WHAT PLACE JESUS?

During the week, I attended a gathering of English Christians, where I greatly enjoyed meeting the people and finding out about their lives. It was very similar to being at home in New Zealand.

Upon reflection, I realised though, that although I had found out about the people themselves, their lives, families and interests, I had found out almost nothing about their relationship with Jesus. As I thought further, I realised that this is very much the same throughout the Western world. We talk about ourselves, our work, our interests and if we get really spiritual, about our church, but we rarely talk about our personal relationship with Jesus. And I am no different!

But when you get a gathering of Christians in Africa, they talk about Jesus, and what He is doing in their lives. For they experience Him daily, indeed, most have to rely upon Him for their 'daily bread'.

Something worth pondering upon, isn't it? What place does Jesus truly have in our life?

FROM THE WORD

THE MIGHTY LORD REIGNS
Psalms of intimacy, encouragement, healing and comfort.

Psalms updated from the King James Version by David Tait.

PSALM 118

Composed for the Temple Liturgy.

A hymn of thanksgiving for the Lord's everlasting mercy, illustrated by his deliverance of the Israelites from their enemies.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Let Israel now say, "His love endures forever." Let the house of Aaron now say, "His love endures forever." Let those who fear the LORD say, "His love endures forever." I called upon the LORD in my distress: the LORD answered me, and set me free. The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid: what can man do to me? The LORD takes my side, with those who help me. I will look in triumph upon my enemies. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. They surrounded me. Yes, they surrounded me. But in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. They surrounded me like bees. They died out as quickly as fiery thorns, for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. I was pushed violently and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous. The right hand of the LORD has done mighty things! The right hand of the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the LORD has done mighty things! I will not die, but live, and proclaim what the LORD has done. The LORD has chastened me severely, but has not given me over to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness. I will enter and praise the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise you, for you have heard me, and become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone. This is the LORD’S doing. It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made - we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, O LORD! O LORD, grant us success. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. God is the LORD. He has made his light shine upon us. Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise you. You are my God. I will exalt you. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.

PSALM 121

A Song of ascents. (Annual religious pilgrimages to Jerusalem)

A pilgrimage song, sung as the people made their way to Jerusalem for one of the three, annual religious festivals. It recognizes that God helps those who seek him.

I will lift up my eyes unto the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip. He that keeps you will not slumber. Indeed, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil. He shall preserve you from harm. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in, both now and forevermore.

PSALM 133

A Song of ascents. (Annual religious pilgrimages to Jerusalem) Of David.

As the people marched together towards Jerusalem, they sung this song of the blessings of unity in the Lord.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! It is like the precious oil poured upon the head, running down on the beard, even Aaron’s beard; that went down the collar of his garments. Running down as the dew of Hermon, as the dew that fell on Mount Zion. For there the LORD commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

HEAVENLY TRUTHS GOD HAS SHOWN ME

739. - 809. God has shown me that...

... without Him, we will never fulfil our potential.

... the more I get into Him, the more He gets into me.

... the more time I spend with Him, the more time He has to make changes in me.

... His love never fails, but other's love may.

... the reward for loving others is found in Heaven, rather than on earth.

... life is to be our investment in eternity.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered: ”‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:25-37)

A BRITISH EXPERIENCE

* In Harods, Britain's exclusive department store, (But owned by an Egyptian!) I saw some exclusive Italian truffles being sold for £4,600 ($US10,000) per kilogramme! Simply in the name of enhancing the flavour of food. At Fortmun and Mason the price was £5,000!The comparison with the huge needs of Africa and elsewhere is so obvious it hardly needs stating!

* The weather here in London has been hugely unseasonal, although of course, still a lot cooler than in Africa. However, for early winter in Britain, it is a heatwave! 12+ degrees centigrade today. More normal for this time of year would be near zero! We are still hoping for a 'white Christmas' in Scotland, but the weather will need to change radically for this to happen. Certainly makes one think about global warming!

