do try - which many don't. For the problems of the world are unable to be solved by human effort, given that they are dealing with a fallen world, a world steeped in the selfishness of sin.

While humanists believe that mankind is capable of solving its problems by human endeavour, and even quote statistics to say the world is becoming a better place, it is patently obvious to most of us who have to live in it, that it isn't.

The Bible tells us that it will surely not improve until satan is defeated. That the primary battleground is not physical, but spiritual. So how is satan overcome? the Bible tells us that too!

11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11)

Are you willing to sacrifice all to be a 'sold out for Jesus' overcomer? For these are the ones who see the promise of the Lord's Prayer fulfilled.....

10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