* London is a city where things work! All the things we in the West take for granted. You can drink the water out of the tap (although it tastes horrible), flush toilets, rely on continuous electricity, drive without potholes, etc., etc. May we be truly grateful for what we have!

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: The strongest muscle in our body is found in our leg, arm, hand or head?

ANSWER: In the Head! Yes, the strongest, and also most troublesome, muscle in the body is the tongue! (James 3:1-12) (Words fail me!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What do selenologists study? Butterflies, traffic density, the moon, vibrations or indigenous cultures?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

421. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOLLARS
Warner Communications paid $28 million for the copyright to the song ‘Happy Birthday’. (Now have to find a way to collect royalties every time we sing it!)

422. CUMBERSOME CURRENCY
Until the nineteenth century, solid blocks of tea were used as money in Siberia. (Could literally ‘drink your money away’.)

423. VERY SIMILAR
The two chapters of 2 Kings 19 and Isaiah 37 in the Bible are almost identical. (Can learn 2 memory verses for the effort of one!)

BIBLE QUESTION - THE PARABLES

In the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, in Matthew 20:1-16, a landowner goes into the city one morning to hire workers for his vineyard. Later in the day he goes twice more to hire additional workers. At the end of the day he gives all the laborers the same pay. The workers who worked all day grumbled when they got only the same pay as those who worked just a few hours.

Which is a third lesson of this parable?

a. Workers should always be paid fairly.
b. God will not grant salvation to those who wait until late in life to turn away from sin.
c. Those who have served God long and hard should not be jealous of those who find faith late in life.
d. Those who have served God long and hard can expect a greater reward than those who find faith late in life.

PET(ty) HUMOUR!

ADMITTING DEFEAT
A man absolutely hated his wife's cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway.

The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat!

He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there.

Hours later the man calls home to his wife: "Susan, is the cat there?"

"Yes", the wife answers, "why do you ask?"

Frustrated, the man answered, "Put that no good thing on the phone, I'm lost and need directions.

A COMMENT FROM AFRICA

Dear servant of the most high God brother David

Warm Christian greetings from the brotherhood of believers who are with me here in Kenya.

I am much humbled to have this opportunity to pray and believe that you had a wonderful trip back home after a very very successful and much blessed trip here in Africa.

My heart and those of the brethren were very much warmed and built by the wonderful spiritual food the Lord cooked for you and you graciously dished to the Lord’s people here.

People here are still rehearsing the wonderful message from the mouth of the LORD and they are daily hungering for more than ever before.

Your coming over was according to the lord’s own timing and the Lord knew that at such a time as that one the Lord would talk to His people about the TRAGEDIES that are about to befell the unbelieving and the proud, the wicked and the mockers.

The food that was fed our hearts has never been sayed by any servant of God because not many servants of God talk about sin, hell or the impending judgement that is about to come. Most Ministers of the Gospel usually preach about prosperity and they don’t warn the church that the wrath of God is about to fall on the unbelieving world.

We were so much thrilled by the way you boldly said the oracles of God and how fearlessly you stood against the devil to lift Christ up here.

The word of God is not much regarded these days people are making their own ways of surviving and they only want to hear “sweet words of how they will prosper and how their territories will be enlarged.

The word of the Lord has been very much compromised and deluted and nobody is caring .
We thank the lord that He has chosen you to be His vessel to proclaim the End time message.

It was indeed inspiring to hear the man of God standing tall and defending our Lord and the Biblical truth.

We know that the righteous are on being faded away from the earth but the bible says that those who will persevere to the end will be saved.

Only those who have washed their clothes with the blood of the Lamb will stand on the Holy mountain of the Lord and these will be called friends of God on the lord’s day.
Your wonderful message on the gifts of the Holy Spirit was so much wonderful and it is my desire that the Lord may grant me the grace to use His gifts so that I may bring many to His garner. .

Kosher is a Yiddish word that derives from the Hebrew 'kashrut'. It actually covers more than dietary laws, but is truly a notion of what is 'proper' for many things in the Law.

UNDERLYING BIBLICAL SPIRITUAL MEANINGS

Tips to Help You Better Understand the Spiritual Meaning of Your Bible

Many words in the Bible have implied spiritual meanings as well as literal ones. For instance, numbers in Hebrew have an underlying meaning as well as a numeric value. e.g. the number 7 speaks of completion or perfection. Other words have a spiritual significance as well as a literal meaning. e.g. when scripture talks of a ‘lamb’ it is usually a type of Jesus, the ‘Lamb of God’ (John 1:29)

I trust that this list will help you better understand some of the amazing spiritual truths hidden in the pages of God’s Word, the Bible. Do be careful however, to apply these types and pictures sensibly. The relevance of their application must be considered in the context in which the words are used in the passage being studied and in the Bible as a whole.

Colours

BLUE------Holy Spirit (Sky and Sea)

RED-------The Son (Blood), Holy Spirit (Fire)

YELLOW---The Father (Gold)

WHITE----Jesus (Purity)

Metals

BRASS-------Judgement, Strength against sin

GOLD--------Deity (God), Faith

SILVER------Redemption, Atonement

The Three Gifts

GOLD: Celestial good - love - kingship

FRANKINCENSE: Spiritual good - faith - divinity

MYRRH: Natural good - use of love and faith, trials and testings - sacrifice

WAXING LYRICAL

When writing my book, ‘Eagles Fly High!’ I would go sometimes go up and stay at some
friends’ holiday home about half an hour north of where we live. This poem relates one
of my experiences there. Ironically, I eventually left the words I wrote out of the book
–saved them for another time. I thought the poem though, was worth leaving in.

THE SHEEP AND THE GOAT! (1 of 2)

Before starting this story, I had better expand
On what I am doing here, in Bowentown land.
I came to write more of this book you see,
Without interruption, in peace and tranquillity.

My day started well, out of bed not too late,
In shorts and T-shirt, went down to the gate,
From there to go running, but what did I find,
Goodness gracious, my energy was left behind!

I plodded down the road at a snail’s pace,
Praying I wouldn’t meet a familiar face.
For vanity comes quickly, out there on the road,
Jogging an easy way, your friends so to goad.

There was a reason for my slowness you see,
For on the previous night, I had had no tea.
No meals indeed, on the day before that!
My body for me, would not go out to bat.

For I am fasting, seeking the Lord you know,
Praying for his inspiration to help me grow.
But in case you think I’m a super spiritual nut,
I’m also expecting now, a shrinking of the gut!

Next, sitting at my computer, uninspired,
Felt really down to it, suddenly so tired.
I was to write about ‘The Sheep and the Goats’ you see,
Expecting God’s revelation - that should have inspired me!

I looked at the computer, viewed the writing on the screen,
‘The Blood and the Lamb’, left from last night, it had been.
Then the computer, it asked me to save,
The answer no, was the one I gave!

In no time at all, I realised my mistake,
No corrective action, could I now make!
Gone forever, fifteen hundred words,
A day’s inspiration, lost to the birds.

(To be continued next week.)

A DAVID MUSING

As you receive this, I will be on my way to Aberdeen to be with my son Andrew, his lovely wife Catriona, and our 3 grandchildren, Eva, Nathan and Charis. Also to meet Kathy again, for the attraction of the grandchildren was greater than me, and she went up to Aberdeen a week ago, leaving me alone in London!

For me, it will be the first time of meeting our 19 month old twins. This is the reality when family moves to the other side of the world. For Scotland is 20,000km away from New Zealand. Exactly as far as you can get. The same distance either way round the world!

It will be wonderful to be with our family here this Christmas, although of course, we will greatly miss our other 3 sons, still at home in New Zealand. May our Christmas be white! This would be a new experience for us, for a New Zealand Christmas is in the summer!

Until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

Today's 'Word Puzzle' Answer: RUINED

TODAY'S 'DO YOU KNOW?' ANSWER: c. Those who have served God long and hard should not be jealous of those who find faith late in life. In verses 13-14, the landowner says, "Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you." In the same way, whatever good things we receive from God will be more than fair. We have no right to pass judgment on His generosity toward others.
